Book excerpt: During the peak of the COVID 19 pandemic, there seemed to be turmoil and chaos everywhere I looked. We were surrounded by illness, death, loss of jobs, business closures, political debacles, and just for fun, a couple of hurricanes and tornadoes. Life was quite chaotic. I began writing words of encouragement for myself, and soon began sharing them on my blog page. Each morning, I would settle in at my huge kitchen table or out on my back deck, and I prayed, “Give me a word, Lord.” Every day, God gave me a topical word, and from that, a devotional flowed from my keyboard. The words were truly God inspired. My sister and my husband challenged me to continue writing for 365 days, and I accepted the challenge. I thought I would run out of words, but oh no, not this wordy girl! God designed this old girl, and He gave me the gift of gab. Through daily Bible reading, research, and writing of these devotionals, I have grown closer in my walk with Christ, and my good, good God calmed the chaos in my heart day after day. I pray that you too will find solace in these words. May you find calm in the chaos of life.

With more than 75 everyday meditations, Mindfulness for PMS, Hangovers, and Other Real-World Situations offers targeted suggestions for inner freedom, even if you can't stop scrolling your Instagram feed. Book excerpt: “He may have an MBA, but he’s got no common sense.” Assessments like that by a boss can stop a career dead in its tracks. Unfortunately, many believe that common sense is a trait you are either born with or you are not. This book dispels that myth. Through the pages of Common Sense: Get It, Use It, and Teach It in the Workplace readers will learn not only what common sense is, but how to acquire it and use it to enhance their careers, increase their confidence, and take better advantage of business opportunities. Common Sense explores the use—and non-use—of common sense in the workplace and the world around us. It shows how you can become a person of great wisdom and good judgment by simply learning about all the ways people stumble in the thought process. Author Ken Tanner, a seasoned manager, consultant, and former regional vice president for two major U.S. restaurant chains, shows readers how to make better decisions, how to spot and avoid fallacious thinking, how to better assess ambiguous situations, and how to become a mature thinker with a knack for making the right move at just the right time. Best of all, Common Sense shows how to teach this trait to others, especially subordinates and co-workers who can and will do nonsensical things unless you help them learn to reason through their decisions and actions quickly and confidently. The payoff? Your staff will make you look good, greasing the way for greater responsibility and opportunity. This book: Takes you through an understanding of the term "common sense"—what it means and what it doesn’t mean. Shows how fallacies create barriers to using common sense. Provides dozens of examples of the application (as well as rejection) of common sense in the business world and elsewhere. Shows how to teach common sense to others.

Book excerpt: A tragicomic story of bad dates, bad news, bad performances, and one girl's determination to find the funny in high school from the author of Denton Little's Deathdate. Winnie Friedman has been waiting for the world to catch on to what she already knows: she's hilarious. It might be a long wait, though. After bombing a stand-up set at her own bat mitzvah, Winnie has kept her jokes to herself. Well, to herself and her dad, a former comedian and her inspiration. Then, on the second day of tenth grade, the funniest guy in school actually laughs at a comment she makes in the lunch line and asks her to join the improv troupe. Maybe he's even . . . flirting? Just when Winnie's ready to say yes to comedy again, her father reveals that he's been diagnosed with ALS. That is . . . not funny. Her dad's still making jokes, though, which feels like a good thing. And Winnie's prepared to be his straight man if that's what he wants. But is it what he needs? Caught up in a spiral of epically bad dates, bad news, and bad performances, Winnie's struggling to see the humor in it all. But finding a way to laugh is exactly what will see her through. **A Junior Library Guild Selection**

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In For Kids of All Ages, members of the National Society of Film Critics celebrate the wonder of childhood in cinema. In this volume, original essays commissioned especially for this collection stand alongside classic reviews from prominent film critics like Jay Carr and Roger Ebert. Each of the ten sections in this collection takes on a particular aspect of children’s cinema, from animated features to adaptations of beloved novels. The films discussed here range from the early 1890s to the present. The contributors draw on personal connections that make their insights more trenchant and compelling. The essays and reviews in For Kids of All Ages are not just a list of recommendations—though plenty are included—but an illuminating, often personal study of children’s movies, children in movies, and the childish wonder that is the essence of film. Contributors include John Anderson, Sheila Benson, Jay Carr, Justin Chang, Godfrey Cheshire, Morris Dickstein, Roger Ebert, David Fear, Robert Horton, J. R. Jones, Peter Keough, Andy Klein, Nathan Lee, Emanuel Levy, Gerald Peary, Mary Pols, Peter Rainer, Carrie Rickey, Jonathan Rosenbaum, Michael Sragow, David Sterritt, Charles Taylor, Peter Travers, Kenneth Turan, James Verniere, Michael Wilmington, and Stephanie Zacharek.
