Book excerpt: When a car crashes into a garage on an ordinary street, the attending officer is shocked to look inside the damaged building and discover a woman imprisoned within. As the remains of several other victims are found in the attached house, police believe they have finally identified the Red River Killer—a man who has been abducting women for nearly twenty years and taunting the police with notes about his crimes. But now the main suspect, John Blythe, is on the run. As the manhunt for Blythe intensifies, Detective Inspector Will Turner finds himself fighting to stay involved in the investigation. The Red River murders hold a personal significance to him and he must be the one to find the killer, although he’s determined to keep this from his fellow officers at all costs.

Book excerpt: "ROAR is for everyone who is thinking about where they are in life-and those who want more out of life. From author Michael Clinton, former president and publishing director of Hearst Magazines, ROAR helps both those considering retirement and those who have no wish to retire get on with fulfilling their dreams-before it's too late. We are living in a time when everyone is constantly reassessing what is next for them. In the mid-career group, people who have spent years working in a business are now seeing their industry changing dramatically and are facing the question: "What does that mean for me in the next twenty years?" At the same time, the post-career group is also going through massive change. Many in this group are still not prepared financially, logistically, or emotionally to make the decisions necessary to face the next phase of their lives. While they may be thinking about retiring, they don't necessarily want to do nothing. ROAR will help both groups think about what is really important to them, and how to plan and take meaningful action so that the second half of their lives can be happy and productive. The book offers a unique and dynamic 4-part process called ROAR: Reimagine yourself, Own who you are, Act on what's next, and Reassess your relationships. This is the method Michael uses himself to pursue a purposeful life-and now he shares his technique and approach so you can expand your own life too. Prescriptive and inspiring, with personal anecdotes from his life as well as from others he interviewed for the book, ROAR is highly accessible, entertaining, and transformative"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deborah Ellis, activist and award-winning author of The Breadwinner interviews young people involved in the criminal justice system and lets them tell their own stories. Jamar found refuge in a gang after leaving an abusive home where his mother stole from him. Fred was arrested for assault with a weapon, public intoxication and attacking his mother while on drugs. Jeremy first went to court at age fourteen (“Court gives you the feeling that you can never make up for what you did, that you’re just bad forever”) but now wears a Native Rights hat to remind him of his strong Métis heritage. Kate, charged with petty theft and assault, finally found a counselor who treated her like a person for the first time. Many readers will recognize themselves, or someone they know, somewhere in these stories. Being lucky or unlucky after making a mistake. The encounter with a mean cop or a good one. Couch-surfing, or being shunted from one foster home to another. The kids in this book represent a range of socioeconomic backgrounds, genders, sexual orientations and ethnicities. Every story is different, but there are common threads — loss of parenting, dislocation, poverty, truancy, addiction, discrimination. The book also includes the points of view of family members as well as “voices of experience” — adults looking back at their own experiences as young offenders. Most of all, this book leaves readers asking the most pressing questions of all. Does it make sense to put kids in jail? Can’t we do better? Have we forgotten that we were once teens ourselves, feeling powerless to change our lives, confused about who we were and what we wanted, and quick to make a move without a thought for the consequences? Book excerpt: When her husband died suddenly on New Year's Eve, Carol was left to raise their six boys, ages 11 months to 16 years. That night she made a promise to God: if He provided for her and the boys the way He promised in His Word, she would go anywhere He sent her and tell others of His care. But if He didn't, she would burn her Bible on the front lawn and tell any onlooker that it was just a book of pretty words and pious phrases that wasn't true when you needed it to be. God not only provided but had a big surprise: He sent her across the globe to share her story. Carol was then given an unexpected career in television and radio as host and producer, and later, a new husband. Faith for the Journey tells firsthand the life-changing things that can happen when you trust God with all your heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy chronicles the French invasion of Russia and its impact on Tsarist Russia, through the stories of five families—the Bezukhovs, the Bolkonskys, the Rostovs, the Kuragins, and the Drubetskoys. The Russian Messenger published portions of the manuscript, titled The Year 1805, as a serial from 1865 to 1867. Dissatisfied with the published version, Tolstoy extensively rewrote the novel between 1866 and 1869. After his wife, Sophia Tolstaya, copied as many as seven ‘separate’ manuscripts, the author considered it for publication, again. Tolstoy finally changed the name to War and Peace; it is believed that he borrowed the title from Pierre-Joseph Proudhon’s 1861 book, La Guerre et la Paix. War and Peace has been translated into several languages and is regarded as Tolstoy’s finest literary achievement.
