Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though her life was largely circumscribed by domesticity and poverty both in England and in Canada, Catharine Parr Traill’s interests, experiences, and contacts were broad and various. Her contribution to our knowledge of nineteenth-century Canadian life, from a literary, historical, and scientific perspective, was significant. Chosen from her nearly 500 extant letters, the 136 presented here vividly reflect typical aspects of social and family life, attachments to the Old World, health and medical conditions, travel, religious faith and practice, the stresses of settlement in Upper Canada in the 1830s, and the dispersal of families with the opening up of the Canadian and American West. Spanning seventy years, the letters are presented in three sections, each prefaced by an introductory essay. The first, ‘1830–1859: “The changes and chances of a settler’s life,”’ traces Traill’s story from her emergence as one of the literary Strickland sisters in England, through the difficult, poverty-stricken years of settlement and family raising in Canada, to her husband’s death. The second, ‘1860–1884: “The poor country mouse,”’ reveals her quiet life at Westove (her cottage at Lakefield), her devotion to family and friends, and the time she spent writing botanical essays and seeking a publisher for them. A trip to Ottawa in 1884 awakened her to a recognition of the literary stature she had earned. The third section, ‘1885–1899: “The sight of green things is life to me,”’ begins with the publication of her Studies of Plant Life in Canada and sheds light on the public recognition she received, her continuing literary productivity, and the strengthening of her role as matriarch of the Strickland family in Canada. It closes with her death on 29 August 1899. Together with the introductory essays, Traill’s correspondence offers an intimate and revealing portrait of a courageous, caring, and remarkable woman—mother, pioneer, writer, and botanist.

Book excerpt: Born in the midst of the Great Depression in Neenah, Wisconsin, V.W. Thomack has lived an adventurous life. In this memoir, he recalls boyhood memories, including: • Each spring, his dad would have his kids line up for his magical elixir: sulfur and molasses to purify their blood. • Knickers and knee socks were popular attire for young boys. The elastic in the knickers would wear out, as would the elastic in the knee socks, so both would fall down. The author would pull the socks and knickers up and hold them in place with a rubber band. • When the collars of his shirts wore out, his mother would take them off and reverse them, so the shirts were like new again. The author also recalls events throughout his life, including falling in love, getting married, and then the tragic loss of his wife to Alzheimer’s disease—as well as the sudden loss of great friends. Along the way, he incorporates history, humor, trivia, and, shocking punch lines. It’s all part of celebrating his home runs and lamenting the times he could not get his bat off his shoulder to deliver hits.

You’ll enjoy the familiar stories of traditions in Dixie along the way, and no doubt pick up a new idea or two of ways to celebrate Southern culture, nourish your loved ones, and make new memories. Book excerpt: From the wickedly hilarious pen of Southern humorist Celia Rivenbark comes a collection of essays that brings to mind Dave Barry (in high heels) or Jeff Foxworthy (in a prom dress). Step into the wacky world of "womanless wedding" fund-raisers, in which Bubbas wear boas. Meet two sisters who fight rural boredom by washing Budweiser cans and cutting them into pieces to make clothing. Learn why the word snow sends any right-thinking Southerner careening to the Food Lion for extra loaves of bread and little else. Humor columnist and slightly crazed belle-by-birth Celia Rivenbark tackles these and other lard-laden subjects in Bless Your Heart, Tramp, a hilarious look at Southern---and just plain human---foibles, up-close and personal. So pour yourself a glass of sweet tea and curl up on the pie-azza with Bless Your Heart, Tramp.

My friend, Elizabeth Weatherby, fondly known as "Libby" to me, has written a book that will change you. Lord, How Can I Bless You? is the amazing love story between Libby and God. Libby is one of the greatest lovers of God I know. As you read, you'll witness their shared love and how it expands to meet the needs of others. You'll also read of heartbreak, loss, grief, recovery, healing, hope and the miracles of a simple child-like faith. But what you'll witness most is the glory, greatness and wonderment of God. Lord, How Can I Bless You? is Libby's life story. She doesn't just tell her story; she invites you into it. She's written prayers with each chapter that allow you the opportunity to speak to, hear from and experience the same God she knows and loves. Get ready to laugh, smile and cry. Get ready to be challenged, inspired and convicted. Get ready to fall in love with God and those around you. Get ready to bless God. If you don't want that kind of reading experience, then don't pick up this book. But, if you do, then you're in for the read of your life and more. You're in for a live-change.

Book excerpt: For many people, remaining optimistic and feeling positive about themselves and their lives is a constant battle—especially when circumstances are difficult and life is hard. For others, negativity is something that only sneaks up from time to time, yet still wreaks havoc in their hearts. Regardless of the root causes, once pessimistic thoughts permeate our minds, our feelings and emotions begin to control us instead of us controlling them. Eventually it doesn’t seem possible to stay positive, happy, and full of joy, and negative thought patterns shake our faith, causing us to sink emotionally, mentally, and spiritually over time. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Despite what storms roll in, hearts anchored in God don’t sink. When we change the way we think, we can change the way we feel and live, even if our circumstances remain the same. Intentionally embracing the opportunity to experience a transformed heart and a renewed mind opens the door for a changed life, because a positive mind will always lead to a more positive life. In Unsinkable Faith, author and Proverbs 31 Ministries speaker Tracie Miles offers hope for women who struggle with negativity. Each chapter explores Tracie’s and other women’s personal stories, showing how they rose above their circumstances by transforming and renewing their minds. Unsinkable Faith is a breath of fresh air for anyone longing for a heart full of joy, an unbreakable smile, and a new, more optimistic perspective on life. This book will equip you to: Replace pessimism with positive thinking by becoming the captain of your thoughts; Learn how true joy and happiness are based on choice, not circumstances; Overcome unhealthy habits of negative thinking by intentionally implementing three easy mind-renewing steps; Stop feeling hopeless and pitiful, and start feeling hope-filled and powerful instead; and Discover that when you change the way you think, you change the way feel, and in turn you can change your life completely.
