Book excerpt: Scripture reveals a God who meets us where we are, not where we pretend to be. No More Faking Fine is your invitation to get honest with God through the life-giving language of lament. If you've ever been given empty clichés during challenging times, you know how painful it is to be misunderstood by well-meaning people. When life hurts, we often feel pressure--from others and ourselves--to keep it together, suck it up, or pray it away. But Scripture reveals a God who lovingly invites us to give honest voice to our emotions when life hits hard. For most of her life, Esther Fleece Allen believed she could bypass the painful emotions of her broken past by shutting them down altogether. She was known as an achiever and an overcomer on the fast track to success. But in silencing her pain, she robbed herself of the opportunity to be healed. Maybe you've done the same. Esther's journey into healing began when she discovered that God has given us a real-world way to deal with raw emotions and an alternative to the coping mechanisms that end up causing more pain. It's called lament--the gut-level, honest prayer that God never ignores, never silences, and never wastes. No More Faking Fine is your permission to lament, taking you on a journey down the unexpected pathway to true intimacy with God. Drawing from careful biblical study and hard-won insight, Esther reveals how to use God's own language to come closer to him as he leads us through our pain to the light on the other side, teaching you that: We are robbing ourselves of a divine mystery and a divine intimacy when we pretend to have it all together God does not expect us to be perfect; instead, he meets us where we are There is hope beyond your heartache, disappointment, and grief Like Esther, you'll soon find that when one person stops faking fine, it gives everyone else permission to do the same.

Book excerpt: A rhyming, read-aloud book with warm illustrations conveys a comforting, faith-filled message from a Black father and mother to their children who see visual representations of their faith, but question what it means when they don't see their skin color, their physical features, or their gender portrayed. "What about the angels, will they stop and stare, when they see that I may not have their same color hair?" asks the girl. In soothing verse, the father assures his children that everyone looks like Jesus and the angels by the things they do. As the family walks through their neighborhood, the father points out the beauty in God's creations, from flowers, all unique and different, to all the children in their community "each with skin a different shade." He reminds his children that pictures of faith such as angels were drawn by someone and encourages his children to draw their own pictures so angels look like all of us.

Book excerpt: A Bible Study for Women. You are a Daughter of the King. You are a Child of God. You should be overflowing with confidence, but if you're anything like the average woman, insecurity may still be a struggle at times. Why do we struggle when we have such a secure identity? Because we are forgetful. We take our eyes off God and forget what He says about who we are. We instead focus on how we feel about ourselves and let doubt creep in. We worry about how others perceive us, and live a life seeking to gain their approval. It's time to refocus our minds onto what God says about us, replacing our areas of insecurity with His Truth. There is no reason for you to be insecure. Ever. God's desire is for you personally to discover what it means to be truly confident as His beloved child, enjoying the rich blessings of your true identity which are found in Jesus. You are meant to live in confidence and victory as "A Daughter of the King." Over the course of 8 lessons you will build your foundation of confidence based on what God says about you. God says you are loved, you are forgiven, you belong, you matter, you are beautiful, and you have purpose! You are strong! You are royalty! "A Daughter of the King" is a Bible study workbook that is simply written, and meant to be enjoyed as if having a comfortable conversation, girlfriend-to-girlfriend. Through the study of Scripture, personal stories, insightful reflections, and thought-provoking questions, your identity as a child of God will take on a fresh meaning, bringing with it a bold new confidence. It's time to begin living with confidence.

Book excerpt: “Beautifully evokes scenes of two girls adrift in the . . . bohemian beach culture . . . a breathtaking, fiercely feminine take on American magical realism.” —Interview Magazine Set in Long Beach, California, beginning in the 1970s, The Salt God’s Daughter follows Ruthie and her older sister Dolly as they struggle for survival in a place governed by an enchanted ocean and exotic folklore. Guided by a mother ruled by magical, elaborately-told stories of the full moons, which she draws from The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the two girls are often homeless, often on their own, fiercely protective of each other, and unaware of how far they have drifted from traditional society as they carve a real life from their imagined stories. Imbued with a traditional Scottish folktale and hints of Jewish mysticism, The Salt God’s Daughter examines the tremulous bonds between sisters and the enduring power of maternal love—a magical tale that presents three generations of extraordinary women who fight to transcend a world that is often hostile to those who are different. “Indeed, Ruby has written a complicated, multi-layered work that shifts shapes to bridge the relationship between tragedy and redemption.” --The Huffington Post “Three generations of indelibly original women wrestle with the confines of their lives against a shimmering backdrop of magic, folklore, and deep-buried secrets . . . To say I loved this book is an understatement.” --Caroline Leavitt, New York Times bestselling author “The selkie myth lies at the heart of Ruby’s second novel . . . This is a bewitching tale of lives entangled in lushly layered fables of the moon and sea.” --Kirkus Reviews

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simple ride to borrow a pickup from my family changed all the lives of our family in one short second. We were hit by a drunk driver and taken to the hospital. I had such extensive injuries that it was determined I should be flown by emergency helicopter to a hospital where a team of orthopedic surgeons would be waiting for me. Before I left, I was given a blessing and promised the Lord wanted to heal me quickly. Those words gave me strength. Once arriving at the hospital, I wanted to block it all out because it was too much for me to handle. I would talk to my loved ones coherently, but I didn't want to talk to anyone else. I closed my eyes and wanted to wake up after it was all over. A nurse finally got through to me that I'd die if I didn't cooperate with them, and I joined the fight. It took all my effort to simply stay alive. I found strength in Bible stories, my faith, and blessings. After many surgeries, I went from intense pain to discomfort. Then I had to face a depression that went from gentle tears and sobs to deep moans and groans. I could feel my baby's arms around my neck and heard him call for me, and I couldn't move. I saw my children and my husband and tears flowed nonstop. Finally, I was able to move again, and the depression faded almost instantly. I started moving my arms, and I progressed to be able to ring the nurse's buzzer. In the next few days, I sat up for the first time, stood up, and started taking steps with support. It wasn't an easy process. My muscles had completely atrophied. My head swirled, like being on a tilt-a-whirl. With the help of a physical therapist, I was walking with minimal support quickly. However, next I needed to put weight on my arms to get out of bed. Muscles were attached to scar tissue, and I'd get terrible cramps. It was like starting all over again, but with blessings and my physical therapist and orthopedic surgeon, who was never happy until he made me whole, I survived. I was told I'd be in the hospital six months to a year. I left short of two and a half months. I was very weak, but I was going home.

Her days were spent doing chores and helping with the children. It was a hard life, and food was often scarce. They did what had to be done in order to survive day by day. This was how Millie felt life was for everyone, because that was all she knew. Millie's life changed as she got older, and her father noticed her growing into a beautiful young woman. At night, she would roll herself inside her floor mat to protect herself from her father's attempts to have his way with her. She felt the only way she could survive was to run away from home. It was difficult for her to leave her mother and siblings, because she loved them and knew she was the one who did most of the hard work for the family. Several times her attempts to escape ended with her father and mother finding her and bringing her back. It was by the hand of God that she was finally able to escape for good. God guided Millie through good times and bad times. The Lord always provided what and whom she needed as Millie found her way on her own. This was when Millie truly realized it was God who was taking care of her, because God was always a step ahead of her. Millie went through difficult times, but God always created something good from a bad situation.
