His request to use a public restroom during a stop sparked a brief heated exchange between he and the white bus driver. The driver summoned the police, whereby 27 yr. old Woodard was forcibly removed from the bus, arrested, beaten and permanently blinded by Police Chief, Lynwood Shull in the small town of Batesburg, South Carolina.What followed next is an incredible story of angst, courage and motivation beginning with President Harry S. Truman and Judge J. Waites Waring, who presided over Woodard's case. In an attempt to right the wrongs of Woodard's injustice and systemic racism, Truman formed the Council for Civil Rights which ultimately led to the dismantling of Jim Crow laws beginning with the desegregation of the Armed Forces and the Railroad car. The Civil Rights Movement quickly gained momentum and later the case Brown v. Board of Education challenged school segregation. Entertainers Nat King Cole, Pearl Bailey, Cab Calloway and Boxer Joe Louis are also a part of this amazing story. Sgt. Woodard becomes a griot and reveals his truth in simplistic form for the child reader to grasp an unforgiving, yet necessary part of history, while sparing them the details of the tragedy. He shares the history of inequality in America and how other concerned citizens around world rallied in support to bring about positive change. The use of Sgt. Simmons wrote: "Today's generation of Marines serve in a fully integrated Corps where blacks constitute almost one-fifth of our strength. Black officers, noncommissioned officers, and privates are omnipresent, their service so normal a part of Marine life that it escapes special notice. The fact that this was not always so and that as little as 34 years ago (in 1941) there were no black Marines deserves explanation." This statement holds true for this edition of Blacks in the Marine Corps, which has already gone through several previous reprintings. What has occurred since the first edition of Blacks in the Marine Corps has been considerable scholarship and additional writing on the subject that deserve mention to a new generation of readers, both in and outside the Corps. First and foremost is Morris J. MacGregor, Jr.'s Integration of the Armed Forces 1940-1965 (Washington, D.C.: U.S. Army Center of Military History, 1981) that documents the Armed Forces efforts as part of the Defense Studies Series. The volume is an excellent history of a social topic often difficult for Service historical offices to deal with.
