This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Show off your outrageous disposable income with this amazing, ridiculous, opulent, luxurious manuscript. This book is perfect for: An item to show off on your #richkidsofinstagram feed A conversation starter for your next outrageous caviar laden 1,000 year old wine and cheese / single issue advocacy reception A coffee table book for your evil lair, island get-a-way, or fifth vacation home. The multi-millionaire who will not be shamed into responsibly, socially conscious uses of their money. A gift to a loved one, namely myself because of the royalties this book is worth. But seriously, this book is written as both a shameless capitalist endeavor and a social experiment. By a shameless capitalist spirit, I mean that we are supposed to be living in a new world, where the internet gives us an amazing opportunity to develop wealth in an entrepreneurial manner. However, everytime I wikipedia some famous internet billionaire, I find that they went to the absolute best schools in the nation, had a degree in computer science, and some start-up money from a family member to launch a website or product. Instead, I'm sitting here with a PhD in a social science, typing these words in an attempt to see if anything with a half-assed marketing plan will actually sell Now if you are a #richkidsofinstagram or trust-fund baby who wasted much of the opportunity you had in your elite schools, well, there will be a simple version of this book made available if you take enough pity upon me to buy it. As for the social experiment, perhaps this book functions as an avenue to see how foolish people can be on the internet. Perhaps this book will result in an amazing peer-reviewed article in a prestigious journal, thus eternally out of reach of any graduate student without access to a library with a specific set of journal subscriptions. Perhaps the social experiment is inverted, as I am already rich and just wanting something to talk about at my next decadent social extravaganza. Actually, more than any of the aforementioned reasons, the primary impetus for this book was to win a metaphorical bet with my wife.We are too poor to wager anything against each other, and the effort is pointless with a joint bank account, but good God almighty will I never shut up about this book and that bet if this book sells a single damn copy. If you've actually read this far, then great. You are a man/woman/alien/child who stole their parent's credit card and will hopefully click enough buttons to buy this book. However, instead of talking about what this book means for you, and your ever increasing vanity or need to feel completion, attainment, and psychological sense of security through the purchase of material goods with a socially constructed hierarchy, let's take a moment to talk about what the purchase of this book means for me. Actually, another moment, since I just used half of this description to talk about myself and my needs above. When you purchase the full paperback version of this book, you'll be providing me with a 2,000 dollar royalty (don't cheap out and go for the kindle version, that just shows you a "middle class"). What does that mean for me and my family? It means a lot actually: 10 months of my toddler's health insurance 2.5 months of my mortgage That 401k I never started A college fund, else my child will be eternally stuck making less than 10 dollars an hour or faking a disability for government benefits Does your facebook have a ton of people posting gofundme links for their health insurance? Probably not, because again, you have to be insanely rich to even buy this book. Well, consider this the classy version of a gofundme account, just on amazon, and written as a lackluster book that may or may not be complete garbage once you buy it.

Book excerpt: The magnificent mountain of Potosiacute; in Bolivia yielded more silver than any other mountain or region of the world. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries this wealth flowed through Spain into Europe and played an important role in the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution and trade with Asia. Yet the grueling work of extracting the silver was left to the indigenous population of the Andes, who were enslaved by the Spanish and died by the thousands on the mountain. Today, Potosiacute; maintains this unique culture, based on its epic history. Approximately eighteen thousand miners still work in or around the mountain, searching for trace amounts of silver and tin. Inside the mountain, miners worship their devil, who is represented as a sexually potent Spaniard, lord of the mineral realm. Photographer Stephen Ferry has made many trips to Potosiacute; to document this ongoing drama. His color images describe this world, which echoes back to the birth of modern Europe yet is one of the poorest places in the Americas. The text by Eduardo Galeano illuminates the complexity of the intersection of ancient rituals and the grandeur of the mountain and complements Ferry's powerful portrait of this fascinating area. Ferry's photographs are divided into four sections: the miners' carnival; work that still takes place in and around the rich mountain; major institutions of civic life in the city of Potosiacute;; and the festival of Esprit?, in which miners sacrifice llamas to the devil within the mountain to appease his thirst for blood so that he will not take their lives with accidents or illness.

Book excerpt: "Social criticism at its scorching-hot best."--Barbara Ehrenreich "Think H.L. Mencken crossed with Jon Stewart."--The Phoenix In Rich People Things, Chris Lehmann lays bare the various dogmas and delusions that prop up plutocratic rule in the post-meltdown age. It's a humorous and harrowing tale of warped populism, phony reform, and blind deference to the nation's financial elite. As the author explains, American class privilege is very much like the idea of sex in a Catholic school--it's not supposed to exist in the first place, but once it presents itself in your mind's eye, you realize that it's everywhere. A concise and easy-to-use guide, Rich People Things catalogs the fortifications that shelter the opulent from the resentments of the hoi polloi. From ideological stanchions such as the Free Market through the castellation of media including The New York Times and Wired magazine, to gatekeepers such as David Brooks, Steve Forbes, and Alan Greenspan, Lehmann covers the vast array of comforting and comprehensive protections that allow the über-privileged to maintain their iron grip on almost half of America's wealth. With chapters on Malcolm Gladwell, the Supreme Court, the memoir, and more, no one is spared from Lehmann's pointed prose. Chris Lehmann is employed, ever precariously, as an editor for Yahoo! News, Bookforum, and The Baffler, while dissecting the excesses of his social betters for his column Rich People Things at TheAwl.com. He lives in Washington, DC, with his wife Ana Marie Cox and a quartet of excellent pets.

Book excerpt: Change the world one trip at a time. In this illuminating collection of stories and lessons from the road, acclaimed travel writer Rick Steves shares a powerful message that resonates now more than ever. With the world facing divisive and often frightening events, from Trump, Brexit, and Erdogan, to climate change, nativism, and populism, there's never been a more important time to travel. Rick believes the risks of travel are widely exaggerated, and that fear is for people who don't get out much. After years of living out of a suitcase, he still marvels at how different cultures find different truths to be self-evident. By sharing his experiences from Europe, Central America, Asia, and the Middle East, Rick shows how we can learn more about own country by viewing it from afar. With gripping stories from Rick's decades of exploration, this fully revised edition of Travel as a Political Act is an antidote to the current climate of xenophobia. When we travel thoughtfully, we bring back the most beautiful souvenir of all: a broader perspective on the world that we all call home. All royalties from the sale of Travel as a Political Act are donated to support the work of Bread for the World, a non-partisan organization working to end hunger at home and abroad.
