Book excerpt: These seven stories narrate powerful and empowering journeys of becoming and overcoming. The women in this anthology are deeply attuned to the challenges and hardships faced by women and girls on the African continent and in the Diaspora. They do not shy away from speaking about these hardships, offering up vulnerable stories that are emblematic of the ongoing disregard of women and girls in Africa and elsewhere. Triumphantly, these hardships fuel these inspiring women to claim their right to humanity, in this way effecting change in their societies and trailblazing a path for women and girls in Africa and beyond. Ultimately, these are triumphant stories of change and agency. They pave the way for future generations and make possible for what was previously thought impossible. Each chapter advocates for one of the Sustainable Development Goals and one of the demands of Africa Young Women Beijing+25 Manifesto. The seven stories in this compilation are a testimony to an Africa that is alive and vibrant and whose future brims with brilliance and promise. Readers from all corners of the world will feel this immense pride and inspiration for Africa is in and of the world. Here you will meet women in their twenties and thirties who have broken new ground and attained many firsts in their respective fields, paving the way for women and girls everywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fictionalized account of the Empress Dowager of China, Tsu Hsi, last of the Manchus. She was one who “ate life,” one for whom all the power of the Dragon throne could not give her what she sought. This is the story of Nala, born to luxury, who was sent at sixteen to the Summer Palace, to be the Emperor’s concubine, and who lived to wrest the throne from the dying monarch. It is the story of Jung Lu, the Manchu Lord who gave her the only love she was ever to know, and whose quiet and wise counsel gave her the wisdom to rule. It is the story of a country, a people, a way of life, and a hatred born of misunderstanding which carried tragic consequences. For nothing Jung Lu could say or do could soothe her hatred of the “foreign devils” and their woman ruler who dared to call herself by a name that meant “victorious.” For the first time the full picture of the Empress Dowager of China, Tsu His, last of the Manchus, is drawn to life. From her seat on the Dragon throne she commanded an Empire. The decisions she made still leave their mark on the world. Few women in history have held as much power. Yet the days were never long enough for all she wanted to do. Mrs. Jernigan tells the strange story of Tsu His’s love for her Prime Minister, which defied tradition, with smooth-paced narrative power, in an absorbing novel, full of pageantry and turbulence. FORBIDDEN CITY is a vivid portrait of one of the least-known but one of the most remarkable figures of history.

As Nala falls deeper into keeping up her lies and into love, she'll learn all the ways love is hard, and how self-love is revolutionary. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world no longer simple with clear enemies and ready strategies to protect oneself, the aging warriors from the Vietnam era are forced to once again fight for their lives. This time, it's not against a peasant force in the steamy jungles of Vietnam defending their homeland. This time they find themselves under attack in the forests of their own homeland by a fanatical force of Jihadists dedicated to the destruction of America itself. In addition o being vastly outnumbered and aging, the Americans have a unique disadvantage: they are all amputees. The only advantage that the Americans have is now it's their homeland that they are defending. To the end, it's not clear whether or not that and the few friendlies that are able to be recruited to the cause will be enough to prevail over their adversaries. The Vietnam Vets Amputee Group is both inspirational and an ode to those brave soldiers that fought not so long ago. They finally might be accorded the respect that they deserve, perhaps posthumously, from a changed and grateful nation.

Book excerpt: A genre-warping, time-travelling horror novel-slash-feminist manifesto for fans of Clarice Lispector and Jeanette Winterson. Welcome to 1990s Norway. White picket fences run in neat rows and Christian conservatism runs deep. But as the Artist considers her work, things start stirring themselves up. In a corner of Oslo a coven of witches begin cooking up some curses. A time-travelling Edvard Munch arrives in town to join a death metal band, closely pursued by the teenaged subject of his painting Puberty, who has murder on her mind. Meanwhile, out deep in the forest, a group of school girls get very lost and things get very strange. And awful things happen in aspic. Jenny Hval's latest novel is a radical fusion of queer feminist theory and experimental horror, and a unique treatise on magic, writing and art. "Strange and lyrical. Hval’s writing is surreal and rich with the grotesque banalities of human existence." —Publishers Weekly "The themes of alienation, queerness, and the unsettling nature of desire align Hval with modern mainstays like Chris Kraus, Ottessa Moshfegh, and Maggie Nelson." —Pitchfork

Book excerpt: Discover the nationally bestselling, true story of a life-changing friendship between a man and his rescue cat, Nala, as they adventure together on a bike journey around the world -- from the Instagram phenomenon @1bike1world. When 30-year-old Dean Nicholson set off from Scotland to cycle around the world, his aim was to learn as much as he could about our troubled planet. But he hadn't bargained on the lessons he'd learn from his unlikely companion. Three months after leaving home, on a remote road in the mountains between Montenegro and Bosnia, he came across an abandoned kitten. Something about the piercing eyes and plaintive meowing of the bedraggled little cat proved irresistible. He couldn't leave her to her fate, so he put her on his bike and then, with the help of local vets, nursed her back to health. Soon on his travels with the cat he named Nala, they forged an unbreakable bond -- both curious, independent, resilient and adventurous. The video of how they met has had 20 million views and their Instagram has grown to almost 750k followers -- and still counting! Experiencing the kindness of strangers, visiting refugee camps, rescuing animals through Europe and Asia, Dean and Nala have already learned that the unexpected can be pretty amazing. Together with Garry Jenkins, writer with James Bowen of the bestselling A Street Cat Named Bob, Dean shares the extraordinary tale of his and Nala's inspiring and heart-warming adventure together.

Book excerpt: In his painstakingly long academic journey through mountains of source material available in Europe, Prof Prodosh Aich establishes that the entire understanding of India developed by self-claimed scholars from West is erroneous, since the initial attempt to comprehend ancient India through the Vedas was itself faulty. He questions the validity of the works of the famous western scholars who translated the Vedic literature into English, German and Italian. A vast majority of them did not even set foot on the Indian soil and those who came here did not learn the ancient languages in an organised manner, even though translation needs an equal command of both languages. Since neither the Vedic language nor the Sanskrit were spoken languages since ages, it was all the more difficult for them to develop language skills required for translation. Colonialist Imperial England had prepared a concerted design to establish the superiority of blond-blue eyed-white-Christian culture over other cultures that they opted to define as "primitive", particularly in case of India. Prof Aich uses juxtaposition to drive home a point and leaves judgement to readers. He frames a question and then answers it by using the primary source material. The book is bound to trigger an academic debate in the West also and would go a long way to establish once for all that the much-trumpeted and self-championed discipline of Indology in the West has in fact been based on falsehood. It must have been a design that none of the scholars so far bothered to use the existing material, so abundantly available, which could have helped to unravel the truth about the colonial powers and imperial administration and bureaucracy. Scholars after scholars, even after the end of colonial empire, have continued to overlook the material that would have removed the well-laid myths about Indian society, polity and culture.
