Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experience of becoming a grandfather is sufficiently different from becoming a father for the first time that it merits to capture the feelings and emotions that one would experience before the arrival of the first grandchild. The experience acquired after the first child is born gives a more mature perspective on life that is worthwhile sharing with the grandchild to be born. May this diary contribute to enhance, enrich, and support the experience of all those that might have the golden opportunity of becoming grandparents. It is a thrilling and invigorating moment of life that feels like one’s life experience of having become a father is rewarded because one can re-live that moment without having to deal with the immediate responsibilities of first-time fatherhood.

Book excerpt: You don't have to learn everything about genetic genealogy before asking specific questions of your DNA! That's the premise of Diahan Southard's brand new book, Your DNA Guide - the Book, now available for pre-order at a special sale price. Your DNA Guide - the Book is like no other genetic genealogy book on the market. Instead of learning more-than-you-need-to-know in textbook style, you'll choose a specific DNA question to start exploring right away. You'll follow concrete step-by-step plans, learning important DNA concepts--in plain English--as you go. Do you want to learn who your 2X great grandmother is? Turn to page 23. Do you want to know how you are related to one of your DNA matches? Page 37. As you proceed, you check your progress and get new guidance based on your specific results at each stage. (Including troubleshooting, like when your matches just aren't responding or your great-grandparents turn out to be first cousins.) This powerful, hands-on approach is based on Diahan's 20 years of experience in the genetic genealogy industry and especially in the past five years, as she helps clients one-on-one make DNA discoveries. It became clear to her that while each client's situation may be unique, there are patterns in how you can find solutions that you can apply yourself. Your DNA Guide - the Book is for anyone who has taken a DNA test or may want to. It helps genealogists reconstruct family trees. It helps adoptees identify biological relatives. It can help you identify a specific DNA match. In short, it helps anyone explore what their DNA--and their DNA matches--can tell them about their origins.

Book excerpt: A hidden story of human triumph, Crescendo takes you on the rare journey of a musical prodigy who changed an entire community forever. More than eighty years ago, a musical prodigy with a brilliant mind was born into a poor, uneducated, and abusive family in rural South Georgia. At three years of age, Fred Allen could play Mozart sonatas on the piano without missing a note. But in spite of his obvious talent, Fred’s parents discouraged him from expressing his creativity and intelligence, even going so far as locking him away from the old piano in their home. Forced to fend for himself through his adolescent years, Fred knew that if he was ever to make something of himself, he would need to find a way to rise above his broken background. With incredible effort, and a few miracles along the way, Fred managed to do just that, eventually earning acceptance into The Julliard School in New York City. While simultaneously attending Juilliard, Union Theological Seminary, and Columbia University, he also began directing a local church choir, where he caught the attention of the music industry. During the musical revolution of the 1960s, Fred earned numerous Grammy nominations and built a growing reputation within the industry. But just as his new career was beginning to take off, Fred was faced with an impossible decision. His wife announced that she no longer wanted to raise their daughter in New York City and was heading home to the South. Fred had come so far from the pain and brokenness of his past, he couldn’t imagine giving up everything just to return to his childhood home. Trying not to think about what could have been, Fred took a job as a high school music teacher in his hometown of Thomasville, Georgia, a community of only 30,000 people. Far from the executive suites of RCA and the allure of Broadway, Fred never could have imagined that his new role would not only transform his life but also change an entire community forever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Bestseller! An extraordinary look at what it means to grow old and a heartening guide to well-being, Happiness Is a Choice You Make weaves together the stories and wisdom of six New Yorkers who number among the “oldest old”— those eighty-five and up. In 2015, when the award-winning journalist John Leland set out on behalf of The New York Times to meet members of America’s fastest-growing age group, he anticipated learning of challenges, of loneliness, and of the deterioration of body, mind, and quality of life. But the elders he met took him in an entirely different direction. Despite disparate backgrounds and circumstances, they each lived with a surprising lightness and contentment. The reality Leland encountered upended contemporary notions of aging, revealing the late stages of life as unexpectedly rich and the elderly as incomparably wise. Happiness Is a Choice You Make is an enduring collection of lessons that emphasizes, above all, the extraordinary influence we wield over the quality of our lives. With humility, heart, and wit, Leland has crafted a sophisticated and necessary reflection on how to “live better”—informed by those who have mastered the art.

As a primer on the subject of psychology, it is unique because it comes through the lens of a novelist with insightful references to the junction of psychology and literature. Early in the book, Solares gives an overview of why the field of psychology fascinates him: Vast regions of the human mind havent yet been mapped. He encourages the reader: I can only hope that you will fall madly in love with [psychology]. I give you these letters thoroughly drenched in that same spirit, starting with Freud and ending with the discovery of hypnosis and the volatile introduction of drugs into psychotherapy. Solares explores Freud's contributions and limitations, and does the same for Jung. He also tackles Behaviorism. Pragmatism, spirituality, an entertaining predecessor of Freud, Franz Mesmer, the use and misuse of drugs in psychological treatment, and role of meditation in psychology. The Golden Coin: Freud or Jung?, an award-winning play, features an enlightening and lively intellectual duel between the two famous psychologists of the title, one of whom visits the other from the afterlife.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story I was told when I was fourteen or fifteen years old and it is based on a true story about a cave at the top of a mountain along the Red River. Three men went into a cave that overlooked Red River around 1923 or 1927. You could see the river from the cave, but you couldn't see the cave from the river. As they were searching through the cave they found a pit with a log lying across it about two feet across with a hair rope tied around it descending down, down into the pit. They said it looked like horsehair. They lowered one of the men into the pit to approximately thirty or forty feet where he landed on a rock ledge. He walked around the ledge shining his carbide light and noticed the pit descended another 100 feet or so. Circumferencing the ledge area he noticed another opening. He yelled out to the two men at the top of the pit to let them know he found another cave entrance. As he shined his light into the opening of the cave, he became excited; he saw Spanish helmets, breastplates, muskets, bows, and arrows. There were also spears, trunks with clothing, gold, and silver. His heart began to race as he stood at the edge of the entrance. He looked down and noticed a mask mostly covered with dirt on the cave floor in the opening. He bent over, picked it up and brushed the dust off the mask. When he did, the mask began to glow and voices filled the air around him. The voices were deafening and the mask glowed as if it were on fire. He threw the mask down to the cave floor and started screaming pull me up, please get me out of here, pull me up. They said when his feet hit the cave floor he ran out of the cave never stopping until he had gotten back to the car. He had covered five miles to get back to the car, crossing over mountains and dry creek beds. They couldn't catch him. An hour later when they got back to the car, he was lying on the back floorboard covered with a blanket. When they finally coaxed him out of the car, he told them everything that he experienced. He said: "I'll never go into that cave again as long as I live!"
