Book excerpt: This thesis represents the first wide-field photometric and spectroscopic survey of star clusters in the nearby late-spiral galaxy M33. This system is the nearest example of a dwarf spiral galaxy, which may have a unique role in the process of galaxy formation and evolution. The cold dark matter paradigm of galaxy formation envisions large spiral galaxies, such as the Milky Way, being formed from the merger and accretion of many smaller dwarf galaxies. The role that dwarf spiral galaxies play in this process is largely unclear. One of the goals of this thesis is to use the star cluster population of M33 to study its formation and evolution from its early stages to the present. The thesis presents a new comprehensive catalog of M33 star clusters, which includes magnitudes, colors, structural parameters, and several preliminary velocity measurements. Based on an analysis of these data, the thesis concludes that, among other things, the evolution of M33 has likely been influenced by its nearby massive neighbor M31.

Book excerpt: Many books attempt to teach us how to live this life in love, peace and harmony. However, few thoroughly explain why we encounter outer obstacles and inner conflict. White Lies Dark Truth explains in detail how every person creates a belief system, starting at birth, based upon the influence of others. The ideas and concepts that we accept become belief structures ingrained in our consciousness. There are over six billion people on Earth, and all of them go through life believing as they do because of what they have been told. Each person measures their success and happiness according to someone else's ideas, including those of their parents, their peers, the media, government, politics, and religion- just to name a few. White Lies Dark Truth shows us that our conflicts spring from attempting to take newly discovered truths and fit them into an old belief structure that is made up of repetitions of half-truths, untruths, dogma, and illusions that have been passed down through the ages. The journey of discovery is one of personal transformation and conflicts can be resolved by exchanging truth for the white lies we have been taught. Our view of reality must change, if we are to survive. Based on author's 23 years of research, study, and practice in both Eastern and Western philosophy White Lies Dark Truth: -Focuses on the physical and psychological impediments to happiness, success, peace, love, and spiritual growth; -Challenges the reader to examine their present belief structure; -Guides readers through the self-discovery process; -Helps readers assess where they are now and pinpoint areas in their lives that require change or further development; -Suggests alternatives to traditional concepts, ideas and thinking. Beginning with present awareness, White Lies Dark Truth embarks readers on a journey within. Imagine you are traveling to New York and there are many different routes to get there. The route you take depends upon the point where your journey begins.

It's not that bad, she told herself. In sharing their experiences from girlhood to the boardroom, from Cape Town's suburbs to the hills of KwaZulu- Natal, women from different walks of life show how chillingly common male violence against women is. Together, their voices form a deafening chorus. Gender-based violence feeds on shame and silence but in this extraordinary collection, brave women reclaim their power and summon the courage in others to do the same. In speaking out, sharing what was once secret, shame's hold is broken. Heart-rending at times, it is the honesty and courage of the writing that truly inspires.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an issue dedicated almost entirely to the spiritual artform of meditation, Nectar of Nondual Truth explores and presents this most needed and necessary facet of spiritual life through the lighted windows of various religious traditions in conscious operation in today’s world. Yogic-based eight-limbed meditation upon everything from objects in matter, to the realization of a yogi’s conscious Essence is taken up. Meditation on the timeless, beneficial utterance of divine names in a tradition that also favors Reality as nameless, is studied thoroughly by a Rabbi via the Jewish tradition. Then, even the very breath that utters the divine names is inspected in an article on meditation by a teacher in the Sufi tradition. The striking and sobering question asked in several traditions of India, that of “Who Am I,” is looked at first hand by an advanced meditator on personal retreat in the Ch’an Zen tradition, who then also takes his place as an interviewer to question a Japanese Roshi about meditation practice in the Soto Zen tradition. Three revered Swamis of the Ramakrishna Order offer up their insights into this superlative examination of meditation and meditator, from different perspectives. Specifically, the very purpose of sitting still and looking within to find the purpose of the entire practice is presented by a long-time practitioner, and finally, an article scrutinizing this most subtle of all yogas from the succinctly nondual position is pondered via the noble Advaita Vedanta perspective. Thus does this age-old and crucial principle of inmost practice — known in Raja Yoga as the singular doorway to Samadhi or Nirvana, — receive a thorough observation from all angles of sensitive, experienced, human awareness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Word Biblical Commentary delivers the best in biblical scholarship, from the leading scholars of our day who share a commitment to Scripture as divine revelation. This series emphasizes a thorough analysis of textual, linguistic, structural, and theological evidence. The result is judicious and balanced insight into the meanings of the text in the framework of biblical theology. These widely acclaimed commentaries serve as exceptional resources for the professional theologian and instructor, the seminary or university student, the working minister, and everyone concerned with building theological understanding from a solid base of biblical scholarship. Overview of Commentary Organization Introduction—covers issues pertaining to the whole book, including context, date, authorship, composition, interpretive issues, purpose, and theology. Each section of the commentary includes: Pericope Bibliography—a helpful resource containing the most important works that pertain to each particular pericope. Translation—the author’s own translation of the biblical text, reflecting the end result of exegesis and attending to Hebrew and Greek idiomatic usage of words, phrases, and tenses, yet in reasonably good English. Notes—the author’s notes to the translation that address any textual variants, grammatical forms, syntactical constructions, basic meanings of words, and problems of translation. Form/Structure/Setting—a discussion of redaction, genre, sources, and tradition as they concern the origin of the pericope, its canonical form, and its relation to the biblical and extra-biblical contexts in order to illuminate the structure and character of the pericope. Rhetorical or compositional features important to understanding the passage are also introduced here. Comment—verse-by-verse interpretation of the text and dialogue with other interpreters, engaging with current opinion and scholarly research. Explanation—brings together all the results of the discussion in previous sections to expose the meaning and intention of the text at several levels: (1) within the context of the book itself; (2) its meaning in the OT or NT; (3) its place in the entire canon; (4) theological relevance to broader OT or NT issues. General Bibliography—occurring at the end of each volume, this extensive bibliographycontains all sources used anywhere in the commentary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 New York Times Bestseller “Funny and smart as hell” (Bill Gates), Allie Brosh’s Hyperbole and a Half showcases her unique voice, leaping wit, and her ability to capture complex emotions with deceptively simple illustrations. FROM THE PUBLISHER: Every time Allie Brosh posts something new on her hugely popular blog Hyperbole and a Half the internet rejoices. This full-color, beautifully illustrated edition features more than fifty percent new content, with ten never-before-seen essays and one wholly revised and expanded piece as well as classics from the website like, “The God of Cake,” “Dogs Don’t Understand Basic Concepts Like Moving,” and her astonishing, “Adventures in Depression,” and “Depression Part Two,” which have been hailed as some of the most insightful meditations on the disease ever written. Brosh’s debut marks the launch of a major new American humorist who will surely make even the biggest scrooge or snob laugh. We dare you not to. FROM THE AUTHOR: This is a book I wrote. Because I wrote it, I had to figure out what to put on the back cover to explain what it is. I tried to write a long, third-person summary that would imply how great the book is and also sound vaguely authoritative—like maybe someone who isn’t me wrote it—but I soon discovered that I’m not sneaky enough to pull it off convincingly. So I decided to just make a list of things that are in the book: Pictures Words Stories about things that happened to me Stories about things that happened to other people because of me Eight billion dollars* Stories about dogs The secret to eternal happiness* *These are lies. Perhaps I have underestimated my sneakiness!
