Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original and provocative work begins by examining the shift of scientific paradigms that took place in the late eighteenth century, a shift illustrated by the report of a French Royal Commission appointed in 1784 to investigate Mesmerism. The reactions to Mesmerism among the Commission members--in particular the chemist Lavoisier and the botanist Jussieu--crystallized conflicts about the notion of reason and its role as a scientific ideal, about how science ought to be done. The Commission's denunciation of Mesmerism as the work of the "imagination" then serves as the starting point for the authors' reconsideration of the history of psychoanalysis, notably its suppression and repression of phenomena associated with hypnosis--imagination, suggestion, and empathy--in its search to establish itself as a science in accord with the new ideal of scientific reason. Examining the new and often troubled relationship in psychoanalysis between therapeutic effectiveness and advances in theory, the authors highlight the challenge to Freudian ideals in the 1920's by Otto Rank and Sandor Ferenczi. The discrediting of Ferenczi--engineered to a large extent by Ernest Jones and Freud himself--was an attempt to "purify" psychoanalysis of the effects of suggestion. The authors discuss Freud's own therapeutic nihilism occasioned by his recognition that suggestion, by means of the transference relationship, played an uncontrollable role in psychoanalytic therapy. In assessing Freud's legacy, the authors examine evolving notions of psychoanalysis, especially the role played by the effects of suggestion in recent theoretical representations of the development of the subject. Asserting that hypnosis and the challenge it poses to our understanding of human motivation, reason, and the mind/body relationship constitutes the fourth narcissistic wound to the human ego (after those introduced by Copernicus, Darwin, and Freud), the authors analyze Lacan's rejection of hypnosis and explain current resistance to hypnosis through its challenge to the modern scientific notion of reason.

FISCHGOLD (Paris); The Teaching of Hypnosis, chairmen Dr. C. CEDERCREUTZ (Hamina) and Dr. H. RosEN (Baltimore); Hypnosis and Pain, chairman Dr. M.H. ERICKSON (Phoenix); Hypnosis and the Psychotropic Drugs, chairman Dr. B.B. RAGINSKY (Montreal). The official languages of the Congress (German, French and English) were not always the speakers' mother tongues. A certain amount of editing was therefore necessary before publication, and this retarded the printing. Approximately half of the papers appear in this volume. We wish to thank the following organizations for the help they granted the Congress. Prof. J. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition to his philosophical works and innovative novels, the eighteenth-century writer Denis Diderot is most often recognized as one of the major authors of the Encyclopédie. Described by scholars as a modern and provocative thinker and writer, Diderot inspired intellectual discussion with his theories of artistic mimesis, in which he placed special emphasis on what is not stated in words, but is conveyed through gestures and other non-verbal methods of communication. This book explores Diderot's representation of the body as a tableau vivant - a literary painting in which the narrator portrays his characters as if suspended in a state of oscillation between paralysis and movement. The Function of the Dream and the Body in Diderot's Works discusses how Diderot's depiction of the body poses problems of interpretation for the serious reader/spectator, who, as in Freudian dream analysis, must generate a narrative based on a visual painting of the body's silent speech.

Scientific hypnosis has made great advances particularly since World War II, both as part of basic psychological science concerned with the understanding of brain, mind, and personality and as a professional skill in which knowledge of hypnosis is used to serve human welfare by enhancing the quality of life for those who have the good fortune to benefit from hypnotherapy and the related practice of hypnoanalysis. The reader is brought abreast of these developments through the arrangement of the chapters into two sections of the book, with the first four chapters explaining the basics of hypnosis as an altered state of consciousness interpreted theoretically from several points of view.
