This book was released on 2015-11-21 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hymns of the Early Church : Being translations from the poetry of the Latin church, arranged in the order of the Christian year The Latin poetry of the Christian Church presents a tempting field for the exercise of scholarship and research. The relation in which it stands on the one hand to the classic poetry of Greece and Italy, and on the other to the Liturgies of the Eastern Church, the placing of accent in the room of quantity, and the rise and growth of rhyme—these and such-like matters will always prove attractive to experts and specialists. They are, however, quite beyond the scope of this brief paper. Those who wish to make an exhaustive study of a subject which has many sides and a copious literature, would do well to betake themselves to such standard works as are noted below. The general reader may find something to profit and to interest him in the following general survey. The title placed on our Saviour’s cross, setting forth His accusation—“Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews,” was written in three languages—in Hebrew and in Greek and in Latin. That collocation of languages gives the order in which the hymnody of the Church developed. Hebrew hymnody is contained for the most part in the Hebrew Psalter; for the distinction between psalms and hymns is not one that admits of being applied to all Hebrew poetry. Our Lord and His disciples, as they went out to the Mount of Olives after the institution and first observance of the Supper Sacrament, sang a portion of the Great Hallel, which consists of Psalms cxiii. to cxviii. inclusive. Their doing so is described in the New Testament as singing “an hymn,” just as the singing of Paul and Silas in the Philippian prison is said to be singing hymns unto God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns of the Greek Church: Translated, With Introduction and Notes II. The renderings contained in this volume are the product of many happy hours during the past five years. No method was adopted in the work. As the translator waded through the closely printed pages of the Greek offices, what appeared at first sight to be lines worthy of translation were taken up and examined, sometimes to be cast aside again because of some unremovable blemish, at other times to be moulded to the form which they now bear Of the forty-seven pieces, thirty - five appear for the first time in English verse. For the original, the translator has gone to the service - books, and for the most part has confined himself to the hymns which are to be found in the triodion, containing the Lenten services; and in the pentecostarion, in which are found the hymns for the services of Easter and Pentecost. A few specimens are also given from other offices, particularly that for Christmas. Renderings from the work of the earlier Greek hymn-writers are added at the end of this volume; but, unlike the hymns of the Church service-books, these hymns originally are in the classical measures, and illustrate the work of the best Christian poets, who in some cases wrote extensively. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Latin Hymnaries: An Index of Hymns in Hymnaries Before 1100, With an Appendix From Later Sources An exhaustive index of all Latin Hymnaries before 1500 would mean visits to countless libraries, and an amount of toil and outlay probably out of all proportion to, the results. The present index provides, on a more modest scale, a convenient book of reference for those interested in early Latin hymns; and gives at any rate a fair idea of what Latin hymns were actually used over Europe before the year 1100. In order to Show the continuity of use throughout the Medieval period some Hymnaries of the twelfth century, with a few later still, princi pally written in England, have also been indexed; many of these manuscripts have the ancient melodies set to the hymns. In the main index references are given to all the hymnaries, but the first lines included are only of hymns found in mss before 1100; the first lines of those found only in the mss after 1100 are grouped together as an Appendix.
