Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns of Praise, Prayer, and Devout Meditation It may be interesting to add, that the Hymn at page 169, (published in the first editions of the Congregational Hymn Book, but afterwards omitted, ) was written with a view of furnishing words expressive of Christian faith and feeling to the music adapted to Pope's popular ode, Vital spark, which has nothing distinctively Christian about it but the title. Also, that the Hymn at page 121 Day ever blessed) was written to a very sweet air in the Chants set to the words J our du Seigneur, &c. But in writing this little book I hope that a money consideration has had noth ing to do with it. My object has been to ben efit mankind and for the comfort of all Chris tians, that they might become more interested in the spiritual life, and be less wrapped up in the things of the world. But there is a way in which I feel that I have been compensated already, and that is by the strengthening and comforting of my own mind in the consideration of God's love and care for His people. It has helped much in passing my remnant of days, and it occurred to me that if these things were comforting to me they might be to others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Devotions in the Ancient Way of Offices: With Psalms, Hymns, and Prayers, for Every Day in the Week, and Every Holy Day in the Year Ration has been accustomed to sing them, versions which he would doubtless have gladly employed instead of his own less successful efforts. To have retained these latter would, no doubt, have added to the interest of the book as a mere antiquarian reprint, but with prejudice to its utility as an manual of devotion, the sole character in which it now appears again. It has never quite lost its charm, and old copies of the various adaptations of it, scattered far and wide, still assist the meditations and prayers of devout souls in many places; so that it may well be that, even amidst the variety and abundance of cognate works which pour incessantly from the press, John Austin's pious volume may meet, more completely than any other, the special needs of not a few seekers after holiness of life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology gathers 368 poems by 80 British women poets of the long eighteenth century. Few of these poems have been reprinted since originally published, and all are crucial to understanding fully the literary history of women writers. Paula R. Backscheider and Catherine E. Ingrassia demonstrate the enormous diversity of poetry produced during this time by organizing the poems in three broad and deliberately overlapping categories: by genre, establishing that women wrote in all of the forms that men did with equal mastery and creativity; by theme, offering a revisionary look at the range of topics these writers addressed, including war, ecology, friendship, religion, and the stages of life; and by the poems’ more specific focus on the women’s experiences as writers. Backscheider and Ingrassia have selected poems that represent the best work of skilled poets, creating a wonderful mix of canonical and little-known pieces. They include the complete texts of longer poems that are abridged or omitted in other collections. Their substantial part introductions, textual notes, bibliographical information, and biographical sketches situate the poets and their writings within the cultural and political milieu in which they appeared. To generate further scholarship on this subject, this essential anthology puts primary texts in front of students, scholars, and general readers. It fills the persistent need to document women’s poetic expression during the long eighteenth century and to rewrite the literary history of the period, a history from which women have largely been excluded.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Co-Winner, James Russell Lowell Prize, Modern Language Association This major study offers a broad view of the writing and careers of eighteenth-century women poets, casting new light on the ways in which poetry was read and enjoyed, on changing poetic tastes in British culture, and on the development of many major poetic genres and traditions. Rather than presenting a chronological survey, Paula R. Backscheider explores the forms in which women wrote and the uses to which they put those forms. Considering more than forty women in relation to canonical male writers of the same era, she concludes that women wrote in all of the genres that men did but often adapted, revised, and even created new poetic kinds from traditional forms. Backscheider demonstrates that knowledge of these women's poetry is necessary for an accurate and nuanced literary history. Within chapters on important canonical and popular verse forms, she gives particular attention to such topics as women's use of religious poetry to express candid ideas about patriarchy and rape; the continuing evolution and important role of the supposedly antiquarian genre of the friendship poetry; same-sex desire in elegy by women as well as by men; and the status of Charlotte Smith as a key figure of the long eighteenth century, not only as a Romantic-era poet.

Book excerpt: Situated between Europe and Asia, Russia has systematically challenged the European theories attached to nationhood due to its geopolitical and cultural peculiarities. After the rise of European nationalist movements, imperial Russia posed a threat to the very existence of the Germanic empires of Britain, Germany and Austria, and was frequently evoked to epitomise European barbarism, paganism, despotism and the Orient. In its struggle to acquire a new identity, which would bridge the gap with Western empires, Russia could not conform to the rising Anglo-Saxon movements that sought to glorify Nordic supremacy at the expense of the Oriental Other. Drawing upon this binary opposition between the Orient and the Occident, the Russian Empire concentrated on the development of its own nation-building theories, which managed to incorporate the ascending Pan-Slavic wave into its nationalist agenda. The anti-Western rhetoric that often characterised Russian politics contributed to the subversion of the conventional Western perspective of the Orient and the emergence of Eurasianism as a political theory that exalted the different traits of its imperial system. This book sets the focus on the representations of the Russian Empire from 1792 until 1912 in the field of travel literature. To this end, it selects British and American travel narratives of the aforementioned period to explore all aspects of Russian identity and culture. For this reason, it addresses major issues attached to Russian history and culture that were investigated by Western travellers in their attempt to approach the Russian Empire.
