Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry that responds to the Quran and to the tradition it created. Written for the general reader and the specialist, Muslim and non-Muslim, East-West Poetry responds to the Quran, scriptural heart of Islam, and to the tradition it created. An introduction relates the Quran to Hebrew and Christian biblical writing and to Rumi, who illumined the Quran with Sufi mystic wisdom; and we sample earlier Western poetic celebrations of Islamic culture. Rarely has a book been so timely as this one. It is an East-West collection that comes at just the right moment in our cultural history, now that America is reawakening to the plenitude of its varied traditions. The double role of the books author as researcher and poet benefits the reader of the 140 Islam-related lyrics offered here. Katharina Mommsen Martin Bidney has [brought] the Christian Gospel and the Muslim Quran together with the Torah to form a luminous torch of love and understanding. Khalil Semaan

This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One cannot work continuously at a subject, and all the while get the thoughtful criticism of his observers, without improving his methods. From a review of a recent volume by the writer, the following is taken:—“It seems to us that it is in the adaptation, rather than strict translation, that the wealth of thought and emotion buried in the service books of the Eastern Church will be minted into coin of golden praise meet for sanctuary use, and comparable in worth and beauty to the splendid currency of these latter days.” This is strictly true, and it is the conviction which has for some time possessed the author, with the result that he has been giving less attention to translation, or transliteration, and more attention to suggestion, adaptation, and reminiscence. One cannot spend a day with the Greek service books (say with the Triodion, which contains the incomparable Lenten and Easter offices) without having his mind filled with thoughts the most beautiful, thoughts which can sometimes be expressed in almost identical phrase with the original, but which oftener, in order to do them justice by revealing them in all their richness, require to be dwelt upon, expanded, and clothed in appropriate western phrase. This is without doubt the best way in which to deal with the praise material of the Greek service books, and the present writer has set himself in this volume to act according to that conviction. Here, there are fewer translations than in any former volume, and the greater number of the hymns are reminiscences of the Greek. The contents of this book may be ranged under three categories:—A few translations or renderings, as literal as it is possible or desirable to make them; centos, or patchwork, i.e., pieces which are not versions of any particular hymn in the original, but which are made up of portions of various hymns; and suggestions, or reminiscences of the Greek. In the case of the last, the best that can be said of them is that they owe their existence in the present instance, to the Greek. While to the ordinary reader there may be nothing in these suggestions to indicate their source, no one who is acquainted with the praise of the Eastern Church will fail to detect here and there certain marks which inevitably announce their origin. In most cases initial Greek headlines have been dispensed with, for the reason that they can serve no useful purpose, nor indicate with any certainty the source of any particular hymn.

Download or read book Renderings of Church Hymns From Eastern and Western Office Books written by Robert Maude Moorsom and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Renderings of Church Hymns From Eastern and Western Office Books The following renderings are published, in the hope that English Churchmen may be stimulated to read the ecclesiastical books of Eastern Churches, in the original or in translations, and put their hymns into such an English form that they may be introduced into our services. The Catholic Church of Great and Greater Britain ought to give her hand to each and all of her Catholic sisters. When Christians meet together to praise God their hymns of thanksgiving and penitence are alike in unity and concord. When the Greek Catholic, the Armenian Catholic, the Roman Catholic, and the English Catholic unite in singing the same chant, listening Angels say, "Behold how these Christians are one." And so all who love unity desire that the Church of England may be in touch with every branch of the Church of God. One step towards reaching this unity would be that English sons and daughters of the Church should use in their occasional services the great hymns of the Churches of the East. Why do we not? Because we know little or nothing about them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
