Ils l'ont dû en premier lieu aux "psaumes de Gélineau" et à la Bible de Jérusalem. Ils ont aujourd'hui à leur disposition plusieurs traductions de qualité. Toutes ces traductions ont en commun d'être faites sur l'hébreu. Elles restituent donc parfaitement la prière des "cherchant-Dieu" du Premier Testament. Or la "lecture chrétienne" de ces psaumes hébreux n'a jamais été oubliée (même si elle n'est pas toujours pratiquée). Et cependant, en utilisant les psaumes hébreux de manière exclusive, les chrétiens ont peur-être perdu quelque saveur de leur prière. En effet, s'ils prient Dieu dans les psaumes, ils n'y rencontrent pas, directement, Jésus. Peuvent-ils s'y résoudre ? Il n'en a pas toujours été ainsi. Dans l'Eglise, jusqu'à ces derniers temps (l'immédiat après-guerre), le texte hébreu des psaumes ne fut jamais officiellement utilisé mais bien - pour les Eglises d'Orient, le texte grec de la LXX - et pour celle d'Occident, les traductions latines sur la LXX, en particulier la Vulgate, traduites certes sur le grec mais écrites par des chrétiens et pour l'usage des chrétiens et donc "patinées" par eux d'Evangile. Ces textes permettaient une toute autre lecture que l'hébreu, puisqu'ils célébraient clairement Jésus. Certes, au long des siècles, incompris de presque tous (sauf les lettrés), le latin avait tiré un voile sur la portée christologique des psaumes. Mais dans les premiers siècles où il était langue courante, il permettait à tous de rencontrer ouvertement le christ et ses mystères dans le texte même du psautier. La traduction présentée ici, sans diminuer l'importance des psaumes de l'hébreu, voudrait permettre aux chrétiens de connaître la richesse de leur prière passée, afin de mieux la poursuivre.

Peut - ètre ne sera - t - il pas inutile de faire précéder le recueil que nous réimprimons aujourd'hui d'un petit nom bre de pages destinées à rappeler les noms de ceux qui en ont composé autrefois. On s'est occupé de très bonne heure à traduire en vers français les hymnes des poètes ecclésias tiques grecs et latins. La traduction de Nicolas Mauroy, le jeune, de Troyes, parut dans cette ville en 1597. Gui Lefèvre de la Boderie, secrétaire du duc d'anjou et l'un des plus sevans hommes du seizième siècle, publia une autre traduction en vers, en l 578. Ne se bornant pas à traduire les hymnes du Bréviaire romain, il s'est exercé aussi sur des hymnes de poètes latins et italiens beaucoup plus modernes. Jacques de Courtin, sieur de Cissé, a donné, en 1581, une version des hymnes de synej sins. Dans le dix - sept1eme siècle, le cardinal Du Per ron, le père Adam, jésuite, et un prètre nommé Louis Chassain, prirent rang parmi les traducteurs en vers des hymnes des anciens. Leurs traductions sont aujourd'hui à peu près oubliées; on ne se sou vient plus que de celle de Lemaistre de Saci et de celle de Pierre Corneille, entreprise, dit ce der nier, pour satisfaire en quelque sorte à l'obliga tion que nous avons tous d'employer à la gloire de Dieu du moins une partie des taleus que nous en avons reçus. Popkin in Marsh's Library on July 7-8, 1994. It was one of the most stimulating events held in the Library in recent years. Although we have hosted many special seminars on such subjects as rare books, the Huguenots, and Irish church history, this was the first time that a seminar was held which was specifically related to the books in our own collection. It seems surprising that this type of seminar has never been held before although the reason is obvious. Since there is no printed catalogue of the Library scholars are not aware of its contents. In fact the collection of books by late seventeenth and early eighteenth century European authors on, for example, such subjects as biblical criticism, political and religious controversy, is one of the richest parts of the Library's collections. Some years ago we were informed that of the 25,000 books in Marsh's at least 5,000 English books or books printed in England were printed between 1640 and 1700.
