Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improvements in software, instrumentation, and feedback control as well as deepening linkages between fundamental aspects of process technology have vastly changed the practice of industrial process control. Newcomers to the field must have a strong understanding of the new demands and capabilities of modern process control operations. Reflecting these changes, Introduction to Process Control infuses traditional topics with industry-based practices that provide more integrated process operation, control, and information systems. The authors adopt a thoughtfully conceived approach that follows a "Continuing Problem" throughout the text, adding new concepts and strategies to the example, which culminates in a complete control design strategy. This fully realized system is implemented in MATLABĀ®, with software downloads available from the CRC Web site. This approach not only provides seamless continuity, but also addresses the plantwide control problem and engenders hands-on, step-by-step understanding of how the concepts apply to real processes. The book introduces data processing and reconciliation along with process monitoring as integral components of overall control system architecture. Along with an introduction to modern architectures of industrial computer control systems, Introduction to Process Control offers unique and unparalleled coverage of the expanded role of process control in modern industry, from modeling the process to implementing a plant-wide system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The symposium on Hydrotreatment and Hydrocracking of Oil Fractions aims to provide a global perspective and an inspection of the state-of-the-art of these processes. New American, European and Japanese environmental regulations call for advanced hydrotreatment processes for HDS and HDN for the removal of S- and Ni-components from oil fractions. These will alter the product slate of the oil refineries and the hydrocarbon composition of these products. Hydrocracking will play an important part in this shift. Adapting the operating conditions will not suffice to reach the desired product specifications and yields. Adequate catalysts will have to be developed. Powerful tools are now available for this, e.g. surface science techniques, molecular modeling and new types of reactors operated in a nonsteady mode. Another instrument in the improvement of hydrotreatment and hydrocracking units is the availability of more realistic kinetic models. These are based on a judicious insight into the reaction mechanism, also provided by the above-mentioned tools. Progress in the analytical techniques has allowed the reduction of the lumping of components in these kinetic models and first order kinetic equations are gradually replaced by equations accounting for the adsorption of the various components. More detailed and more realistic reactor models are now based on rigorous hydrodynamic models and their application has become possible through the rapidly increasing possibilities of computers.

Book excerpt: The role of the chemical reactor is crucial for the industrial conversion of raw materials into products and numerous factors must be considered when selecting an appropriate and efficient chemical reactor. Chemical Reaction Engineering and Reactor Technology defines the qualitative aspects that affect the selection of an industrial chemical reactor and couples various reactor models to case-specific kinetic expressions for chemical processes. Offering a systematic development of the chemical reaction engineering concept, this volume explores: Essential stoichiometric, kinetic, and thermodynamic terms needed in the analysis of chemical reactors Homogeneous and heterogeneous reactors Residence time distributions and non-ideal flow conditions in industrial reactors Solutions of algebraic and ordinary differential equation systems Gas- and liquid-phase diffusion coefficients and gas-film coefficients Correlations for gas-liquid systems Solubilities of gases in liquids Guidelines for laboratory reactors and the estimation of kinetic parameters The authors pay special attention to the exact formulations and derivations of mass energy balances and their numerical solutions. Richly illustrated and containing exercises and solutions covering a number of processes, from oil refining to the development of specialty and fine chemicals, the text provides a clear understanding of chemical reactor analysis and design.
