Book excerpt: A dynamic adiabatic state equation was derived on the basis of the thermodynamics of irreversible processes for a partially ionized plasma with three components. The degree of ionization was taken as time-dependent with relaxation. A full set of magnetohydrodynamic equations was set up for such a plasma and solved after linearization. The dispersion relations obtained for timely and spatially homogeneous waves, which contain all possible wave types and are modified by appropriate members, contain terms for the mean degree of ionization, ionization energy, mean temperature, and relaxation time. If an external magnetic field lies in the direction of wave propagation, there is no effect on the longitudinal wave; however, a left-direction and a right-direction circularly polarized transverse wave forms.

The theory of the wave is briefly described and expressions are derived for the wave velocity, attenuation, field distributions, and the tube input impedance. Measurements are presented which verify the linear dependence of wave velocity on magnetic field and show fairly good agreement with theory for variation of mass density. The temperature of the plasma is determined experimentally by a direct resistivity measurement, and is found to agree well with the observed temperature derived from wave damping. The variation of attenuation constant with magnetic field is shown to be consistent with theory. Reflections of the waves occurring from insulating and conducting boundaries, and from a plasma-neutral gas interface are described. The radial magnetic field distributions are experimentally investigated and compared to theoretical predictions based on a modal analysis of the driving pulse. The effect in so far as this can be done with simplicity. The book describes how pulses are radiated from both small and large antennas embedded in a homogeneous magneto plasma. The power density radiated from a type of dipole antenna is studied as a function of direction of radiation in all bands of wave frequency. Input reactance is not treated, but the dependence of radiation resistance on wave frequency is described for the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Also described is the relation between beaming and guidance for Alfven waves.
