Book Synopsis The Seine River Basin by : Nicolas Flipo
Download or read book The Seine River Basin written by Nicolas Flipo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-30 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book reviews the water-agro-food and socio-eco-system of the Seine River basin (76,000 km2), and offers a historical perspective on the river’s long-term contamination. The Seine basin is inhabited by circa 17 million people and is impacted by intensive agricultural practices and industrial activities. These pressures have gradually affected its hydrological, chemical and ecological functioning, leading to a maximum chemical degradation between the 1960s and the 1990s. Over the last three decades, while major water-quality improvements have been observed, new issues (e.g. endocrine disruptors, microplastics) have also emerged. The state of the Seine River network, from the headwaters to estuary, is increasingly controlled by the balance between pressures and social responses. This socio-ecosystem provides a unique example of the functioning of a territory under heavy anthropogenic pressure during the Anthropocene era. The achievements made were possible due to the long-term PIREN Seine research program, established in 1989 and today part of the French socio-ecological research network “Zones Ateliers”, itself part of the international Long-term Socio-economic and Ecological Research Network (LTSER). Written by experts in the field, the book provides an introduction to the water budget and the territorial metabolism of the Seine basin, and studies the trajectories and impact of various pollutants in the Seine River. It offers insights into the ecological functioning, the integration of agricultural practices, the analysis of aquatic organic matter, and the evolution of fish assemblages in the Seine basin, and also presents research perspectives and approaches to improve the water quality of the Seine River. Given its scope, it will appeal to environmental managers, scientists and policymakers interested in the long-term contamination of the Seine River.
Book Synopsis History of Hydrogeology by : Nicholas Howden
Download or read book History of Hydrogeology written by Nicholas Howden and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-11-29 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lessons can be learnt from the past; from time to time it is useful for practitioners to look back over the historical developments of their science. Hydrogeology has developed from humble beginnings into the broad church of investigatory procedures which collectively form the modern-day hydrogeologist’s tool box. Hydrogeology remains a branch of the over-arching science of geology and today provides analysis of the sub-surface part of the water cycle within a holistic approach to problem solving. The History of Hydrogeology, is a first attempt to bring the story of the evolution of the science of hydrogeology together from a country- or region-specific viewpoint. It does not cover history to the present day, nor does it deal with all countries involved in groundwater studies, but rather takes the story for specific key countries up and until about the period 1975 to 1980. This is when hydrogeology was still evolving and developing, and in some areas doing so quite rapidly. The book has been written not only for practitioners of hydrogeology and hydrology but also for teachers and students to see the context of the evolution of the science around the globe. The History of Hydrogeology will also be of interest to science historians and all those interested in the role that individuals, institutes and nations have played over the years in defining modern day studies of groundwater.

Download or read book Hydrogeology written by Éric Gilli and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-09-14 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrogeology, the science of groundwater, requires a multidisciplinary approach involving many other sciences: surface hydrology, climatology, geology, geography, physics, chemistry, biology, and more. This book takes a broad view, considers water as a single entity, and presents many examples illustrating the variety of existing hydrogeological problems and the diverse scientific, technical, and social approaches used in resolving them. It is intended primarily for students of Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences, and Physical Geography. It will also be useful to all players involved in water-related issues: hydrogeologists, geologists, soil scientists, agronomists, civil engineers, and developers.
Book Synopsis The Chalk Aquifers of Northern Europe by : R.P. Farrell
Download or read book The Chalk Aquifers of Northern Europe written by R.P. Farrell and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2023-09-26 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cretaceous Chalk aquifers of Northern Europe underlie and support many sensitive ecosystems whilst at the same time being an important source of drinking water. Understanding, managing and protecting this valuable asset has always been a challenge and this volume brings together 25 papers representing current knowledge of the Chalk across a variety of thematic sections. The contributions look at aquifer properties, geology and karst; groundwater monitoring in the Chalk; groundwater management; groundwater-fed wetlands; engineering in the Chalk; heat and solute transport; diffuse pollution; and point source pollution. Geographically, the book includes studies undertaken in England, France, Belgium and Denmark. As well as academic papers, many of the chapters are practitioner focused and the editors hope that anyone working in Chalk groundwaters in Northern Europe, whether in academic, consultancy, water company or regulatory roles, will find this book an invaluable resource.

Book Synopsis Principles of Karst Hydrogeology by : Antonio Pulido-Bosch
Download or read book Principles of Karst Hydrogeology written by Antonio Pulido-Bosch and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the hydrogeology of karst systems, starting with the classifications from the applied point of view, and then the hydraulic parameters (porosity, permeability, and transmissivity). It also addresses the karstification process, its resulting forms, and their hydrogeological significance. Besides, the author describes possible models of karstic aquifers and their characterization. The book also explains the classical methods for analyzing hydrograms of karst springs and deepens the analysis of time series, as a preliminary phase to the mathematical simulation of karst aquifers. Finally, it introduces the hydrogeochemical characterization of karst, of the processes involved as well as the possible pollution and protection of karst aquifers. This book is intended to be of interest for professionals in hydrogeology as well as graduate and undergraduate students.
