Book excerpt: Two proglacial lakes, Rock Creek Lake and Grand River Lake, have been mapped in northeastern Ohio. These lakes existed in the Grand River valley, a low-lying area in Ashtabula and Trumbull counties. This study reexamined the extent of these late glacial lakes and determined their history. Several maps were analyzed to compare and contrast the mapped extent of the late-glacial lakes. Digital Elevations Models (DEM) and soil surveys were used to make updated maps of the study area. Terraces above the western arm of the Grand River were highlighted by DEMs to link the drainage of Grand River Lake to ancestors of Lake Erie. Water-well logs were examined to create cross sections across the Grand River valley to estimate the stratigraphy and thickness of lacustrine deposits. Two sediment cores were taken from the Grand River valley and textural, carbonate and clay mineralogy analyses were performed. A soils parent materials map created from soil surveys suggests that the extents of both Rock Creek Lake and Grand River Lake were smaller than previously mapped, as the distribution of lacustrine-derived soils differs from where the lakes had been mapped. Stratigraphy from water-well logs confirmed the presence of thick lacustrine deposits within the Grand River valley. The sediment cores were predominately clay and displayed similar carbonate contents to either the Hiram or Ashtabula tills found in the surrounding uplands. Rock Creek Lake possibly existed only as a small lake at 280 m (920 ft) or higher near the ice margin in the southern portion of the Grand River valley. The drainage outlet for Rock Creek Lake may have been through the Defiance Moraine along the modern course of the upper Grand River if a drainage divide at 290 m (950 ft) was crossed temporarily. Grand River Lake stabilized in the Grand River valley at 250 m (820 ft) and thick lacustrine deposits may have been deposited during its existence. A possible drainage outlet for Grand River Lake was westward along the Ashtabula Morainic Complex. The lake probably drained into an ancestor of Lake Erie older than the Whittlsey level because three levels of terraces were found above the western arm of the Grand River and may correlate to Lake Warren I, III and Lake Arkona. The possible drainage outlets for early phases of Grand River Lake when ice extended further south are problematic.

Book Synopsis Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences by : Wade H. Shafer
Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 32 (thesis year 1987) a total of 12,483 theses titles from 22 Canadian and 176 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 32 reports theses submitted in 1987, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.
