Book excerpt: The hydrodynamics and mass transfer characteristics of a concurrent downflow contactor (CDC) are studied in this work in order to investigate the viability of this bubble column as a catalytic reactor for the hydrogenation of?,?-unsaturated aldehydes. Oxygen/water was used as the system throughout. In order to obtain reproducible results, a very effective gas-liquid separation method was conceived and developed after much trial and error work. Shutdown and deadleg gas holdup measuring methods were compared and it was found that the shutdown method is more reliable than the deadleg method. The hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde using both in-house-prepared and commercial palladium, platinum and ruthenium catalysts was carried out in stirred tank reactors and cocurrent downflow reactors in order to study the kinetics and mass transfer characteristics and the selectivity towards the corresponding desired product, hydrocinnamaldehyde or cinnamyl alcohol. When palladium catalysts were used the desired product was hydrocinnamaldehyde. The effects of homogenous reactions, type of solvent, catalyst loading, temperature, pressure, reactant concentration and the effects of promoter or poison on the selectivity towards hydrocinnamaldehyde were investigated systematically. Aldehyde acetals were produced in polar solvents, but not in non-polar solvents. Two methods can be used to obtain hydrocinnamaldehyde selectivity without reduction of the carbonyl double bond: (1) by using non-polar solvents such as toluene; (2) by incorporating poisons or promoters into the reactant solution or onto the surface of the catalysts. 97% selectivity to hydrocinnamaldehyde was achieved. The effects of the solvent, temperature, pressure, catalyst loading, promoters, and reactants concentration on the kinetics were studied and the following reaction kinetics are proposed for the hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde over non-modified palladium/charcoal catalysts in propan-2-ol and in toluene: Ra = kC\(_{Cat}\)C\(_{H2}\)C\(0_{CAL}\) The apparent activation energy varies with themperature range in propan-2-ol and is 65\(\pm\)5 kJ.mol\({-1}\) in toluene.

Book excerpt: A mediator-assisted electrochemical pathway for reduction of alpha-methyl styrene to cumene is investigated. Ambient pressure and low temperature hydrogenation is carried out in an emulsion of the reactant, an organic solvent and water, to which a suitable surfactant is added. The mediator employed in the study hydrogenates alpha-methylstyrene via a chemical step on the solid catalyst while the former is regenerated electrochemically at the cathode. Alpha-methylstyrene was successfully hydrogenated to cumene using both catalytic transfer hydrogenation and mediator assisted electrochemical hydrogenation. Complete conversion was achieved at a mediator concentration of 0.5M and at an applied potential of -1.3V vs. SCE at 60°C. The influence of the applied current density, concentration and the type of electrode on the rate of hydrogenation is investigated. A mathematical model that takes into consideration the reaction chemistry is proposed and validated using the experimental data.

Book excerpt: A series of palladium catalysts with ca. 1 wt% palladium supported on mesoporous silica with different pore sizes (MCM-41, SBA-15, and MCF) were prepared by deposition of colloidal Pd nanoparticles (Pd/X_col) and Pd(II)acetate solution (Pd/X_imp). MCM-41 and SBA-15 showed the XRD characteristic peaks indicating highly ordered hexagonal pore structure while MCF consisted of spherical cell and frame structure with average pore size of 2.7, 3.9, and 7.8 nm, respectively. Sizes of the colloidal Pd nanoparticles were about 2.3 nm. The supports pore structure did not affect the Pd particle size of Pd/X_col catalysts. For the Pd/X_imp, the Pd particle size was increased with increasing pore diameter of the supports. However, the largest Pd particle size was obtained on Pd/SBA-15_imp since the Pd particles were formed in a long cylindrical shape similar to SBA-15. The Pd/SBA-15_col exhibited the best catalyst performance in the liquid-phase selective hydrogenation of phenylacetylene under mild conditions (40 degress celsius, H2 pressure = 1-5 bar, 30 min). The appropriated pore structure and pore size of SBA-15 could provide a better encapsulation of Pd particles so that high styrene selectivity was attained at complete conversion of phenylacetylene. All the Pd/X_col catalysts exhibited no change in the catalyst activities/selectivity during the recyclability test for four cycles while the Pd/X_imp showed an increase of catalyst activity and lower styrene selectivity in some cases.
