Book excerpt: In lively and engaging language, this book describes our dependence on freight transport and its vulnerability to diminishing supplies and high prices of oil. Ships, trucks, and trains are the backbone of civilization, hauling the goods that fulfill our every need and desire. Their powerful, highly-efficient diesel combustion engines are exquisitely fine-tuned to burn petroleum-based diesel fuel. These engines and the fuels that fire them have been among the most transformative yet disruptive technologies on the planet. Although this transportation revolution has allowed many of us to fill our homes with global goods even a past emperor would envy, our era of abundance, and the freight transport system in particular, is predicated on the affordability and high energy density of a single fuel, oil. This book explores alternatives to this finite resource including other liquid fuels, truck and locomotive batteries and utility-scale energy storage technology, and various forms of renewable electricity to support electrified transport. Transportation also must adapt to other challenges: Threats from climate change, financial busts, supply-chain failure, and transportation infrastructure decay. Robert Hirsch, who wrote the “Peaking of World Oil Production” report for the U.S. Department of Energy in 2005, said that planning for peak world production must start at least 10, if not 20 years ahead of time. What little planning exists focuses mainly on how to accommodate 30 percent more economic growth while averting climate change, ignoring the possibility that we are at, or near, the end of growth. Taken for granted, the modern transportation system will not endure forever. The time is now to take a realistic and critical look at the choices ahead, and how the future of transportation may unfold.

Book Synopsis The Comprehensive Repertory for the New Homeopathic Remedies by : Colin Griffith
Download or read book The Comprehensive Repertory for the New Homeopathic Remedies written by Colin Griffith and published by Watkins Media Limited. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After nearly a quarter of a century's proof and research into new homoeopathic medicines, the dozens of new remedies that have been developed by the meditation circle of Janice Micallef RSHom are now presented as a desktop reference guide for any homoeopath with an interest in expanding the horizons of their art. Colin Griffith, a member of the homeopathic 'proving circle' since its earliest days, has laid out the book in a user-friendly manner to facilitate an easy search for the most appropriate remedy for both familiar and unfamiliar rubrics of symptoms. The accompanying lists of comparable 'old' remedies ensure that practitioners will not be tempted to view the new remedies as exclusively remedial in cases that may seem to call for something unusual. There are explanatory essays on how to use the repertory, on the association of remedies with the seven chakras and the seven major miasms, and a glossary of remedy names in both English and Latin to conform to universal usage. Each new remedy is also given a characteristic essential 'thumb nail' sketch to act as an additional guide.

Download or read book Soul Power written by Guy McKanna and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A monumental work," says Dr. Valerie Hunt, former professor at Columbia University, University of Iowa and University California, Los Angeles, and author of Infinite Mind. For thousands of years, people have questioned how the human soul works and expresses spirituality. Now, for the first time there is an objective answer grounded in science that explains spiritual phenomena. Soul Power: Science, Spirituality and the Search for the Soul brings together recent advances in neurobiology, physics and psychology and reconciles them with ancient texts and religious scriptures in a revealing new study of the soul. This groundbreaking book is the most comprehensive account of the science involved in spirituality. It details how some scientists have been able to recreate spiritual experiences in people, regardless of their beliefs. Soul Power's examination of what our heightened spiritual senses perceive has been described as the best scientific evidence so far for the existence of God.
