Pump Contaminant Tolerance Verification written by OKLAHOMA STATE UNIV STILLWATER FLUID POWER RESEARCH CENTER. and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is generally agreed that contaminant wear is a major factor in the life and reliability of a hydraulic system. However, there is considerable evidence which suggests that proper component selection and maintenance can produce a significant reduction in the life cycle costs associated with such fluid systems. One of the primary costs related to the operation of a hydraulic system is premature failure, downtime, and unscheduled maintenance. One method of reducing these factors is through effective system diagnostics and prognosis. This section presents the results, interpretation, and conclusions relative to the effort associated with hydraulic system diagnostics. Specifically, the activity was directed toward the investigation and adaptation of Ferrographic fluid analysis for use with hydraulic systems. Laboratory tests were conducted to gain an appraisal of the capabilities and limitations of the technique and to determine the characteristic patterns of the water debris. The data and interpretation of these tests are presented. In addition, hydraulic system analysis was conducted to assess the ability of the Ferrographic method to pinpoint excessive wear situations. This section presents a detailed account of the project activities in the area of pump contaminant tolerance verification. A brief review of the progress made during the previous year is also given. Results of a number of extended life tests (from 22 to 1430 hours) are presented and comparisons are made to the calculated or predicted values. It is concluded that the contaminant wear prediction techniques are of sufficient accuracy to be routinely applied with confidence.

Book excerpt: This project is a continuation of previous acoustics studies conducted to determine if the vibration signature of hydraulic components could provide information concerning the operational health of the system. The concept of using internally produced noise to detect incipient failure is not new (the screwdriver-to-the-block trick used by automobile mechanics is a good example); however, the technique has been more of an art than a science, especially where hydraulic systems are concerned. This study advances the previous work by applying the concept to vane pumps into which specific known degradation has been introduced. The study showed that, by using case-mounted accelerometers, significant vibratory differences can be detected and associated with given conditions.

Book excerpt: This book covers the background theory of fluid power and indicates the range of concepts needed for a modern approach to condition monitoring and fault diagnosis. The theory is leavened by 15-years-worth of practical measurements by the author, working with major fluid power companies, and real industrial case studies. Heavily supported with examples drawn from real industrial plants – the methods in this book have been shown to work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hydraulic diagnostic and fault isolation test program investigated the feasibility of detecting and isolating a hydraulic failure in order to prevent loss of the entire system. Isolation valves were installed as a means of separating the subsystems from the main system. Various sensors were used to detect change in flow, temperature, pressure and reservoir level. The sensor information was fed to a microprocessor which compared the information to known parameters. In the event of failure detection, a signal was transmitted to the appropriate subsystem isolation valve which then shut off the subsystem from the main system.
