Download or read book Hydraulic Fracturing in the Karoo written by Jan Glazewski and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydraulic Fracturing in the Karoo: Critical Legal and Environmental Perspectives explores a broad-ranging set of questions related to proposed hydraulic fracturing or 'fracking' in the Karoo. The book is multidisciplinary, with contributors including natural scientists, social scientists, and academics from the humanities, all concerned with the ways in which scientific facts and debates about fracking have been framed and given meaning. work comprises four parts: Part 1 provides an international, legal, energy, economic, and revenue overview of the topic. Part 2 has a physio-geographic theme, with chapters on the interrelated aspects of water, geology, geo-hydrology, seismicity and biodiversity, as well as archaeological and palaeontological considerations. Part 3 focuses on public health, and sociological and humanities-related aspects, and Part 4 addresses the relevant laws, emphasising their implementation and the role of governance. The underlying theme of Hydraulic Fracturing in the Karoo: Critical Legal and Environmental Perspectives is one of caution. The book emphasises the need for collaboration between the natural and social sciences and the responsibilities of those charged with the implementation and governance of the fracking enterprise if South Africa hopes to effectively manage fracking at all.

Book Synopsis Groundwater in Fractured Bedrock Environments: Managing Catchment and Subsurface Resources by : U. Ofterdinger
Download or read book Groundwater in Fractured Bedrock Environments: Managing Catchment and Subsurface Resources written by U. Ofterdinger and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2019-07-19 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fractured bedrock aquifers have traditionally been regarded as low-productivity aquifers, with only limited relevance to regional groundwater resources. It is now being increasingly recognised that these complex bedrock aquifers can play an important role in catchment management and subsurface energy systems. At shallow to intermediate depth, fractured bedrock aquifers help to sustain surface water baseflows and groundwater dependent ecosystems, provide local groundwater supplies and impact on contaminant transfers on a catchment scale. At greater depths, understanding the properties and groundwater flow regimes of these complex aquifers can be crucial for the successful installation of subsurface energy and storage systems, such as deep geothermal or Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage systems and natural gas or CO2 storage facilities as well as the exploration of natural resources such as conventional/unconventional oil and gas. In many scenarios, a robust understanding of fractured bedrock aquifers is required to assess the nature and extent of connectivity between such engineered subsurface systems at depth and overlying receptors in the shallow subsurface.

Book Synopsis The Shale Dilemma by : Shanti Gamper-Rabindran
Download or read book The Shale Dilemma written by Shanti Gamper-Rabindran and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US shale boom and efforts by other countries to exploit their shale resources could reshape energy and environmental landscapes across the world. But how might those landscapes change? Will countries with significant physical reserves try to exploit them? Will they protect or harm local communities and the global climate? Will the benefits be shared or retained by powerful interests? And how will these decisions be made? The Shale Dilemma brings together experts working at the forefront of shale gas issues on four continents to explain how countries reach their decisions on shale development. Using a common analytical framework, the authors identify both local factors and transnational patterns in the decision-making process. Eight case studies reveal the trade-offs each country makes as it decides whether to pursue, delay, or block development. Those outcomes in turn reflect the nature of a country's political process and the power of interest groups on both sides of the issue. The contributors also ask whether the economic arguments made by the shale industry and its government supporters have overshadowed the concerns of local communities for information on the effects of shale operations, and for tax policies and regulations to ensure broad-based economic development and environmental protection. As an informative and even-handed account, The Shale Dilemma recommends practical steps to help countries reach better, more transparent, and more far-sighted decisions.

Download or read book The Karoo written by W. Richard J. Dean and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-06-24 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The succulent and Nama-karoo form part of the arid south-western zone of Africa, a vast region of rugged landscapes and low treeless vegetation. Studies of this unique biome have yielded fascinating insights into the ecology of its flora and fauna. This book, originally published in 1999, is the first to synthesise these studies, presenting information on biogeographic patterns and life processes, form and function of animals and plants, foraging ecology, landscape-level dynamics and anthropogenic influences. Detailed analyses of the factors distinguishing the biota of the Karoo from that of other temperate deserts are given and generalisations about semi-arid ecosystems challenged. The ideas expounded, the ecological principles reviewed, and the results presented are relevant to all those working in the extensive arid and semi-arid regions of the world.

Book Synopsis Water-Energy-Food Nexus by : P. Abdul Salam
Download or read book Water-Energy-Food Nexus written by P. Abdul Salam and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water, energy and food are key resources to sustain life, and are the fundamental to national, regional and global economies. These three resources are interlinked in multiple ways, and the term “nexus” captures the interconnections. The nexus has been discussed, debated, researched, and advocated widely but the focus is often on the pairings of “water-energy” or “water-food” or “energy-food”. To really benefit from the nexus approach in terms of resource use efficiency it is essential to understand, operationalize and practice the nexus of all three resources. As demand for these resources increases worldwide, using them sustainability is a critical concern for scientists and citizens, governments and policy makers. Volume highlights include: Contributions to the global debate on water-energy-food nexus Examples of the nexus approach in practice from different regions of the world Perspectives on the future of the nexus agenda Water-Energy-Food Nexus: Theories and Practices is a valuable resource for students, research scholars and professionals in academic institutions with strong interests in interdisciplinary research involving geography, earth science, environmental science, environmental management, sustainability science, international development, and ecological economics. The volume will also be useful for professionals, practitioners and consultants in /NGOs, government, and international agencies. Book Synopsis Community Innovations in Sustainable Land Management by : Maxwell Mudhara
Download or read book Community Innovations in Sustainable Land Management written by Maxwell Mudhara and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-23 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is increasingly recognized that land can be managed most sustainably through involving local communities. This book highlights the potential of a new methodology of uncovering and stimulating community initiatives in sustainable land management in Africa. Analyses of four contrasting African countries (Ghana, Morocco, South Africa and Uganda) show that as communities directly face the challenges of land degradation, they are likely to develop initiatives themselves in terms of sustainable land management. These initiatives (or ‘innovations’) may be more appropriate and sustainable than those emanating from research stations located far from the communities. The book describes the rationale of the approach used, the set of steps followed, how the project managed to engage the communities to understand the importance of the activities they were undertaking, and how they were stimulated to improve and extend their initiatives and innovativeness. Examples covered include soil fertility, community forestry, afforestation, water, invasive species and grazing land management. Central to the book is the way communities, and scientists, interacted between the four countries and learnt from each other. The book also shows how the initiatives were outscaled locally.
Book Synopsis Natural Fracture Systems at Cape Fold Belt and Karoo Basin Transition by : Zandile Dlamini
Download or read book Natural Fracture Systems at Cape Fold Belt and Karoo Basin Transition written by Zandile Dlamini and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joint connectivity increases permeability of rocks that would otherwise be low in permeability. Natural fractures or joints form in response to tensile stress and are characterised by an absence of shear stress. Dominantly joints are systematic and pervasive they are affected by stress mechanisms which can change overtime leading to the formation of joint systems or networks. A field study of the natural fracture systems and patterns at the Cape Fold Belt and Karoo Basin transition, South Africa, was undertaken to compare and determine dominant natural fracture orientations. In the field fracture azimuth and dip measurements of prominent joints were taken at different locations and from different rock types. Differences in fracture density, spacing, orientation and patterns were observed at different locations and with different rock types. The book is aimed at people who are interested in natural gas and structural controls on natural gas movement.
