Book excerpt: The current widely accepted "industry standard" pump test employs a Vickers V104C (or V105C) vane pump to assess the antiwear performance of hydraulic fluids. The two main versions of the test are documented as ASTM and IP methods. This pump test method, which was first developed in the 1960s, assesses only the steel-on-steel antiwear performance of hydraulic fluids, and this under constant speed, constant volume, and constant high pressure conditions. Constant conditions are not experienced in practical applications and it can be shown that hydraulic fluids which perform well at high pressure can fail to provide adequate antiwear performance at low pressure. Although other pump types may have different materials in contact, standard universally accepted procedures have not yet emerged to cover these. It can be shown that hydraulic fluids which have good steel-on-steel antiwear performance can have poor performance in steel-on-yellow-metal contacts. There is therefore a need for wear test procedures to be developed which cover the full range of operating conditions and material types found in practical applications. This paper will review experience gained in the author's laboratory, with different hydraulic fluid types, during the development of wear test procedures which more adequately cover the range of operating conditions and material contacts experienced in practical operating environments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The qualification of fluids for use in a hydraulic system has been a major concern to component manufacturers for several years. The primary issue in a hydraulic system is the compatibility of the fluid with the main pump in the system. There are several bench-type wear tests for the evaluation of fluids, however, most of these are not intended specifically for hydraulic fluids but were developed for lubrication fluids. Therefore, many engineers have relied upon the pump tests which were available in order to select the fluid to be used in their hydraulic system. The testing of a hydraulic pump to qualify a hydraulic fluid is very time consuming and expensive.

Book excerpt: Existing pump test procedures for determining the anti-wear properties of hydraulic fluids are expensive to undertake, have a long test duration and require a large quantity of test fluid. This paper describes a project to develop an alternative low cost bench screening procedure of short duration, requiring only a small quantity of test fluid and using simple reproducible test specimens. A high level of correlation is demonstrated between the new test method and existing vane pump test procedures for a range of hydraulic fluids including mineral oils and water-glycol fluids. The new test procedure is highly suited to the hydraulic fluid development process requiring only ten litres of fluid per test and a maximum total test duration of six hours.

This book covers a broad range of issues that are important to engineers concerned with the selection, application, and maintenance of hydraulic fluids used in industrial machinery. The author provides a comprehensive and ready reference to various hydraulic fluid properties, such as biodegradability and fire resistance, as well as relevant hydraulic fluid test procedures. Also discussed are re-refining, reclamation, and disposal issues pertaining to used hydraulic fluids. This book is unique in that it brings together material that is currently not available from a single source, in a concise and useful format. A handy and useful guide for younger as well as more experienced practicing hydraulics and plant engineers, in addition to engineers in fluid power transmission and the mechanical engineering industries.

Book excerpt: * Reviews the development of modern hydraulic fluids* Discusses the application and selection of hydraulic fluids through the investigation of their physical and chemical properties related to the operational requirements.* Offers guidance on suitable maintenance routinesSince the first use of water as a hydraulic medium in the late 18th century, hydraulics has become an indispensable discipline of engineering science. Enormous technological advances have been made in the intervening years, but this has not been reflected in the available literature on the numerous fluids involved. Based on 40 years of experience with Shell in Norway, this reference text brings together a comprehensive coverage of the behaviour and selection of hydraulic fluids. It includes a full analysis of recent advances in synthetic oils - media which will inevitably become more dominant as natural products become more scarce.Hydraulic Fluids provides an overview that both students and professionals involved with hydraulics, whether concerned with the mechanical components or system design or selection and maintenance of the fluids themselves, will refer to again and again as it provides relevant information on all the major hydraulic fluids in a single volume.

Hydraulic fluid performance specifications represent minimum requirements. International hydraulic fluid performance standards are being developed by ISO/TC28/SC4 committee as draft (ISO DIS 11158 "Specifications for Mineral Oil Hydraulic Fluids"). Performance specifications for non-mineral oil hydraulic fluids are also being developed.
