Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hepatic hydatidosis is a worldwide disease with a high socio-economic cost in endemic areas. Until recently, only professionals working in these areas treated hydatidosis patients, but now, due to migration and increasing intercontinental travel, any medical doctor may have to attend to patients with hydatid disease. Therefore, proper training in the diagnosis and treatment of these patients is necessary, not just in endemic areas which already have extensive experience in managing the disease, but also in institutions in countries like the United States where hydatidosis is still rare. In this book, we update all the epidemiological, radiological, clinical and therapeutic topics in liver hydatidosis. The chapters are written by a multidisciplinary group of physicians involved in treatment of the disease: microbiologists, gastroenterologists, internists, radiologists and surgeons. We conduct a complete review of all the treatment options in hydatidosis, including antiparasitic drugs, PAIR and surgery.

It is designed to serve as a succinct appropriate resource for neurosurgeons, spinal surgeons, radiologists, neurologists, microbiologists, researchers and infectious disease specialists with an interest in cranio-cerebral and vertebro-medullary infections especially encountered in neurosurgery and spinal surgery. This Atlas is designed to deliver more information in less space than traditional texts, allowing for quick review of the essential facts of this complex infectious topic through pictures. Pertinent imaging and laboratory information are combined with intraoperative photographs and illustrations to help readers visualize variable presentations and enhance their perioperative management. The comprehensive content of this richly-illustrated book covers different infectious diseases seen on neurosurgical and spinal practices. The Atlas is divided into five sections, after a general introduction, the second section focuses on infections of the brain and its coverings. The third section focuses on vertebromedullary infections. The fourth section includes infections following cranial and spinal surgery, and the fifth section provides a description of the most important specific pathogens and other particular conditions. The format makes it easily accessible and includes a definition of each infection and its epidemiology, main clinical presentations, imaging features and laboratory findings, treatment options, and prognosis information. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diagnosis and Treatment in Internal Medicine equips trainee doctors with the essential skills and core knowledge to establish a diagnosis reliably and quickly, before outlining the management of the clinical condition diagnosed. Organised into three sections, the first provides a vital overview, whilst the second focuses on common presentations and diagnoses. Uniquely, this new book shows readers how to turn symptoms into a list of diagnoses ordered by probability - a differential diagnosis. Experienced consultants who teach trainees every day demonstrate how to derive an ordered differential diagnosis, how to narrow this down to a single diagnosis and if not, how to live with diagnostic uncertainty. The final section provides a comprehensive account of the management of system-based syndromes and diseases. Highly-structured chapters emphasize how common conditions present, how to approach a diagnosis, and how to estimate prognosis, treatment and its effectiveness. An onus is placed on the development of crucial diagnostic skills and the ability to devise evidence-based management plans quickly and accurately, making this an ideal text for core medical trainees.

Book excerpt: The contents of this volume are based upon the proceedings of a Sympo sium entitled "Infectious Diseases of the Central Nervous System" held in Phoenix, Arizona, and sponsored by the Barrow Neurological Institute and Foundation during its Ninth Annual Symposium. The purpose of the Symposium was to bring together knowledgeable experts in this field to review information that is available and to enhance our knowledge of new developments in the field of infectious diseases in the central nervous system. Because the subject could not be covered in its entirety by this volume, we have placed particular emphasis on recent developments and new information. The volume includes a remarkably fresh and interesting discussion of viral diseases as they affect the nervous system, including conventional and unconventional virus agents, and in addition, discussions of path ophysiology and epidemiology and postinfectious diseases of the nervous system. A similar approach is taken to the treatment of bacterial infection. Discussions of pathophysiology are intertwined with discussions of diag nostic techniques, prevention techniques and treatment of bacterial in fections. Additional surgical problems are discussed regarding prevention and management of peri operative infection and brain abscess. Special consid eration was given to coccidioidomycosis which is prevalent in the western states; also, there is a discussion of parasitic infections. This volume will be of interest to neurologists and neurosurgeons and any physician dealing with infectious disease. RICHARD A. THOMPSON, M.D. JOHN R. GREEN, M.D.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cysticercosis, an infection caused by the cystic larvae of the pork tapeworm Taenia solium, is one of the most frequent parasitic infections of the human nervous system (neurocysticercosis). It is endemic in most of Latin America, the sub-Saharan Africa, and vast parts of Asia, including the Indian subcontinent. It has also been increasingly diagnosed in developed countries because of migration of people from endemic zones and exposure in travelers. The life cycle involves the development of the adult tapeworm in the human small intestine (after ingesting infected pork with cysts) and larval infection in pig tissues (after ingesting human stools containing the eggs of the tapeworm). Humans get infected by the fecal-oral route, most often from a direct contact with an asymptomatic Taenia carrier. Most common clinical presentations are seizures (particularly late-onset seizures), chronic headaches, and intracranial hypertension. However, cysticerci can locate anywhere in the human nervous system, thus potentially causing almost any neurological syndrome and making clinical diagnosis a difficult task. Neuroimaging is the main diagnostic tool, and specific serology confirms the diagnosis and helps to define the diagnosis when images are unclear. Factors such as location (extraparenchymal versus intraparenchymal), number, size and evolutive stage of the parasites determine the clinical manifestations, therapeutic approach, and prognosis. Management includes symptomatic drugs (analgesics, antiepileptic drugs, anti-inflammatory agents) and in many cases cysticidal drugs, either albendazole or praziquantel. In recent years, efforts have focused on transmission control and potential elimination in endemic regions.

Book excerpt: This book is designed to present a comprehensive and state-of the-art approach to the diagnosis and surgical management of parasitic diseases involving different organ systems, with emphasis on the gastrointestinal tract. It is divided into five parts that address the various etiologies, current diagnostic dilemmas and methods, as well as the key principles involved in their surgical management. The introduction presents the overall epidemiology and classification of parasitic diseases, followed by chapters that focus on different types of the most frequently encountered parasitic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract found in different parts of the world, with special attention given to the existing surgical debates regarding the use of minimally invasive procedures. The next part places special emphasis on hydatid disease by describing the current extent of this disease, changes in its management, and the most frequent complications and tips on how to avoid them. The following part discusses the surgical management of parasitic diseases affecting different organ systems, including the heart, the lungs, the brain and the urinary system. The final part presents the surgical dilemmas encountered in special situations, such as pregnancy, and the pediatric patient. The Surgical Management of Parasitic Diseases is an important and authoritative resource to surgeons of all specialties dealing with parasitic diseases
