Book Synopsis Staging Violence Against Women and Girls by : Isley Lynn
Download or read book Staging Violence Against Women and Girls written by Isley Lynn and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-03-09 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Staging Violence Against Women and Girls brings together three contemporary plays that denounce gendered violence, along with interviews with their creators and the practitioners who have staged them in different national contexts. Little Stitches (London, 2014): consisting of four short pieces by Isley Lynn, Raúl Quirós Molina, Bahar Brunton and Karis E. Halsall, this play presents Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) from the points of view of by-standers, anti-FGM/C activists, health professionals, women who perpetuate the practice and, finally, survivors. 'Kubra' (Sydney, 2016): written by Dacia Maraini, this short play features a young woman who was subjected to FGM/C as a child and now, years later, brings her case to court in a search for justice. A Trial for Rape (Rome, 2018): adapted for theatre by Renato Chiocca from the international award-winning 1979 documentary of the same name, this play reveals how judicial procedures and attitudes toward sexual violence tend to turn rape survivors from accusers into accused. In their interviews, the writers, directors and producers discuss their conception and production of the works collected in Staging Violence Against Women and Girls. The plays and their creators highlight the urgency of raising awareness of these forms of violence and giving voice to survivors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published posthumously on the occasion of America's centennial celebration, George Lippard's Washington and His Generals, &“1776&” compiles into a single volume his five popular books of Revolutionary-era historical fiction. The first book, &“The Battle-Day of Germantown,&” features Lippard's hometown and George Washington's intricate and ultimately overcomplicated assault on the British during the Philadelphia campaign of the American Revolution.&“The Wissahikon,&” the second book, depicts the defecting of a Tory to the rebel cause after witnessing General William Howe's failed attempt to bribe a pious George Washington following the British capture of Philadelphia. In &“Benedict Arnold,&” the infamous treachery of the treasonous Continental Army general is the subject. With &“The Battle of the Brandywine,&” Lippard recounts the American despair over the September 11, 1777, battle that drove back the Continental forces, leaving the capital in Philadelphia under British occupation. The collection ends with the fifth book, &“The Fourth of July, 1776,&” his imagined version of the day that inspired most of Lippard's patriotic writing. It includes the often quoted &"Speech of the Unknown&" given by an anonymous revolutionary, which in the book provided the final impetus for the delegates to sign the Declaration of Independence.

Download or read book Travelers written by Regent Jean Cabana and published by Turning Stone Press. This book was released on 2012-07-16 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Travelers: The Meaningful Journey, Régent Jean Cabana takes readers on a soul-affirming journey, making a strong case that the world outside, the one we travel into, responds to the world inside, the world we carry in our hearts and souls. Cabana draws on both old and new age wisdom to illustrate the unique qualities of each individual traveler, while at the same time exemplifying the universal appeal and symbolic strength of the figure of “Traveler” as portrayed throughout the ages. Travelers: The Meaningful Journey teaches us that our voyages can bring a special kind of wisdom when we are open to the possibilities, and it reminds us that home is within, not without. This is a book you will want to take with you wherever you go – whether it’s on a weekend pilgrimage or a month-long sojourn.
