Shin’s life has lost all meaning as he spends endless days patrolling his cruel master’s domain. When he catches a wolf spy, on reckless impulse, he lets her go. But then his master surprises him by allowing him to leave the forest for the first time in centuries, but in exchange for temporary freedom, he must recapture the spy and if he fails, he’ll be locked in solitude for eternity. A fate worse than death. While seeking missing priestesses, Akane met Shin, and their brief exchange awakens the wolf inside her. Ever since she lost control of it, she’s suppressed that side of her and tried to live as a human. She planned to bury it again, but Shin reappears, in disguise, tempting her wolf and her heart. Akane can’t risk losing control. If she does, she’ll endanger everyone she loves. Then kidnappers take her sister, and only Shin knows where. Caught in an uneasy alliance, they set out together. However, they find it impossible to deny their growing attraction. If Akane is willing to trust Shin, he can help her tame the raging beast inside her, but can love save Shin from eternal damnation or will he sacrifice himself to protect Akane?

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1978, this classic exploration of humanity’s complex relationship with and understanding of wolves returns with a new afterword by the author. Humankind's relationship with the wolf is the sum of a spectrum of responses ranging from fear to admiration and affection. Lopez’s classic, careful study has won praise from a wide range of reviewers and improved the way books on wild animals are written. Of Wolves and Men explores the uneasy interaction between wolves and civilization over the centuries, and the wolf's prominence in our thoughts about wild creatures. Drawing upon an impressive array of literature, history, science, and mythology as well as extensive personal experience with captive and free-ranging wolves, Lopez argues for the wolf's preservation and immerses the reader in its sensory world, creating a compelling portrait of the wolf both as a real animal and as imagined by different kinds of men. A scientist might perceive the wolf as defined by research data, while an Eskimo hunter sees a family provider much like himself. For many Native Americans the wolf is also a spiritual symbol, a respected animal that can strengthen the individual and the community. With irresistible charm and elegance, Of Wolves and Men celebrates careful scientific fieldwork, dispels folklore that has enabled the Western mind to demonize wolves, explains myths, and honors indigenous traditions, allowing us to understand how this remarkable animal has become so prominent for so long in the human heart.

When he finds work as Steward to a future king he feels all will be well...until the crippled Mage comes to court. Aila, spurned by Eyulf in his quest for Power, has quite happily made a new life for herself without him. When he returns, and tries to claim her once more as his betrothed, her fear of the potent magic he wields keeps her from confiding in the few people she feels she can trust. Book excerpt: The story is set in the recent present and it quickly becomes apparent that the story-teller Paul is subject to many of the same insecurities and confusions prevalent in society generally. He attends the funeral of his estranged mother where he meets one of her ex-colleagues an interesting older man: James. It is whilst staying in James's cottage in the far reaches of a Yorkshire moor that Paul meets and becomes associated with the small community who live together around the cottage in an isolated location called the Mount. Ostensibly there to complete his latest book (based on the life and works of Sir Walter Scott), Paul is soon distracted from his task becoming intrigued by the nearby characters and their uncommon beliefs and behaviour. Very soon he finds he is deeply attracted to his next door neighbour and despite his affair with her he feels shocked and surprised in equal measure by her apparent lack of moral restraint and the way she flouts convention. However, given his lack of experience with the opposite sex and the distortions of his childhood he has little with which to compare the emerging situation. It is only when the celebration associated with the Solstice takes place that he begins to comprehend the primitive context in which he finds himself and the possible implications By way of his mother's research, recently unearthed by James and through the friendship of a local notable landowner called Richard St. John Smith, a story emerges that began centuries ago concerning a band of gypsies and their relationship with Richard's ancestors. He discovers that the peculiar mix of conditions that prevailed also involved one of his own antecedents. Unfortunately a tragic occurrence cuts short his stay in the cottage, forces an end to his infatuation with his neighbour and abbreviates the possibility of his future research. Although Paul's is the voice of the book his frailties are increasingly apparent and may be seen to serve as a catalyst for many of his actions and the options he chooses.
