In addition to his promotion, he’s settled into a comfortable arrangement with his landlady and paramour, Maria Walsh. That is, until his newfound peace is chaotically uprooted when a series of violent attacks against women lead to an outbreak of panic and fear. Things on the homefront are about to change in an unexpected way. In London, Charles Stewart Parnell tirelessly pursues the Irish cause for Home Rule. While the British are eager to discredit the Irish parliamentary leader and quash the growing movement towards independence, Swallow’s conflicted loyalties pull him in different directions. As he continues his hunt for a terrifying killer, Swallow has no choice but to traverse this volatile political scene in A Hunt in Winter, Conor Brady’s thrilling third Joe Swallow mystery.

With help from her friend Julie, they retrace Sam’s steps, delve into his Inuit beliefs, and reconnect with their spiritual beliefs to uncover clues beyond material understanding. Both tragic and heartwarming, this twisting novel draws you into Bean's world as she struggles with grief, navigates high school dramas, and learns to open her heart in order to see the true nature of the people around her. Winter of the Wolf is about seeking the truth—no matter how painful—in order to see the full picture. In this novel, environmentalist and award-winning author, Martha Handler, brings together two important pieces of her life—the death of her best friend’s son and her work as president of the Wolf Conservation Center—to tell an empathetic and powerful story with undeniable messages.

Book excerpt: They left me for dead. Now I’m pretty sure I’d have been better off… I used to be the princess of Blackmoor. Rich, beautiful, engaged to be married to the heir. Dean Blackmoor was supposed to win the game, accept my hand in marriage, and rule this town with me. I was supposed to be the closest thing there is to a queen these days. Pampered. Adored. Untouchable. Instead Dean picked his pet over me. Threw me out and left me for dead. But I don’t remember any of that. Now, someone else says he’s had his eye on me. He says he’s been watching me. Following me. Wanting me. He says his name is Gabriel Martinez, but he’s no angel. He’s the lowest of the low, a man that the princess of Blackmoor would never have looked at, let alone touched. He’s a savage, a killer. And my stalker. He says he’s not going to let me go. And if I try to run away? He says he’ll hunt me down until I’m his again. Hunting Winter is the first in the Blackmoor Revenge trilogy, featuring Winter and Gabriel. This is a dark romance, and sensitive readers should be aware that there are no heroes or heroines in this story. This book contains material which may be difficult for some readers, and features characters that are damaged, and morally grey at best.

When one of her peers is murdered during a routine hunting trip, Embla must track down the killer while confronting a dark incident from her past. Twenty-eight-year-old Embla Nyström has been plagued by chronic nightmares and racing thoughts ever since she can remember. She has learned to channel most of her anxious energy into her position as Detective Inspector in the mobile unit in Gothenburg, Sweden, and into sports. A talented hunter and prizewinning Nordic welterweight, she is glad to be taking a vacation from her high-stress job to attend the annual moose hunt with her family and friends. But when Embla arrives at her uncle’s cabin in rural Dalsland, she sees an unfamiliar face has joined the group: Peter, enigmatic, attractive, and newly divorced. And she isn’t the only one to notice. One longtime member of the hunt doesn’t welcome the presence of an outsider and is quick to point out that with Peter, the group’s number reaches thirteen, a bad omen for the week. Sure enough, a string of unsettling incidents follow, culminating in the disappearance of two hunters. Embla takes charge of the search, and they soon find one of the missing men floating facedown in the nearby lake. With the help of local reinforcements, Embla delves into the dark pasts of her fellow hunters in search of a killer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North America's #1 big-game animal is the whitetail. Most hunters, however, are not successful in their quest for a big buck. Some of them set up their treestands in the wrong places, others simply move too fast and make too much noise when still-hunting or tracking. Whitetail Hunting is written to help put the odds in the hunter's favor every time he or she steps into the deer woods. In the section Understanding Whitetails, readers learn what habitats deer prefer, how they react to weather changes, where they feed, how they use their senses, and how they communicate with each other. Preparing for the Hunt explains what equipment and clothing hunters should buy regardless of whether they hunt with firearm or bow & arrow. Chapters in this section also discuss tips for scouting and locating whitetail hotspots before opening day. The latest information on Chronic Wasting Disease and other deer-specific ailments are discussed. Hunting Techniques shows readers how the experts stand-hunt, still-hunt, stalk or drive deer in different situations and habitats. Readers also learn when to rattle, how to place deer attractor scents, and where to find trophy bucks. Trailing wounded deer and field-dressing tips are also provided. Regional Differences explores the unique hunting strategies needed for specific terrains and weather conditions in the various major geographic regions of the US and Canada.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the nineteenth century, Theodore Roosevelt, T. S. Van Dyke, and other elite men began describing their big-game hunting as “manly sport with the rifle.” They also began writing about their experiences, publishing hundreds of narratives of hunting and adventure in the popular press (and creating a new literary genre in the process). But why did so many of these big-game hunters publish? What was writing actually doing for them, and what did it do for readers? In exploring these questions, The Hunter Elite reveals new connections among hunting narratives, publishing, and the American conservation movement. Beginning in the 1880s these prolific hunter-writers told readers that big-game hunting was a test of self-restraint and “manly virtues,” and that it was not about violence. They also opposed their sportsmanlike hunting to the slaughtering of game by British imperialists, even as they hunted across North America and throughout the British Empire. Their references to Americanism and manliness appealed to traditional values, but they used very modern publishing technologies to sell their stories, and by 1900 they were reaching hundreds of thousands of readers every month. When hunter-writers took up conservation as a cause, they used that reach to rally popular support for the national parks and for legislation that restricted hunting in the US, Canada, and Newfoundland. The Hunter Elite is the first book to explore both the international nature of American hunting during this period and the essential contributions of hunting narratives and the publishing industry to the North American conservation movement.
