Book excerpt: A Wyoming PI goes deep into a world of ranchers, rustlers and murder in a mystery thriller that "effectively combines lurking menace and laid-back charm” (Publishers Weekly). Retired homicide detective Arn Anderson can’t seem to stay retired. His latest case: catching a sheep rustler who’s been making overnight raids around Cheyenne, Wyoming. But the investigation suddenly turns serious when a local girl is strangled one Saturday night. The mysterious rustler must have been a witness—if not the killer. When a second victim is strangled the following Saturday night, a disturbing pattern emerges. So why can’t Arn convince the Cheyenne police that the killer may strike again? The closer he comes to catching the killer, the more he’s met with suspicion. And when his investigation collides with a desperate act of violence, he wonders whether he’s closing in on a killer…or walking straight into a deadly trap.

Book excerpt: In 1827 the Duke of Wellington – former Commander-in-Chief of the British Army and British Prime Minister – ordered the withdrawal of British soldiers from the island of Ceylon after years of bloody conflict there. English cargo vessels, including the unarmed English Quaker ship Morning Star, were despatched to sail to Colombo to repatriate wounded British soldiers and a cargo of sealed crates containing captured treasure. By January 1828 , Morning Star was anchored at Table Bay, Cape Town, before joining an armed British convoy of East Indiamen, heading north. Heavily-laden, she struggled to keep up with the ships ahead. The notorious pirate Benito de Soto was the master of a heavily-armed pirate ship, lying in wait off Ascension Island in the mid-Atlantic to pick-off stragglers from passing convoys. Morning Star was easily overhauled by the pirate and stopped with cannon fire. Her captain and officers were executed and the attackers fled to Spain with cargo stolen from the stricken ship. Later de Soto buried the treasure and travelled to British-ruled Gibraltar with forged identity documents to sell the spoils. The authorities, however, discovered his identity and he was arrested. Despite the absence of eye-witness evidence that he was the pirate captain, he was convicted of piracy before a British judge and jury and hanged at Gibraltar in early 1830. It is clear that proof of de Soto’s guilt in court was lacking, but astonishingly, when renovations were being carried out at de Soto’s former home village in Galicia, Spain, in 1926, much of the treasures he had plundered from Morning Star were found buried in the grounds there. Almost 100 years later, British justice administered in London and Gibraltar was vindicated

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2018 NATIONAL JEWISH BOOK AWARD BOOK OF THE YEAR In this dual autobiography, the Klarsfelds tell the dramatic story of fifty years devoted to bringing Nazis to justice For more than a century, Beate and Serge Klarsfeld have hunted, confronted, and exposed Nazi war criminals, tracking them down in places as far-flung as South America and the Middle East. It is they who uncovered the notorious torturer Klaus Barbie, known as “the Butcher of Lyon,” in Bolivia. It is they who outed Kurt Lischka as chief of the Gestapo in Paris, the man responsible for the largest deportation of French Jews. And it is they who, with the help of their son, Arno, brought the Vichy police chief Maurice Papon to justice. They were born on opposite sides of the Second World War. Beate’s father was in the Wehrmacht, while Serge’s father was deported to Auschwitz because he was a Jew. But when Serge and Beate met on the Paris metro, they instantly fell in love. They soon married and have since dedicated their lives to “hunting the truth”—both as world-famous Nazi hunters and as meticulous documenters of the fate of the innocent French Jewish children who were killed in the death camps. They have been jailed and targeted by letter bombs, and their car was even blown up. Yet nothing has daunted the Klarsfelds in their pursuit of justice. Beate made worldwide headlines at age twenty-nine by slapping the high-profile ex–Nazi propagandist Chancellor Kurt Georg Kiesinger and shouting “Nazi!” Serge intentionally provoked a neo-Nazi in a German beer hall by wearing an armband with a yellow star on it, so that the press would report on the assault. When Pope John Paul II met with Austria’s then-president, Kurt Waldheim, a former Wehrmacht officer in the Balkans suspected of war crimes, the Klarsfelds’ son, dressed as a Nazi officer, stood outside the Vatican. The Klarsfelds also dedicated themselves to defeating Jean-Marie Le Pen’s National Front and his daughter Marine Le Pen’s 2017 campaign for president in France. Brave, urgent, and buoyed by a remarkable love story, Hunting the Truth is not only the dramatic memoir of bringing Nazis to justice, it is also the inspiring story of an unrelenting battle against prejudice and hate.

Book excerpt: Rethinking the concepts of "witnessing" and "witness" is highly relevant to the study of war crimes, mass murder and genocide. Through multiple readings, the volume shows the meanings and functions of witnessing in a political and historical context marked by the emergence of multiculturalism. The ultimate goal is the exploration of divergent and intersectional positions of the witness and witnessing as both concrete and hermeneutical categories. As a result, the mechanisms of social, political, and psychological oppression, murder and genocide will become tangible and understandable with greater precision and finesse.

Summer is over and tensions are high between the boys as Huck falls deeper into depression, ignoring Arkin's own experience. After a fight, the boys plan a road trip to Colorado for mountain biking, camping, and to finally discuss their trauma. But Huck never appears to pick Arkin up. Worried about his best friend, Arkin calls the police and informs Holly. Two days later, Arkin is convinced Huck has been kidnapped, though he has no proof. Arkin and Lilia follow Huck's last steps, look for clues in his belongings, and find he has once again been obsessing over Coven Wood and even planning to return to the cursed, hidden town. But Huck never left. His car is still parked just outside a traveling carnival in town... Together, Arkin and Lilia investigate and slowly realize that more than the demon is hunting Huck and that whoever it is, wants to bring him torment and pain.
