Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered, "What foods did the Pilgrims eat at the first Thanksgiving feast?"Hunting for an authentic Thanksgiving--an adventurous, fascinating examination of America's quintessential holiday and the food surrounding it.History's greatest journey's often begin with a question. What's on the other side of the mountain? What's across the sea? What did the Pilgrims and Indians eat at the first Thanksgiving feast? Was it turkey, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie? Writer, journalist, and outdoor hobbyist Kiara Ashanti wondered what the truth was and decided to find out. America's First Feast is a narrative tale of Ashanti's journey as he tries to hunt, grow, and cook all the original foods eaten by the Pilgrims and Indians. But beyond that it is a story that lays out the many ways Thanksgiving has shaped American culture, family gatherings, and love.Ashanti takes us into mosquito infested woods, the swamps of Florida, and the flats of city gardening in his quest to get it right. Along the way he ropes a dozen friends into the project only to face obstacles to the goal when friends discover half the beloved foods of modern America were not on the menu--and balk at their absence. Ashanti's exuberance, and descriptive first person storytelling adroitly conveys the work, twist and turns in his quest to provide a perfect first feast for friends and family. Full of surprises, and humor America's First Feast is the perfect guide for anyone that enjoys hunting, gardening, or American food history. More than that it contains surprising lessons he learned about family, friends, and then things Americans should be thankful for every day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative history, Paige Raibmon examines the political ramifications of ideas about “real Indians.” Focusing on the Northwest Coast in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth, she describes how government officials, missionaries, anthropologists, reformers, settlers, and tourists developed definitions of Indian authenticity based on such binaries as Indian versus White, traditional versus modern, and uncivilized versus civilized. They recognized as authentic only those expressions of “Indianness” that conformed to their limited definitions and reflected their sense of colonial legitimacy and racial superiority. Raibmon shows that Whites and Aboriginals were collaborators—albeit unequal ones—in the politics of authenticity. Non-Aboriginal people employed definitions of Indian culture that limited Aboriginal claims to resources, land, and sovereignty, while Aboriginals utilized those same definitions to access the social, political, and economic means necessary for their survival under colonialism. Drawing on research in newspapers, magazines, agency and missionary records, memoirs, and diaries, Raibmon combines cultural and labor history. She looks at three historical episodes: the participation of a group of Kwakwaka’wakw from Vancouver in the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago; the work of migrant Aboriginal laborers in the hop fields of Puget Sound; and the legal efforts of Tlingit artist Rudolph Walton to have his mixed-race step-children admitted to the white public school in Sitka, Alaska. Together these episodes reveal the consequences of outsiders’ attempts to define authentic Aboriginal culture. Raibmon argues that Aboriginal culture is much more than the reproduction of rituals; it also lies in the means by which Aboriginal people generate new and meaningful ways of identifying their place in a changing modern environment.

Book excerpt: Nathan Raab, America’s preeminent rare documents dealer, delivers a “diverting account of treasure hunting in the fast lane” (The Wall Street Journal) that recounts his years as the Sherlock Holmes of historical artifacts, questing after precious finds and determining their authenticity. A box uncovered in a Maine attic with twenty letters written by Alexander Hamilton; a handheld address to Congress by President George Washington; a long-lost Gold Medal that belonged to an American President; a note that Winston Churchill wrote to his captor when he was a young POW in South Africa; paperwork signed and filled out by Amelia Earhart when she became the first woman to fly the Atlantic; an American flag carried to the moon and back by Neil Armstrong; an unpublished letter written by Albert Einstein, discussing his theory of relativity. Each day, people from all over the world contact Nathan Raab for help understanding what they have, what it might be worth, and how to sell it. The Raab Collection’s president, Nathan is a modern-day treasure hunter and one of the world’s most prominent dealers of historical artifacts. Most weeks, he travels the country, scours auctions, or fields phone calls and emails from people who think they may have found something of note in a grandparent’s attic. In The Hunt for History, “Raab takes us on a wild hunt and deliciously opens up numerous hidden crevices of history” (Jay Winik, author of April 1865)—spotting a letter from British officials that secured the Rosetta Stone; discovering a piece of the first electric cable laid by Edison; restoring a fragmented letter from Andrew Jackson that led to the infamous Trail of Tears; and locating copies of missing audio that had been recorded on Air Force One as the plane brought JFK’s body back to Washington. Whether it’s the first report of Napoleon’s death or an unpublished letter penned by Albert Einstein to a curious soldier, every document and artifact Raab uncovers comes with a spellbinding story—and often offers new insights into a life we thought we knew.
