Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hunters and Hunting, in the Arctic I considered an account of my first two expeditions to the Arctic regions worthy of publication, because each was interesting in its own way. Exceptionally favourable conditions attended the first, permitting us to cross the Greenland ice-belt at 76° latitude, a region up to that time deemed impassable, and to attain, in the the French Islands, never before reached even with sledges. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hunters of the Great North When first you leave home to travel in a foreign land you receive impressions more vivid than those of any later journey to the same country. If you at once rush your views and observations into print you are likely to have an interesting book but not so likely an accurate one. You will probably regret some parts of that book on grounds of mere regard for truth, for you will see later that you erred both in observations and conclusions. When first I went to the polar regions I came back at the end of a year and a half full of enthusiasm for the Arctic and for the Eskimos. Luckily that enthusiasm was translated into the organization of a second expedition that left for the North in seven months, and not into a book to be published then. As I look over my diaries of that time I shudder to think how vastly I might have augmented the already great misknowledge of the Arctic had I published everything I imagined I had seen and everything I thought I knew. At the end of my second expedition, after five winters and seven summers in the North, I published "My Life With the Eskimo" (New York and London, 1913). So far I have discovered (with the help of critics and through careful re-reading) a half dozen errors in that volume. Some of these have been eliminated as the book has been reprinted; the rest will be rectified in the next printing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nimrod in the North, or Hunting and Fishing Adventures in the Arctic Regions In writing of Nimrod in the North, the author has confined himself almost exclusively to such scenes and adventures as came Within his personal knowledge a few years since, in the region north of Hudson's Bay, and, more recently, in the interior of Alaska. He has sought at the same time, however, to describe in a general way the life Of the sportsman in the Polar wast-e -his trials and his triumphs, his cares and his comforts, his camps and his sledges, his singular native allies and their ingenious weapons Of the chase, and (above all) the animals he may pursue - or that may pursue him, - and in doing so has added a yery few interesting hunting anecdotes from the Arctic works of others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Walrus Hunters: A Romance of the Realms of Ice There is a river in America which flows to the north-westward of Great Bear Lake, and helps to drain that part of the great wilderness into the Arctic Sea. It is an insignificant stream compared with such well-known waterways as the Mackenzie and the, Coppermine; nevertheless it is large enough to entice the white whale and the seal into its waters every spring, and it becomes a resting place for myriads of wild-fowl while on their passage to and from the breeding-grounds of the Far North. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Still-Hunter That mystic tie, which binds in the one circle of enchantment all the varied scenes in which the rifle, rod, or gun play a part, must take the subject of this work of some interest to every lover of the field, whether he uses the rifle or not, and whether he ever expects to hunt large game or not. I have therefore endeavored to treat in in such a manner as to be at least readable to all such, as well as interesting to those who desire the information it contains. The part of rifles and rifle-shooting and on game may be interesting to all who love the sporting rifle. And, judging from the comments and letters in the leading papers upon field-sports at the time when I first wrote upon the use of the rifle in the field, even the experienced hunter may find a hint or two that may one day serve him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Hunter's and Sportsman's Manual and Trapper's Guide It is simply a volume of suggestions (not for the professional or skilled hunter) but for those of equal enthusiasm, but less experience; and as it is next to impossible for me to go deeply into the subject of hunting or trapping all kinds of game, in a volume of this size, the reader will I trust, par don its shortcomings in this respect, and accept quality in lieu of quantity, facts instead of stories of personal experiences.
