Download or read book The Rise of the Therapeutic State written by Andrew J. Polsky and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1993-07-26 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assuming that "marginal" citizens cannot govern their own lives, proponents of the therapeutic state urge casework intervention to reshape the attitudes and behaviors of those who live outside the social mainstream. Thus the victims of poverty, delinquency, family violence, and other problems are to be "normalized." But "normalize," to Andrew Polsky, is a term that "jars the ear, as well it should when we consider what this effort is all about." Here he investigates the broad network of public agencies that adopt the casework approach.

Book Synopsis American Modernism and Depression Documentary by : Jeff Allred
Download or read book American Modernism and Depression Documentary written by Jeff Allred and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-12-08 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photos filled with the forlorn faces of hungry and impoverished Americans that came to characterize the desolation of the Great Depression are among the best known artworks of the twentieth century. Captured by the camera's eye, these stark depictions of suffering became iconic markers of a formative period in U.S. history. Although there has been an ample amount of critical inquiry on Depression-era photographs, the bulk of scholarship treats them as isolated art objects. And yet they were often joined together with evocative writing in a genre that flourished amid the period, the documentary book. American Modernism and Depression Documentary looks at the tradition of the hybrid, verbal-visual texts that flourished during a time when U.S. citizens were becoming increasingly conscious of the life of a larger nation. Jeff Allred draws on a range of seminal works to illustrate the convergence of modernism and documentary, two forms often regarded as unrelated. Whereas critics routinely look to James Agee and Walker Evans' Let Us Now Praise Famous Men as the sole instance of the modernist documentary book, Allred turns to such works as Richard Wright's scathing 12 Million Black Voices, and the oft-neglected You Have Seen Their Faces by Erskine Caldwell and Margaret Bourke-White to open up the critical playing field. And rather than focusing on the ethos of Progressivism and/or the politics and aesthetics of the New Deal, Allred emphasizes the centrality of Life magazine to the consolidation of a novel cultural form.
Download or read book The Power of Maps written by Denis Wood and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume ventures into terrain where even the most sophisticated map fails to lead--through the mapmaker's bias. Denis Wood shows how maps are not impartial reference objects, but rather instruments of communication, persuasion, and power. Like paintings, they express a point of view. By connecting us to a reality that could not exist in the absence of maps--a world of property lines and voting rights, taxation districts and enterprise zones--they embody and project the interests of their creators. Sampling the scope of maps available today, illustrations include Peter Gould's AIDS map, Tom Van Sant's map of the earth, U.S. Geological Survey maps, and a child's drawing of the world. THE POWER OF MAPS was published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Cooper Hewitt Museum, the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Design.

Download or read book The Ten Year War written by Jonathan Cohn and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Cohn's The Ten Year War is the definitive account of the battle over Obamacare, based on interviews with sources who were in the room, from one of the nation's foremost healthcare journalists. The Affordable Care Act, better known as “Obamacare,” was the most sweeping and consequential piece of legislation of the last half century. It has touched nearly every American in one way or another, for better or worse, and become the defining political fight of our time. In The Ten Year War, veteran journalist Jonathan Cohn offers the compelling, authoritative history of how the law came to be, why it looks like it does, and what it’s meant for average Americans. Drawn from hundreds of hours of interviews, plus private diaries, emails and memos, The Ten Year War takes readers to Capitol Hill and to town hall meetings, inside the West Wing and, eventually, into Trump Tower, as the nation's most powerful leaders try to reconcile pragmatism and idealism, self-interest and the public good, and ultimately two very different visions for what the country should look like. At the heart of the book is the decades-old argument over what’s wrong with American health care and how to fix it. But the battle over healthcare was always about more than policy. The Ten Year War offers a deeper examination of how our governing institutions, the media and the two parties have evolved, and the dysfunction those changes have left in their wake.

Book Synopsis The Black Index by : Bridget R. Cooks
Download or read book The Black Index written by Bridget R. Cooks and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The artists featured in The Black Index--Dennis Delgado, Alicia Henry, Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle, Titus Kaphar, Whitfield Lovell, and Lava Thomas--build upon the tradition of Black self-representation as an antidote to colonialist images. Their translations of photography challenge the medium's long-assumed qualities of objectivity, legibility, and identification. Using drawing, sculpture, and digital technology to transform the recorded image, these artists question our reliance on photography as a privileged source for documentary objectivity and historical understanding. The works featured here offer an alternative practice--a Black index. In the hands of these six artists, the index still serves as a finding aid for information about Black subjects, but it also challenges viewers' desire for classification and, instead, redirects them toward alternative information.

Book Synopsis The Fix Is In by : J. A. Graffagnino
Download or read book The Fix Is In written by J. A. Graffagnino and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-07-20 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finally, the truth is revealed about Manhattan’s Deutsche Bank building fire. The devastating fire at 130 Liberty Street in the heart of Manhattan’s financial center — a short distance from what was the World Trade Center — was one of the worst fires in New York City’s history. Two firefighters were killed, and 105 were injured. One of the firefighters killed during the horrific fire was author Graffagnino’s son, Joey. Graffagnino refused to believe what high-level government decision makers were telling the public — that the fire was an accident. After eight years of relentless research in pursuit of the truth — combing through public records and interviewing firefighters on the scene, government officials, informed observers, whistleblowers and eyewitnesses — Graffagnino uncovered the truth. The horrific seven-alarm Deutsche Bank building fire was no accident. And all efforts to quell the raging inferno were in vain. The Fix Is In is not based upon a conspiracy theory, opinion or undocumented rumors, but confirmed facts. Graffagnino places blame where it belongs and exposes the people who benefited from the catastrophe. Find out for yourself. Discover the disturbing truth about a calculated and complex conspiracy involving top governmental agencies, corporate leaders and organized crime figures. “The Deutsche Bank fire was preventable,” said FDNY Captain Simon Ressner. “Preventive measures were deliberately sidestepped in the name of ambition and in the name of money.”

Book Synopsis Contemplating Dis/Ability in Schools and Society by : David J. Connor
Download or read book Contemplating Dis/Ability in Schools and Society written by David J. Connor and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-07-15 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book chronicles the professional life of a career-long, inclusive educator in New York City through eight different stages in special and general education. Developing a new approach to research as part of qualitative methodology, David J. Connor merges the academic genre of autoethnography with memoir to create a narrative that engages the reader through stories of personal experiences within the professional world that politicized him as an educator. After each chapter’s narrative, a systematic analytic commentary follows that focuses on: teaching and learning in schools and universities; the influence of educational laws; specific models of disability and how influence educators and educational researchers; and educational structures and systems—including their impact on social, political, and cultural experiences of people with disabilities. This autoethnographic memoir documents, over three decades, the relationship between special and general education, the growth of the inclusion movement, and the challenge of special education as a discrete academic field. As part of a national group of critical special educators, Connor describes the growth of counter-theory through the inception and subsequent growth of DSE as a viable academic field, and the importance of rethinking human differences in new ways.
