Book excerpt: The 2010 food crisis in the Sahel has affected millions of men, women and children. The humanitarian response, although too slow and insufficient, did at least allow the worst to be avoided. However, the root causes of food insecurity in the Sahel are structural. Breaking this vicious cycle requires a new approach. Collectively, we need to be better prepared in order to react more effectively to these recurring crises by tackling the root causes of this vulnerability and strengthening the resilience and increasing the revenues of affected communities. Development policies and programs, starting with agricultural and food policies, must take the risks of failed harvests into account, while responding to the specific needs of the most vulnerable communities, in particular women and children. The fight against hunger and malnutrition in the Sahel needs to be fought before, during and after crises.

Book excerpt: 'The book's radical message "save livelihoods not just lives" should be on the desk of every policy-maker concerned with relief and development and demands a rethink of policy and practice across the board.' - Robert Chambers, Institute of Development Studies 'A book on development I really enjoyed. An entriguing story emerges: the real expert on saving lives and livelihoods are the people facing famine and insecurity themselves. This book details the evolution of the local food monitoring system, showing that by concentrating on what people can do in response to change, rather than what they cannot do, we can devise more permanent and effective responses to food insecurity than emergency food aid distribution.' - Mike Aaronson, Save the Children Poor people living in high-risk environments live continuously with uncertainty which often threatens their livelihoods. They have therefore developed effective means of predicting and responding to large fluctuations in rainfall, harvest levels and natural resource production. These methods of prediction and response often out-perform conventional early warning systems promoted by donors and governments, and yet are rarely considered in the conception and implementation of food security programmes.

Book excerpt: The Sahel region is undoubtedly the most important part of Sub-Saharan Africa in terms of poverty and vulnerability of its population to food insecurity, which in turn is partly responsible for the growing problem of under-nutrition in this region. However, it is worth noting, that malnutrition and all its consequences are not always so much a lack of food as a lack of knowledge about food. To this end, nutrition-related programs and projects aimed at this region, should target not only food insecurity, but also "nutritional ignorance" throughout the dissemination of nutrition education. This book presents the Sahel region in all its nutrition-relevant aspects, from food supply throughout the nutritional status and health care of Sahelians. Based on the analysis of these aspects, the Author - a victim of vitamin A deficiency during the very early stages of his life - developed with emotion and passion two proposals of Food-Based Dietary Guidelines (FBDGs) for health promotion in this region of Sub-Saharan Africa.
