Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mr. Punch's Country Life: Humours of Our Rustics Than the compilation of such a series of books as that which includes the present volume there could surely be no more engaging occupation for one who delights to look on the humorous side of life. The editor feels that if his readers derive as much enjoyment from the result of his labours as these labours have afforded him he may reasonably congratulate them! He has found himself many times over, as a book has taken shape from his gatherings in the treasure house of Mr. Punch, saying "This is the best of the lot" - and usually he has been right. There is none but is "the best!" There may be one that is not quite so good as the other twenty-four; but wild horses would not drag the name of that one from the editor. He feels, however, that in illustrating the humours of country life Mr. Punch has risen to the very summit of his genius. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Humours and Conversations of the Town (1693) Such a book IS The H amours and C onversations of the T own which IS here presented in facsimile over two centuries and a half after its publication in 1693. The allusion hunters have rifled its con tents for Shakespeare and Spenser, but Dryden, Cowley, Butler, Nat Lee, Otway, Denham, and Etherege lie here reputation-wise in their pristine states. Here, too, are Jo Hams and charming Phyllis and Whittington and his cat as well as Mr Rymer and Mr Creech, abundant observa tions on the Royal Society and the New Science, and repeated mention of the London haunts of the beau monde and the demimonde. There is much talk of the theater, of London Wits and rakehells. Of coquetry and sin, and an extenswe contrast of urban life with rural life that eclipses Horace's Town Mouse and Country Mouse in convivial argument. Download or read book The Sparrowgrass Papers written by Frederic S. Cozzens and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sparrowgrass Papers: Or Living in the Country Gentle reader! Doubtless you have read, in the work of a quaint old commentator whose name has been quietly obscuring itself in the rust of nearly three centuries, these words -"It hath beene the custome of many men to make their introductions to their bookes, like to some Grecian Cities gates; so ample, that (as the Prouerbe ranne), their Citic was ready to steale thorow the same." You and I who appreciate wisdom - especially if it be a little mouldy, at once recognized the value of the hint, conveyed by that piece of antiquated orthography. Therefore, to you, the brevity of this preface will, I trust, commend the book quite as much as though I had taken the matter in hand through the length and breadth of a score of pages. As there is nothing in it worth a smooth-faced prologue, nothing that would be the better for an apology, and nothing worth reviewing seriously, may I beg leave to present it without any introduction, except the very excellent designs of Mr. Dailey? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from God's Country and the Woman Philip Weyman's buoyancy of heart was in face of the fact that he had but recently looked upon Radisson's unpleasant death, and that he was still in a country where the water flowed north. He laughed and he sang. His heart bubbled over with cheer. He talked to himself frankly and without embarrassment, asked himself questions, answered them, discussed the beauties of nature and the possibilities of storm as if there were three or four of him instead of one. At the top end of the world a man becomes a multiple being - if he is white. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of a Country Doctor And last and best of all, dear reader, I desired to make something out of the enter prise. If I do there will be rejoicing at our house when the receipts come in. There will be a feast in which the timbrel and the hewgag will be sounded, and I promise you that the widow and the orphan shall not be forgotten. Complaint may be made that the per sonal pronoun I has been used Oftener than it should have been. This may be true. My friends say that I have a plenty Of that very necessary faculty called self esteem. TO this I also plead guilty and put myself upon the country. AS a defense, however, I desire to say that most Of the things written about in this book have a personal relationship to myself, and, being too modest to put myself on an equality with the editors and the Lord, by saying we I was compelled to say I; so the 'i's' seem to have it. Mind, I don't want none of your flattering butter, a-talking about my wirtues, and as to your a-sayin' as people likes me, that's fall very well, but why ever shouldn't they, as never did them no 'arm, nor wouldn't hurt a fly was it ever so? Only, whatever you say, don't ge about a-statin' as isn't true, for I never had a con sumption, as you meant for to hawk me about onbook-stalls, tho' I'm sure there's a many I could give ideas to in welcome, as don't seem to have none in their own heads; tho' Iwill say as book-learnin' don't do much good, except to them as has their senses about 'em, and then books isn't necessary; but parties 'as often told me as I spoke like a book, as I'm sure any one is welcome for to hear. So no more at present, thro' mr. Giddens, as I've got to write it, being obligated for to go, and I 'turns him many thanks thro' 'aving took that pains over it, and remains, yours respectful.
