It has been said that the most significant mark of a growing, maturing Christian is the increase of humility in a person's life. Yet, Andrew Murray's words of over a century ago are still true: it is amazing "how little humility is sought after as the distinguishing feature of the discipleship of Jesus."This classic work explores and illuminates "the cardinal virtue, the only root from which the graces can grow, the one indispensable condition of true fellowship with Jesus" so that we may be "clothed...with the very beauty and blessedness of heaven and of Jesus." The Christian Classic in Easy-Read Layout edition of Andrew Murray's Humility features a number of improvements on existing public domain editions of the book including: Archaic vocabulary replaced by contemporary equivalents; The English Standard Version (ESV) translation of the Bible inserted for biblical quotes; Interior layout and typography designed for ease of reading and mark-up; All of which combine for a more accessible and readable text of this Christian classic than ever before.
Book Synopsis Paul on Humility by : Eve-Marie Becker
Download or read book Paul on Humility written by Eve-Marie Becker and published by . This book was released on 2020-08 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translated from German into English for the first time, this monograph seeks to reclaim the original sense of humility as an ethical mindset that is of community-building value. This exploration of humility begins with a consideration of how the concept plays into current cultural crises before considering its linguistic and philosophical history in Western culture. In turning to the roots of Christian humility, Eve-Marie Becker focuses on Philippians 2, a passage in which Paul appeals to the lowliness of Christ to encourage his fellow Christians to persevere. She shows that humility both formed the basis of the ethic Paul instilled in Christ-believing communities and acted as a mimetic device centered on Jesus' example that was molded into the earliest Christian identity and community.
Book Synopsis The New Testament and Intellectual Humility by : Grant Macaskill
Download or read book The New Testament and Intellectual Humility written by Grant Macaskill and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-03 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines how the New Testament scriptures might form and foster intellectual humility within Christian communities. It is informed by recent interdisciplinary interest in intellectual humility, and concerned to appreciate the distinctive representations of the virtue offered by the New Testament writers on their own terms. It argues that the intellectual virtue is cast as a particular expression of the broader Christian virtue of humility, something which itself proceeds from the believer's union with Christ, through which personal identity is reconstituted by the operation of the Holy Spirit. This demands that we speak of 'virtue' in ways determined by the acting presence of Jesus Christ that overcomes sin and evil in human lives and in the world. The Christian account of the intellectual virtue of humility is framed by this conflict, as the minds of believers who live together within the Christian community struggle with natural arrogance and selfishness, and come to share in the mind of Christ. The new identity that emerges creates a fresh openness to truth, as the capacity of the sinful mind to distort truth is exposed and challenged. This affects not just knowledge and perception, but also volition: for these ancient writers, a humble mind makes good decisions that reflect judgements decisively shaped by the sacrificial love of Jesus Christ. By presenting 'humility of mind' as a characteristic of the One who is worshipped—Jesus Christ—the New Testament writers insist that we acknowledge the virtue not just as an admission of human deficiency or limitation, but as a positive affirmation of our rightful place within the divine economy.

Book excerpt: Humility, or holding power loosely for the sake of others, is sorely lacking in today’s world. Without it, many people fail to develop their true leadership potential and miss out on genuine fulfillment in their lives and their relationships. Humilitas: A Lost Key to Life, Love, and Leadership shows how the virtue of humility can turn your strengths into true greatness in all areas of life. Through the lessons of history, business, and the social sciences, author John Dickson shows that humility is not low self-esteem, groveling, or losing our distinct gifts. Instead, humility both recognizes our inherent worth and seeks to use whatever power we have at our disposal on behalf of others. Some of the world’s most inspiring and influential players have been people of immense humility. The more we learn about humility, the more we understand how essential it is to a satisfying career and personal life. By embracing this virtue, we will transform for good the unique contributions we each make to the world.
