Book excerpt: Pride, or the loss of this humility, is the root of every sin and evil. It was when the now fallen angels began to look upon themselves with self-complacency that they were led to disobedience, and were cast down from the light of heaven into outer darkness. Even so it was, when the serpent breathed the poison of his pride, the desire to be as God, into the hearts of our first parents, that they too fell from their high estate into all the wretchedness in which man is now sunk. In heaven and earth, pride, self-exaltation, is the gate and the birth, and the curse, of hell

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Humility is the displacement of self by the enthronement of God." It has been said that the most significant mark of a growing, maturing Christian is the increase of humility in a person's life. Yet, Andrew Murray's words of over a century ago are still true: it is amazing "how little humility is sought after as the distinguishing feature of the discipleship of Jesus."This classic work explores and illuminates "the cardinal virtue, the only root from which the graces can grow, the one indispensable condition of true fellowship with Jesus" so that we may be "clothed...with the very beauty and blessedness of heaven and of Jesus." The Christian Classic in Easy-Read Layout edition of Andrew Murray's Humility features a number of improvements on existing public domain editions of the book including: Archaic vocabulary replaced by contemporary equivalents; The English Standard Version (ESV) translation of the Bible inserted for biblical quotes; Interior layout and typography designed for ease of reading and mark-up; All of which combine for a more accessible and readable text of this Christian classic than ever before.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all admire humility when we see it. But how do we practice it? How does humility--the foundational virtue of the normal Christian life--become a normal part of our everyday lives? Jerry Bridges sees in the Beatitudes a series of blessings from Jesus, a pattern for humility in action. Starting with poverty in spirit--an acknowledgment that in and of ourselves we are incapable of living holy lives pleasing to God--and proceeding through our mourning over personal sin, our hunger and thirst for righteousness, our experience of persecutions large and small, and more, we discover that humility is itself a blessing: At every turn, God is present to us, giving grace to the humble and lifting us up to blessing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a century countless readers have found in Andrew Murray a trustworthy guide to the deeper Christian life. As a pastor, evangelist, educator, and writer driven by concern for the spiritual guidance of new converts--and for revival in long-time believers--Murray penned some of the most enduring devotional classics of Christian literature. Though he ministered in a deeply-divided nation, his vision seemed blind to race, class, or political persuasion. And from a remote corner of South Africa, his preaching, teaching, and writing would eventually fuel spiritual awakening with a worldwide impact. This edition pairs Humility and Absolute Surrender in one volume. Together these classics reflect Murray's longing for a closer walk with Christ, and call us to a life of holiness and virtue, empowered not by our own strength but by the indwelling Holy Spirit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This annotated edition of Humility by Andrew Murray contains, as an appendix, an extensive biography of the author, which offers: -Many details of his life and career which impacted the writing of this book-The story of how his illness and the loss of his voice (for some time) affected his ministry, and-Other fascination facts that made Andrew Murray, and his ministry, so powerful and unique.Humility is the most overlooked teaching of Jesus Christ. Sadly, it's also a virtue that's been largely lost in contemporary culture-with its rampant fixations on self-promotion, selfies, self-promotion, and celebrity. Successful pastors have even transformed into "rock stars," more adept at self-promotion and accumulation of earthly riches than in leading their congregations to true spiritual wealth. In the midst of this self-inflated fray, the time-honored words of Andrew Murray still ring powerfully true. As Murray contends, most do not take this virtue seriously enough, nor understand the incredible ramifications of its lack upon their genuine holiness. The first step in humility is to realize our place as a created being before the Creator. A continual and intentional reminding of who we are and our need for God is our first duty as Christians. "Pride, or the loss of this humility, is the root of every sin and evil." The life and teachings of Jesus provide us with much instruction about the importance of humility: "Jesus came to bring humility back to earth, to make us sharers in it, and by it, to save us. In heaven, He humbled Himself to become man. The humility we see in Him possessed Him in heaven; it brought Him, and He brought it, from there."Humility is the root of all of the graces of the Christian life, and pride the opposite: "Without humility, there is no faith, love, joy, or strength demonstrated in our lives. Humility is the only soil in which the graces take root; the lack of humility is the reasonable explanation for every defect and failure in the Christian life." Thought by many to be the best book ever written on the subject of humility, this book should be carefully-and prayerfully-read.

Book excerpt: Cardinal Vaughn wrote these reflections over a century ago, and they are as pertinent today as when they were first assembled into a book. "There is no Saint however holy and innocent who may not truly consider himself the greatest sinner in the world. It is enough that he knows himself to be man to recognize that he is liable to commit all the evil of which man is capable." This thought alone will inspire us to humility and this book is a great aid to true humility, which is essential to salvation. St. Alphonsus writes: "a single bad book will be sufficient to cause the destruction of a monastery." Pope Pius XII wrote in 1947 at the beatification of Blessed Maria Goretti: "There rises to Our lips the cry of the Saviour: 'Woe to the world because of scandals!' (Matthew 18:7). Woe to those who consciously and deliberately spread corruption-in novels, newspapers, magazines, theaters, films, in a world of immodesty!" We at St. Pius X Press are calling for a crusade of good books. We want to restore 1,000 old Catholic books to the market. We ask for your assistance and prayers. Book excerpt: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” —1 Peter 5:5 A battle rages within every one of us every day. It’s the clash between our sense of stubborn self-sufficiency and God’s call to recognize that we’re really nothing without Him. It’s pride versus humility. And it’s a fight we can’t win without looking repeatedly to Christ and the cross. C. J. Mahaney raises a battle cry to daily, diligently, and deliberately weaken our greatest enemy (pride) and cultivate our greatest friend (humility). His thorough examination clarifies misconceptions, revealing the truth about why God detests pride and turns His active attention to the humble. Because pride is never passive, defeating it demands an intentional attack. The blessing that follows is God’s abundant favor. “This is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit.” —Isaiah 66:2, ESV God clearly states that He is drawn to the humble. He’s also clear that He opposes the proud. These two, humility and pride, cannot coexist. Where one is fostered, the other is defeated. Which will you pursue? When you acknowledge the deception of pride and intentionally humble yourself, you become free to savor abundant mercies and unlikely graces. You will find a new life is yours—a life God richly favors. A God-glorifying life you don’t want to miss.

Book excerpt: HUMILITY: The Beauty of Holiness contains 12 studies on humility, a quality that Andrew Murray rightly believes should be one of the distinguishing characteristics of the discipleship of Christ. Jesus not only strongly impressed His disciples with the need for humility but was in Himself its supreme example. He described Himself as "meek and lowly (tapeinos) in heart." (Matt. 11:29) The first of the Beatitudes was to "the poor in spirit" (humbly aware of spiritual needs Matt. 5:3), and it was "the meek" who should "inherit the earth." Humility is the way to true greatness: he who should "humble himself as this little child" should be "the greatest in the kingdom of heaven." "Whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled, and whosoever shall humble himself shall be exalted." (Matt. 18:4;23:12; Lu 14:11; 18:14). To the humble mind, truth is revealed. (Matt. 11:25; Lu 10:21) Jesus set a touching example of humility in His washing His disciples' feet. (Joh 13:1-17) The apostle Paul makes an earnest appeal to Christians (Php 2:1-11) that they should cherish and manifest the Spirit of their Lord's humility, "in lowliness of mind each counting other better than himself," and mentions the supreme example of the self-emptying (kenosis) of Christ: "Have this mind in you, which was also in Christ Jesus."-Philippians 2:7.
