Almost like a rags to riches life story. Not riches in monetary values or materialistic achievements but more personal goals achieved throughout my life. In the same breath we thank my Creator for all the things in life given to us free of charge eg. the air that we breath, our sight, our hearing, our taste, our smell and many more. Our parents struggled in life to rear us and give us everything a child could ask for. We had no wealth or inheritance but are always thankful to our parents who instilled in us love, passion, the ability to help others and to be good to our neighbours and the elders. As a child I always had the energy and goal to achieve high expectations, reaching for the ultimate peak in society. Sport was my passion. I excelled in athletics being the fastest sprinter in my time, in my age group and in my province. I was also a successful professional soccer player. Toured South Africa, played against top soccer teams in my country of birth and rubbed shoulders against some of the world's greatest soccer legends. I was very successful in the Retail world in Johannesburg, South Africa where many employees reported to me directly or indirectly. Retail was my life for over 30 years and I was employed by Woolworths. I married the most beautiful loving mother of my three children. Life had many ups and downs but we achieved many goals together. We enjoyed a short 22 years marriage until the day arrived when the Almighty took her away from us. After her passing we immigrated to Australia starting a new life in a new country. Australia to us was the best move. We can plan but the Almighty plans better. We opened our own business which lasted for over 20 years until retirement. I am thankful to my parents, my siblings, my children, friends and family and above all, my Creator. I hope that whoever reads my story will be inspired, motivated and achieve the highest level in life, Who knows, maybe a movie producer will pick up my story one day and transfer it on the big screen. God willing. In Shaa Allah.

Book excerpt: In his classic book, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, Patrick Lencioni laid out a groundbreaking approach for tackling the perilous group behaviors that destroy teamwork. Here he turns his focus to the individual, revealing the three indispensable virtues of an ideal team player. In The Ideal Team Player, Lencioni tells the story of Jeff Shanley, a leader desperate to save his uncle’s company by restoring its cultural commitment to teamwork. Jeff must crack the code on the virtues that real team players possess, and then build a culture of hiring and development around those virtues. Beyond the fable, Lencioni presents a practical framework and actionable tools for identifying, hiring, and developing ideal team players. Whether you’re a leader trying to create a culture around teamwork, a staffing professional looking to hire real team players, or a team player wanting to improve yourself, this book will prove to be as useful as it is compelling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past century or so, theatre has undergone a sea change, both in terms of its presentation and the manner in which it is consumed by the audience. The art form itself has evolved and transformed to be in sync with contemporary expectations. With March 27 set to be observed as World Theatre Day, our Cover Story chronicles the history and evolution of theatre in Odisha and comes up with some fascinating insights. Eco-friendly has become quite the buzzword over the past decade or so. Odisha has been doing its bit through the Eco Retreat initiative to promote sustainable tourism while showcasing the state’s rich cultural heritage and impressive natural beauty. Read all about it in City Lights. We also feature One M Crew, an acrobatic dance group from the slums of Mancheswar in Bhubaneswar that recently won a national competition. Their rise and rise is an inspiring story of grit and determination. Humans have evolved; so has technology, particularly when it comes to leveraging it for communication. ChatGPT is the latest example, having taken the Internet by storm. City Tech breaks down the phenomenon and explains what it is all about and what this development portends for the future. The Padma awards are India’s highest civilian honour. The past few years have seen a conscious attempt to make it a ‘People’s Padma’, with a clear emphasis on the work done by individuals at the grass-roots level. The list of 106 Padma awardees announced for 2023 includes four from Odisha. In CityZen, we salute the spirit and the accomplishments of these Padma Shri awardees. While Bhubaneswar has seen a lot of development in recent years, it has continued to grapple with one of urbanisation’s toughest challenges – cleanliness and waste management. Things are, however, set to change with the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation deciding to take this challenge head-on. In City Beat, we take a look at how BMC is trying to make the state capital the cleanest city in India. The law and the legal institutions not only need to keep pace with the changing world, they also have to be accessible to all. This is particularly true when it comes to women, including those who find themselves on the wrong side of the digital divide in an era where information is essential for empowerment. A special feature in City Affairs digs deep into the subject of law and gender and tries to figure out the way ahead.

Coach Don Showalter's rise to international recognition as a coach can be traced to his time at the helm of USA Basketball's Junior National Team, where he went 62-0 and brought home 10 gold medals. Yet, for all his international success he remains grounded in the Midwestern values that shaped his character; principles have made him a passionate ambassador for the sport of basketball and one of its great teachers. Cornfields to Gold Medals is an all-American story that takes the reader on Showalter's life journey through the sport he has coached for nearly half a century. It begins humbly, on a family farm perched atop the rolling hills of southeastern Iowa, and extends to gymnasiums in every corner of the world. Interspersed in this compelling personal narrative are 10 lessons in leadership, strategies Showalter employed throughout his 44-years coaching young athletes. Each is accompanied by key points in how to teach the lesson, and shares effective strategies for readers to implement in daily practice. Rooted in heartland principles of community, hard work, and service, this essential book offers leaders insight into guiding others and time to reflect on what is truly important.
