Although many studies have analyzed the gender gap in primary and secondary education in developing countries, this study is one of the few that analyzes the gap at the tertiary, or university level. The authors track the patterns in women's access to and achievement in higher education, including student enrollment and access to faculty and administrative positions. The study also identifies successful strategies and measures for reducing the gender gap. Two issues are examined in this paper. Part I reviews how women have fared in the wake of expanded tertiary enrollments over the past three decades. Despite evidence proving the importance of women's access to higher education for economic growth, a pervasive gap remains, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. The second part examines the World Bank's experience in projects designed to improve women's experience in higher education. The extent and severity of constraints varied across regions. Results are limited and many projects are still in progress. The findings suggest that countries with low per capita income levels and difficult social settings for women may have the greatest barriers to female participation. Even where social constraints are less severe, the programs for improving female education must respond to the demands of the labor market.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of Human Resource Development has developed largely through academics, scholars and reflective practitioners from across the world coming together. Many people link memorable keynote speeches to changes in their research, practice, career path or even life view. Good keynote speeches are a forthright statement of the expert’s view and thus are often not published. Now that HRD is maturing there is a need to recapture some of those earlier moments – both as a form of archive, and also to shed light on the path that has been followed. Twenty-two speeches seminal to the field of HRD are included in this volume. These speeches are milestones along the path of the development of the field; as well as reconstructing their speech, the contributors have also located it within the time it was given and commented on how the field has developed since. This book is a resource, not only as an archive and for those who wish to relive their pivotal moments, but also for anyone interested in the development of HRD as a discipline. This unique approach provides an exciting and engaging way to reflect on cutting edge issues in the academic and practitioner world of HRD!

This volume of the journal - volume four, number one - contains thirteen articulate essays on topical issues in Africa/African studies written by contemporary African scholars from diverse disciplines - Philosophy, Religion, Linguistics, Theater/Media Studies, Oceanography, Political Science, and Education. Some of the topical issues addressed are: the nature of metaphysics in Integrative Humanism (a contemporary school of African philosophy), development of viable systems of logic in African philosophy, rural education, social change, advertising and media exchange, "Boko Haram"-terrorism in Nigeria, sustainable development and climate change. The essays are informative, engaging and comprehensible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a long time, economic research on Africa was not seen as a profitable venture intellectually or professionally-few researchers in top-ranked institutions around the world chose to become experts in the field. This was understandable: the reputation of Africa-centered economic research was not enhanced by the well-known limitations of economic data across the continent. Moreover, development economics itself was not always fashionable, and the broader discipline of economics has had its ups and downs, and has been undergoing a major identity crisis because it failed to predict the Great Recession. Times have changed: many leading researchers-including a few Nobel laureates-have taken the subject of Africa and economics seriously enough to devote their expertise and creativity to it. They have been amply rewarded: the richness, complexities, and subtleties of African societies, civilizations, rationalities, and ways of living, have helped renew the humanities and the social sciences-and economics in particular-to the point that the continent has become the next major intellectual frontier to researchers from around the world. In collecting some of the most authoritative statements about the science of economics and its concepts in the African context, this lhandbook (the first of two volumes) opens up the diverse acuity of commentary on exciting topics, and in the process challenges and stimulates the quest for knowledge. Wide-ranging in its scope, themes, language, and approaches, this volume explores, examines, and assesses economic thinking on Africa, and Africa's contribution to the discipline. The editors bring a set of powerful resources to this endeavor, most notably a team of internationally-renowned economists whose diverse viewpoints are complemented by the perspectives of philosophers, political scientists, and anthropologists.
