Book excerpt: Human Resource Management (HRM) plays an important and strategic role in the success of international joint ventures. Based on information collected from progressive, successful international joint ventures involving companies such as Chrysler, Ciba-Geigy, Corning, Mitsubishi, and Siemens, the author delivers chapters rich in verbatim quotations from executives and other joint venture employees. Each chapter concludes with a summary of key points that are a guide for attaining excellence in joint ventures. The book will be of special interest to both managers and scholars who seek a fuller view of HRM in international joint ventures. Evaluating effective joint ventures, the author considers the subtle people dimensions involved in these operations. A special feature of the book is the treatment of human resource management from the interorganizational viewpoint of parent corporations and the joint venture firm. The author addresses such interesting issues as (1) how parent strategic goals influence HRM in the venture, (2) the importance of HRM operational assignments within the JV management contract, (3) the strengths and limitations of various HRM policies and practices, (4) the role of culture, and (5) organizational learning at strategic and operational levels in each venture. Valuable knowledge into best practices for strategic HRM allows practitioners to enhance their joint venture success.

Book excerpt: Joint Venture Learning to Cooperate and Cooperating to Learn Joint venture management is a demanding and continuous process of organizing, guiding and developing, not only within the joint venture itself but also within the partner companies. Relationships between each side will change over time and problems can arise at different stages of development. An essential part of joint venture management consists of monitoring these stages, anticipating possible difficulties and avoiding them by applying appropriate measures in the areas of strategy, structure, human resources and culture. Using a range of international cases from top multinational companies, the authors present an effective model for implementing a successful joint venture management strategy. This is an essential book for practitioners in strategic planning, business professionals interested in entering joint ventures, as well as academics and students of international business. "This book offers valuable insights into how to make joint ventures work, both for practitioners and researchers. It represents a true step forward when it comes to better understanding how joint ventures function. The book significantly links joint ventures to present thinking on organizational learning and demonstrates more effectively than has been discussed elsewhere how the two fit together." Professor Peter Lorange President of IMD (International Institute for Management Development) "In our joint ventures we always look for strong complementarity with our partners. This book enlarges the traditional view of cooperation by delivering new and valuable insights into processes of interorganizational learning and knowledge management. The authors share with their readers a thoughtful toolbox built on practical experience." Franz Nawratil Chairman and CEO Hewlett-Packard Europe "Joint ventures have become an important business tool for market entry, use of synergies and innovations. Too many joint ventures are dissolved before the actual potential of these organizations have been capitalized. This book highlights the key factors of success in joint venture management by focusing on strategy development, structuring, cultural awareness and human resource management." M & A Review

Book excerpt: In today s era of International business, International Human Resource Management (IHRM) is emerging as a crucial factor since organizations are run by people. What is interesting in this phenomenon is, not only that there are differences in people across the countries, but even within a country or regions within it. This complex socio-cultural and psychological fabric coupled with historical, geographic, economic and political factors, creates certain boundary conditions and makes IHRM a very complex process. The intention of this book is to portray the various factors that are connected with managing Human Resources in International Business. Since the two are inseparable, any organization aspiring to participate as a player in international business must develop the knowledge, skills and acumen to perceive the subtle nuances that govern the rules of game. IHRM as a discipline cuts across all other business operations in the international context and plays a vital role in the success or failure of a business venture since, businesses are essentially driven by people. In the light of the above, this book has sought to address some of the issues that relate to IHRM, which need to be logically understood by any keen observer of international business, today. The approach of this book has been to detail IHRM both, in terms of a function, as well as a process and the factors or key elements that are attached to them.To make this book reader-friendly, chapter highlights have been added at the beginning of each chapter to facilitate the reader to identify the broader areas that may be learnt from a particular chapter. Each chapter also contains detailed references and key terms. Conceptual questions, multiple choices, web-based exercises are some of the additional features of the book. Relevant diagrammatic representation, relevant case study and list of web references have been also added in this book.

Book excerpt: The international human resource management models developed in the last decade pursue a contextual analysis of the standardisation (global integration) of multinational parent companies’ human resource management policies and practices and localisation (local differentiation) of host countries' practices. However, as a popular but unique international alliance, the process by which international joint ventures determined HRM policies and practices remained unclear. This research utilizes a resource dependency perspective to explore the company-specific determinants of Chinese-western joint ventures' HRM formation, by investigating JV parent companies HRM decision drivers in terms of contractual and non-contractual resources, expertise, consistency requirements, and internationalization experience. Through five in-depth case studies, this research demonstrated that HRM standardisation or localisation is a function of the IJV parents’ HR decision drivers. Additional variables, contextual factors and future research directions are discussed. Contributions of this research include a balanced consideration of both partners in the international joint venture to counter the ethnocentric lens of MNC-subsidiary relationships. The research recasts standardisation and localisation as a continuum that should express the interests of multiple partners, rather than the interests of one in a host country context.
