Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology, Vol. 1 of 4 "Good wine needs no bush," but it will perhaps not be an infringement of this maxim to introduce, in a few words, Professor Luciani's excellent Text-Book of Physiology to the English-reading public. The Italian Text-book is now in its third edition, the final pages being in the Press. One or other of the earlier editions has been translated into French, German, and Russian, and it is a matter for surprise that we have had to wait so long for an English version. In the making of physiological text-books, we are at the parting of the ways. The physiologists of the past generation were brought up to know with familiarity all that had been recently done in physiological research, whether in vertebrates or invertebrates, in animals or in plants. The facts were not so numerous that they could not be stored in the memory without cumbering the judgment, and Physiologists could in some sort be first-hand authorities on all branches of the subject. That condition has been gradually passing away, and it is hardly possible for any one who is not of the old school to write an advanced text-book covering the whole ground of Physiology. Thus the text-book of single authorship is giving way to the text-book of multiple authorship. The latter, whatever its merits, has not the unity of view and the sense of proportion which belong to the former - qualities very important in a book intended for students. Professor Luciani's book, whilst describing phenomena with considerable detail, treats lucidly the broad principles to be deduced from them. It stands midway between the text-book which confines itself to summing up the results of physiological investigation, and that which gives also a minute historical account of the progress of investigation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Human Physiology To set fixed limits to the subject matter of physiology is a very difficult task, because, properly conceived, large portions of the entire group of medical and biological sciences belong to its province. A text-book designed primarily for medical students can, however, regard the field as somewhat more restricted; for the prospective physician has abundant opportunity to amplify his knowledge of the bodily functions from his other studies. Hence in this book I have followed the usual custom and have brought together only so much of our information respecting the human body as can be described as pertaining to its normal functions. The discoveries made in the realms of practical medicine, of experimental pathology and of pharmacology, which in many respects are so full of significance for the processes of the body, are, therefore, for the most part passed by. In like manner the facts of comparative physiology have been alluded to only in exceptional cases, since an exhaustive discussion of them would have increased the size of the book to a not inconsiderable extent. For the same reason I have been unable to find a place for the short histological discussion customary in text-books. I do not regard this as an error, for a necessarily brief and superficial resume of the most important histological facts could be of no great service, since the student needs a more extensive knowledge of the finer structure of the body and must in any case obtain this from the text-books devoted especially to that subject. I do not therefore at all mistake the great importance of histology for physiology; on the contrary, I would recommend that in the, study of a text-book of this science a text-book of histology (and one of anatomy) be always at hand in order to combine the physiological facts with the histological and anatomical facts. Physiological chemistry also has developed so far that more and more it can claim the right to be regarded as an independent science. On the other hand it is not possible to present the physiological facts without reference to the chemical processes of the body. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology, Vol. 4 of 5 Movement and Sensation are the two extremes of the processes of animal life by which the organism is brought into direct relation with the outer world. Movements are always objective in character and can be studied directly by external observation. Sensations are invariably subjective, and can only be directly analysed by introspection, and indirectly inferred from the expressional movements which are their external concomitants. It follows that the physiology of sensation in man is the necessary starting point for the comparative physiology of sensation in animals; and the intimate observation of our own consciousness is the only available basis for judging the psychical activities of animals or of other men. All organs of the body that are supplied with afferent nerves continually send information of their functional state to the central nervous system, and exert a reflex controlling influence along the efferent nerves without passing the threshold of consciousness. At other times they send to the centres messages which are not entirely subconscious, but emerge vaguely and indefinitely in consciousness as a more or less decided sense of well-being or the reverse. Or again, the messages from the different organs to the centres may definitely cross the threshold of consciousness and give rise to distinct sensations which differ in quality and intensity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Human Physiology When, now two years ago, at the solicitation of several friends, I undertook the translation of Professor Hermann's 'Elements of Physiology, ' I was actuated by the conviction, shared in by nearly all teachers, that an urgent need existed for an English text-book which should represent the actual state of the science. It appeared to me, at the same time, that no text-book on Physiology existed in any European language at once so concise, comprehensive, and philosophical as the work which I now introduce to the English reader, and I therefore undertook its translation. During the progress of my task, which a multiplicity of occupations caused to be a more protracted one than I had anticipated, my early convictions as to the excellence of the work have steadily deepened. The author therefore has given, here and there, many hints as to how he should proceed in easy dissections; and has introduced a number Of simple experiments, so that the knowledge gained may be Of a sound character. It is too often felt that such practical and experimental methods of acquiring information are roundabout and tedious; but the author's experience has taught him to affirm that it is the readiest, surest, and certainly the most pleasant way of attaining the end in view. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Human Physiology: Designed for the Use of Practitioners and Students of Medicine IN preparing this text-book for the use of students and practitioners of medicine, I have endeavored to adapt it to the wants of the profession, as they have appeared to me after a considerable experience as a public teacher of hu man physiology. My large treatise in five volumes is here condensed, and I have omitted bibliographical citations and matters of purely historical interest. Many subjects, which were considered rather elaborately in my larger work, are here presented in a much more concise form. I have added, also, numer ous illustrations, which I hope may lighten the labors of the student. A few of these are original, but by far the greater part has been selected from relia ble authorities. I have thought it not without historical interest to reproduce exactly some of the classical engravings from the works of great discoverers, such as illustrations contained in the original editions of Fabricius, Harvey, and Asellius. In addition, I have Copied a few of the beautiful microscopi cal photographs taken at the United States Army Medical Museum by Dr. J. J. Woodward, who kindly furnished them to me and to whom I here express my grateful acknowledgments. I have also to thank M. Sappey for his kind ness in furnishing electrotypes of many of the superb engravings with which his great work upon anatomy is illustrated. My work in five volumes was intended as a book of reference, which I hope will continue to be useful to those who desire an account of the literature of physiology as well as a statement of the facts of the science. I have always endeavored, in public teaching, to avoid giving undue prominence to points in which I might myself be particularly interested from having made them sub jects of special study or of original research. In my text-book, I have carried out the same idea, striving to teach, systematically and with uniform emphasis, what students of medicine are expected to learn in physiology, and avoiding elaborate discussions of subjects not directly connected with practical medi cine, surgery, and obstetrics. While I have referred to my original observa tions upon the location of the sense of want of air in the general system, the new excretory function of the liver, the function of glycogenesis, the in u ence of muscular exercise upon the elimination of urea, etc., I have not con sidered these subjects with great minuteness and have generally referred the reader to monographs for the details of my experiments. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology: A Text-Book for High Schools and Colleges Those who are pursuing researches in the chemistry of living things are more and more definitely separated from those whose studies are physical. It is scarcely possible to be an authority in both subdivisions. Specialization constantly becomes more pronounced. For example, the subject of the electric phenomena which can be observed in living tissues is extensive enough by itself to engage the exclusive attention of many students. Methods in Physiology. - Somet_hing must now be said of the methods which physiologists employ. Evidently they must work upon living matter since their interest is in the reactions which are peculiar to it. It does not follow that they always make use of intact organisms for the living state may often be protracted for some time in portions of animals (or plants) detached from the body. Thus the muscles of a frog's leg can be preserved for hours after separation from the other systems and will behave in much the same way as if they were still united with them. This property of survival, which is so valuable to experimenters, is much more to be relied on in the so-called cold - blooded than in the warm-blooded animals. An acquaintance with at least the existence of frontier interests, and even a participation de tactu with science at its growing surface, cannot be excluded from the laboratories of a medical school without serious and immediate loss to the interests of medicine and of surgery. With regard to the plan of construction of this book. The chapter headings are intended to serve a double purpose: as a summary or syllabus - being, in fact, the condensed lecture-syllabus that I have used during the last nine years; and as a means of self-examination. A student having read certain paragraphs or chapters, should return to the chapter heading, and find by its re capitulation whether it contains expressions that are meaningless to him, or whether it recalls a series of ideas that he has understood and assimilated. If an unfamiliar technical word is met with, its meaning should be ascertained at some other part of the book, through the index. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology: An Elementary Text-Book of Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene From a considerable experience with both very elementary and more advanced classes, the author has been led to certain con elusions in regard to the teaching of elementary physiology and hygiene. It is not proposed to enter here into a discussion of the correctness of these conclusions, but a brief statement of a few principles that seem fundamental may perhaps be allowable. The chief object of teaching physiology in the public schools is to train the pupils to keep their bodies in health. The mere teaching of anatomy and physiology will not accomplish this, for the pupil cannot master the structure and workings of the body in a way that will enable him to frame the laws of health and apply them. Neither can the desired end be reached by teach ing rules of health without an anatomical and physiological basis; for without such a basis, hygiene is an intangible and an elusive subject. The author has therefore concluded that a conservative middle course is wiser than either of the extremes of method mentioned above. An elementary text in physiology should be a balanced text, containing sufficient anatomy to make clear the broader outlines of the structure of the human body, enough physiology to make plain the great laws according to which the body lives, and a full discussion of how a violation of these laws may be avoided. For the introduction of certain new matter, as, for example, the cell idea, the work of enzymes, and matter relating to germ diseases, there is little need for explanation. The groundwork of physiology and pathology has in recent years so shifted and extended itself, that the subject-matter of an elementary course must to a considerable extent be altered if it is to furnish 3.
