Book excerpt: A contextual complement to its prequel, this volume attempts to present the major socio-psychological and cultural influences on the developing Indian subject within the Indian context. This is pivotal as most books on human development are based on Western patterns and examples, which are vastly different from the Indian historical, cultural, and chronological setting. The book analyzes development from childhood to adolescence in the Indian context, also focusing on the mother figure that is nurturer and plays an active role in the subject's development. Its multidisciplinary focus on psychological, sociological, anthropological, and even economic and socio-political dimensions that affect this development severely is explained lucidly through several flow charts, paradigm charts and diagrams.

Development theories relevant to the Indian subject are analyzed through empirical data with an emphasis on yet the unresearched domains of the Indian psyche. Socialization is a basic conceptual frame in this book, as it is the core of the development process related to the individual's chronological age and maturational stages. Further areas of interdisciplinary directions towards understanding the holistic development of the Indian subject in the contemporary age are also identified.

Book excerpt: "Information on human development in India has depended heavily on Western-oriented concepts. However, Indian academia over the past three decades has emphasised and pursued indigenous culture-specific conceptualisations. This volume links together the general concepts in psychology, sociology and, to some extent, anthropology, to focus on the culture-specific development of the Indian and to present a holistic perspective." "Human Development in the Indian Context: A Socio-Cultural Focus, Vol. I contains essential information for an understanding of the nature of development of the Indian psyche and ethos. In this context, the author examines the significant aspects of development. In doing so, she presents a paradigm of an eclectic point of view, analysing basic concepts, sources and knowledge of human development in the Indian situation. She also discusses the critical skills required of the individual, the identity of the Indian and his adaptive resilience to the heterogeneity of his culture. This volume provides information to new readers and is a reference book targeted at university students, developmental institutions and to some extent, the students of comparative Asian studies."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Jha is the right scholar and economist to take readers through the development of the Indian economy. Readers will be in good hands.’ —Edmund Phelps, Columbia University, USA, and winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize in Economics ‘This is perhaps the best and most scholarly contribution to understanding the Indian Economy and Society. Its rich historical perspective and a profound understanding of how India has evolved into a major economic power set standards of scholarship and analytical rigour that will be hard to surpass". —Raghav Gaiha, University of Manchester, UK ‘Linking of economy and society is increasingly recognised as essential for addressing policy challenges by the current phase of globalisation. As such this study should be valuable not just for those studying India, but also for those interested in global developments.’ —Mukul Asher, National University of Singapore, Singapore ‘This book is a tour-de-force review of the fundamental topics on the Indian political economy and society that are relevant for any committed social scientist to be aware of.’ —Sumit K. Majumdar, University of Texas at Dallas, USA ‘Over the years, I have benefited from reading the works of Professor Jha, and from teaching from them. I enthusiastically recommend these two volumes.’ —Raaj Kumar Sah, University of Chicago, USA This two-volume work provides an account of how India has been meeting its myriad of economic, political and social challenges and how things are expected to evolve in the future. Despite enormous challenges at the time of independence, India chose to address them within a secular, liberal, democratic framework, which guaranteed several fundamental rights. Challenges included intense mass poverty and hunger, very poor literacy and educational abilities of the population, the task of uniting a country with scores of languages and ethnicities ruled by different entities for decades and persistent threats of external aggression, to name just a few. Over time, incomes and opportunities have expanded enormously and India has regained her self-confidence as a nation. In this second volume, Jha examines the performance and prospects for India’s agriculture, manufacturing and services sectors. In addition, India’s links with the external world through international trade, investment, migration and remittances are discussed, as well as gender issues, inter-community relations and India’s future prospects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human development demands that all social groups have equal access to the services provided by the State and have equal opportunity for upward economic and social mobility. It is also necessary to ensure that there is no discrimination against any section of the society. India's constitution contains various provisions for the development of marginalized groups. Their individual and collective growth, however, cannot be ensured without improving their surroundings and providing basic necessities of life. The major challenges of human development in India are: the measurement and aggregation of human development * the manifestation of poverty in all dimensions of life * the drop out rate and stagnation in primary education * a greater demand for higher education than what is currently available * decontextualization of the present system of education * persistent regional disparities and social inequalities * unregulated human activity and the unsustainable use of environmental resources * the gross under valuation of women's economic contribution. The book, consisting of 24 scholarly articles, provides valuable material on various dimensions of human development in India. It also makes practicable recommendations in this context.

Book excerpt: This book presents a multidimensional perspective on the interlinkage between human development, community characteristics and public service delivery with special reference to India. The chapters in the book analyze the influence of public service delivery on human development from neo-classical as well as Marxian point of view. Thus, the expositions in the book provides a balanced mix of macro and micro approaches in the study of development. The analytical discussions are supplemented by case studies and empirical estimates so as to demonstrate the applicability of the theory and the theoretical discourse about human development, community network and the success and failures of critical public services in the Indian context. The methodology followed in the chapters involves critical survey of existing literature, case studies, field survey and use of econometric techniques as well as statistical tools of index construction. While contributors are primarily scholars from neo-classical economics discipline, some are intellectuals from the field of political economy and development studies. Given the wide array of development perspectives, this book is of interest not only to students and researcher of development economics, social science and management, but also a valuable reading for development practitioners and policy makers, who would be interested in understanding how community and public institutions interact to determine access to health, education and social security services that shapes the wellbeing of disadvantaged populations. The lessons and implications are extremely pertinent to other emerging economies, in particular those in South Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human Development in an Unequal World deals with the twenty-first-century challenges of unstable economic growth and sustainability and the re-emergence of deprivations and inequalities in multiple realms. It argues that the broader perspective of human development is most suited in reorienting development towards a more equitable, sustainable, and empowering world. The authors discuss the concept and philosophy of the capabilities and human development approach, its measurement, the links between economic growth and human development, and the role of social sector policy, gender equality, and securing sustainability. In doing so, they analyse frameworks, processes, institutions, and actors, and weave together concepts, methods, and evidence from numerous developing countries. The chapters offer an integrated understanding of the importance of capabilities, freedoms, and human flourishing in the process of development. This volume calls for an approach that focuses on the humanness of development and brings people back to the centre stage—a phenomenon that has receded to the background in the neoliberal era.

Book excerpt: Sustainable Human Development in the Twenty-First Century is a component of Encyclopedia of Human Resources Policy, Development and Management in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty Encyclopedias. The volume of Human Development examines the state and nature of human development and identifies factors that determine its promotion for the twenty-first century. A general goal, since the ultimate goal for human development is to enhance the quality of human life. However, the concept “quality of human life” is not well defined. It is determined by a set of interrelated factors that cut across many disciplines with varied perspectives and paradigms. These include the prevailing culture, health status, economic performance, technological development, political and social conditions, the building of human capacity and capabilities, and institutional development on the local and global levels. For example, in an environment characterized by a better quality of human life, it is expected that people will be able to lead long and productive lives. They are also expected to enjoy good health, have access to knowledge and educational opportunities, and be treated by all with respect, in a socially equitable and dignified manner. In the sphere of political economy, they are expected to have the opportunity to participate in governance decisions that affect their lives and the community in which they live; and to have the potential to earn sufficient income to supply themselves with adequate nutrition, shelter, and other material and aesthetic needs. Furthermore, people are expected to maintain a sustainable environment and equitable social contracts across space and generations, especially in the context of the evolving global governance. The volume of “Sustainable Human Development in the Twenty-First Century” is divided into five topics which are then expanded into multiple subtopics, each as a chapter presented in two volumes. The first is “Major issues in Human Development” and provides an over view of the Topic with emphasis on the sociological foundation of human development. The second Topic, “Diversity and Historical Processes” reviews the historical and technological processes which have led to the present state of human diversity and differentiation. The third Topic, “Causes of Global Change” focuses on whether it is possible in the present global environment to enlarge people's capabilities so that economic progress may be translated into a multidimensional human happiness. The fourth Topic, “Consequences of Global Change” examines global change not in the narrow sense of short-term economic change, but rather as historical waves of long-term development. The fifth Topic on Planning Strategies reviews current practice and projects challenges in the next century. These two volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College Students, Educators, Professional Practitioners, Research Personnel and Policy Analysts, Managers, and Decision Makers and NGOs.
