Book excerpt: Abstract: Developing countries start the decade facing two major challenges: to continue the social and economic progress of the past 30 years in an international climate that looks less helpful; and to tackle the plight of the 800 million people living in absolute poverty, who have benefitted too little from past progress. This report examines some of the difficulties and prospects in both areas. One of its central themes is the importance of people in development. The first part of the report addresses the expected sluggish world economic growth as oil-importing countries reduce their current account deficits and adapt to higher energy costs. Domestic policies of developing countries will be crucial, and the fate of poor people in these countries will be decided largely by domestic opportunities and policies. The second part of the report describes the role of human development programs (in education, health, nutrition, and fertility reduction) and their related effects on productivity and population growth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Income-Poverty and Beyond" emphasizes the need to go beyond the conventional definition of poverty and look at the various human aspects of the problem. A team of eminent social scientists - Suresh Tendulkar, Abusaleh Shariff, R Radhakrishna, MSS Meenakshisundaram, Seeta K Prabhu, Ravi Srivastava and the editors, Raja J Chelliah and R Sudarshan - take a comprehensive view of poverty to include the concept of human poverty, seen as the "the denial of opportunities and choices most basic to human development." Special care has been taken to make the information and analysis accessible to the general reader Using the latest available data for India as well as edited versions of papers commissioned by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for a South Asia poverty monitor the broad conclusion that has emerged is that more public action is needed to counter the high prevalence of human poverty. Therefore, measures to reduce income-poverty, including high rates of economic growth are not sufficient. The,first two chapters dwell on the concept of income-poverty, interstate and inter group disparities, and poverty trends in India over the decade 1983-94. There follows an examination of human development in rural India, availability of food for the poor, various programs aimed at removing poverty, the indices for human poverty and public financing of social services, human priority expenditures, and human expenditure ratios for the Indian states. The perceptions of the poor themselves in assessing their own poverty and in developing policies to improve their status are discussed and an Epilogue appeals to the national and international community to take serious note of human poverty inthe midst of which we all live. This book will be invaluable to teachers, students, policy-makers and others who need to understand the multi-faceted nature of poverty in India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will fascinate the reader as the author shares his own true story since his childbirth in Egypt, his growth, passions, sufferings and hopes and that of many others he knew. The book brings to light the relational character of the cosmos and all life it contains, as a reflection of the Mystery of God who is Love. Based on the historical development of thought and science as well as recent research, the author argues that humanity is destined for the Second Coming of Christ, the Alpha and Omega. Based on the development of civilizations the book illustrates violence, vengeance, greed, passion, fear, security, collaboration, love, and success as examples from history of individuals as well as cultures. The premise of the book is that humans by nature are relational. Since early civilizations, collaboration and reciprocity between tribes led to trade and thus learning developed in many centers. But knowledge is not only intellectual. Knowledge is completed in the love of the other which is pervasive in human thought and relations. The conclusion proposes imitation of love, the love shown in the life and teachings of Christ, even if hard, in order to live eternal life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) have contributed to reductions in poverty and improvements in the human condition in many parts of the world since their "invention" in 2000 and 2001. It nonetheless remains the case that today, as on all the previous days of the twenty-first century, almost one billion people will go hungry. Debates about whether the MDGs have made a positive contribution to poverty eradication and/or whether they have achieved as much as they should have done are becoming more frequent as 2015 and the "end of the MDGs" approaches. This book highlights that active debate about what the MDGs have achieved and what that means for the crafting of a post-2015 international framework for action, must become a priority. The work begins by examining the global context of the goals from a variety of perspectives, and moves on to focus on the region that continues to be the most impoverished and which looks likely to fall short of meeting many of the MDGs: Africa. Presenting both a broad overview of the issues and drawing together prestigious scholars and practitioners from a variety of fields, this work provides a significant contribution to debates surrounding both global poverty and the success and future of the MDGs.

Book excerpt: Gulf Charities and Islamic Philanthropy in the "Age of Terror" and Beyond is the first book to be published on the charities of Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Gulf, covering their work both domestic and international. From a diversity of viewpoints, the book addresses: the historical roots of Islamic philanthropy in religious traditions and geopolitical movements; the interactions of the Gulf charities with "Western" relief and development institutions - now under pressure owing to budgetary constraints; numerous case studies from the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia; the impact of violent extremism on the sector, with the legal repercussions that have followed - especially in the USA; the recent history of attempts to alleviate the obstacles faced by bona fide Islamic charities, whose absence from major conflict zones now leaves a vacuum for extremist groups to penetrate; the prospects for a less politicized Islamic charity sector when the so-called "war on terror" eventually loses its salience.
