Book Synopsis Hueys over Khe Sanh by : Peter Greene
Download or read book Hueys over Khe Sanh written by Peter Greene and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2024-09-14 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vivid memoir of the Vietnam War by a crew chief who flew on hundreds of flights during his tour. During Vietnam, the basic role of the USMC gunship squadrons was to protect the transport helicopters during medevac missions, troop insertions and extractions, resupply missions, and supporting the Marines on the ground during operations and patrols. Basically, whenever the Marines or South Vietnam friendlies got in trouble the gunships were dispatched to assist them. Shortly after arriving in Vietnam—and after only a month as a gunner aboard a Huey gunship—Peter Greene and several other new Marines were moved to the Crew Chief’s position. They would fly practically every day, with different flight crews, for the next year. In this vivid memoir he recalls many of those missions, including providing gunship support for MACV-SOG in and around I Corps area, working with Marine Recon, and undertaking frequent, perilous resupply and medevac and medevac support missions.
Download or read book A Tiger's Tale written by Craig Cooper and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-08-31 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally, this was just a journal to document a tiger experience. Capt. Ian Sonnenberg invited his dad, John Sonnenberg, and his uncle, Craig Cooper, to join him in Honolulu aboard the USS San Diego (LPD-22) and sail to Camp Pendleton, California, on a tiger cruise. There was some brief preliminary information and a couple of emails, but there was little information on what to expect from the experience. The plan was to capture the experience so others would feel more prepared. But this project turned into something more. The journal then shifted to creating a guidebook for anyone going on an extended tiger cruise as well as composing a journal. As the journal developed into a manual for tiger cruises, it took on another dimension. This document grew to be an optimistic accounting of the future of America. This team of Sailors and Marines crossed the globe, with our flag proudly flying from the mast, and showed the world the strength and spirit of the United States. Theyall the US militaryindeed, are celebrated in the successful culmination of their missions. In addition to this optimistic message came the realization that the future leaders of our industries, institutions, and government are being developed within these brave men and women. Hoorah!

Download or read book Kingfish U written by Robert Mann and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2023-06-07 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No political leader is more closely identified with Louisiana State University than the flamboyant governor and U.S. senator Huey P. Long, who devoted his last years to turning a small, undistinguished state school into an academic and football powerhouse. From 1931, when Long declared himself the “official thief” for LSU, to his death in 1935, the school’s budget mushroomed, its physical plant burgeoned, its faculty flourished, and its enrollment tripled. Along with improving LSU’s academic reputation, Long believed the school’s football program and band were crucial to its success. Taking an intense interest in the team, Long delivered pregame and halftime pep talks, devised plays, stalked the sidelines during games, and fired two coaches. He poured money into a larger, flashier band, supervised the hiring of two directors, and, with the second one, wrote a new fight song, “Touchdown for LSU.” While he rarely meddled in academic affairs, Long insisted that no faculty member criticize him publicly. When students or faculty from “his school” opposed him, retribution was swift. Long’s support for LSU did not come without consequences. His unrelenting involvement almost cost the university its accreditation. And after his death, several of his allies—including his handpicked university president—went to prison in a scandal that almost destroyed LSU. Rollicking and revealing, Robert Mann’s Kingfish U is the definitive story of Long’s embrace of LSU.

Download or read book Tiger Force written by Michael Sallah and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2006-05-15 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the outset of the Vietnam War, the Army created an experimental fighting unit that became known as "Tiger Force." The Tigers were to be made up of the cream of the crop-the very best and bravest soldiers the American military could offer. They would be given a long leash, allowed to operate in the field with less supervision. Their mission was to seek out enemy compounds and hiding places so that bombing runs could be accurately targeted. They were to go where no troops had gone, to become one with the jungle, to leave themselves behind and get deep inside the enemy's mind. The experiment went terribly wrong. What happened during the seven months Tiger Force descended into the abyss is the stuff of nightmares. Their crimes were uncountable, their madness beyond imagination-so much so that for almost four decades, the story of Tiger Force was covered up under orders that stretched all the way to the White House. Records were scrubbed, documents were destroyed, men were told to say nothing. But one person didn't follow orders. The product of years of investigative reporting, interviews around the world, and the discovery of an astonishing array of classified information, Tiger Force is a masterpiece of journalism. Winners of the Pulitzer Prize for their Tiger Force reporting, Michael Sallah and Mitch Weiss have uncovered the last great secret of the Vietnam War.

Book Synopsis Through the Eyes of a Tiger by : Jay Hoyland
Download or read book Through the Eyes of a Tiger written by Jay Hoyland and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-05-04 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August of 1962, civilian medical doctor Jay Hoyland became an active-duty captain and medical officer in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during the Vietnam War. For the next twelve months, Hoyland provided medical support as a flight surgeon to the Ninety-Third Helicopter Companythe Soc Trang Tigers. It was a year that would prove to be pivotal for Vietnam, the United States, and Hoyland himself. Through the Eyes of a Tiger is the story of one mans tour of duty in the Mekong Delta from November of 1962 through November of 1963. With the help of Hoylands wartime journals and letters sent home to his family, he recreates an unvarnished account of his life during this tumultuous time. Whether it is a heartbreaking visit to a Catholic orphanage, the adrenaline of combat, the unique relationship between brothers-in-arms, or the horrors of the hospital ward, Hoylands vivid imagery and thoughtful prose paint a realistic portrait of war. Set against the broader historical context of the Vietnam War, Through the Eyes of a Tiger is a worthy addition to the scholarship available on the Vietnam War. But more importantly, it reveals the dramatic impact of war, both present and future, on the soldier himself.
Download or read book Kingfish written by Richard D. White, Jr. and published by Random House. This book was released on 2009-03-25 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the moment he took office as governor in 1928 to the day an assassin’s bullet cut him down in 1935, Huey Long wielded all but dictatorial control over the state of Louisiana. A man of shameless ambition and ruthless vindictiveness, Long orchestrated elections, hired and fired thousands at will, and deployed the state militia as his personal police force. And yet, paradoxically, as governor and later as senator, Long did more good for the state’s poor and uneducated than any politician before or since. Outrageous demagogue or charismatic visionary? In this powerful new biography, Richard D. White, Jr., brings Huey Long to life in all his blazing, controversial glory. White taps invaluable new source material to present a fresh, vivid portrait of both the man and the Depression era that catapulted him to fame. From his boyhood in dirt-poor Winn Parish, Long knew he was destined for power–the problem was how to get it fast enough to satisfy his insatiable appetite. With cunning and crudity unheard of in Louisiana politics, Long crushed his opponents in the 1928 gubernatorial race, then immediately set about tightening his iron grip. The press attacked him viciously, the oil companies howled for his blood after he pushed through a controversial oil processing tax, but Long had the adulation of the people. In 1930, the Kingfish got himself elected senator, and then there was no stopping him. White’s account of Long’s heyday unfolds with the mesmerizing intensity of a movie. Pegged by President Roosevelt as “one of the two most dangerous men in the country,” Long organized a radical movement to redistribute money through his Share Our Wealth Society–and his gospel of pensions for all, a shorter workweek, and free college spread like wildfire. The Louisiana poor already worshiped him for building thousands of miles of roads and funding schools, hospitals, and universities; his outrageous antics on the Senate floor gained him a growing national base. By 1935, despite a barrage of corruption investigations, Huey Long announced that he was running for president. In the end, Long was a tragic hero–a power addict who squandered his genius and came close to destroying the very foundation of democratic rule. Kingfish is a balanced, lucid, and absolutely spellbinding portrait of the life and times of the most incendiary figure in the history of American politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lively free-hitting narrative . . . written with a proper appreciation of the grotesque humor of many of its episodes . . . but also with the proper appreciation of the political significance . . . for the rest of the United States. New York Times Book Review This book deserves to be widely read. Library Journal Nothing like the regime of Huey Long has ever been enacted on American soil before. Only a patriot of the staunchest character could stand up to the power of Huey and the threats and reprisals which he used so freely. Those who were willing to do so paralleled the acts of America's bravest patriots at any stage of American history. Nearly all the books on this subject end with the death of Huey Long. Louisiana Hayride continues through the years of scandals which ended in my election in 1940. Huey's prediction that his successors would never be able to wield his great power without going to jail was born out by events described in this book. This is the story of the sowing of the wind, but the major part of the book is devoted to the reaping of the whirlwind. In this telling, Louisiana Hayride is unsurpassed. It is a story for all Americans. From the forward by Sam Houston Jones Governor, 1940-1944
