Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's going to take Jimmy and Ana's best efforts to get Hubris Towers through the big inspection—and all these helpers aren't exactly helping. When Hubris Towers acquires the last house on the block, Mr. Hubris is excited to welcome local matriarch Mother Robert as the newest tenant of Hubris Towers and announce the launch of an ambitious new construction project. But with the big inspection one day away and the building falling apart at the seams, it's going to be all Jimmy and Ana can do to keep Hubris Towers from getting shut down. Add a literary interlude with Ms. Leonelle, a little help from Gustav the criminal bellhop-in-training, and rather less help from Mr. Schwartz, and it's anyone's guess whether Hubris Towers will even stay open long enough to demolish Mother Robert's house. The Russians are eager to help, though, and even if Jimmy is poor in money, he's rich in leftover tuna. So it will probably turn out fine. This is the sixth installment of Hubris Towers, a comedy series for fans of P. G. Wodehouse and Fawlty Towers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Luxury living at Hubris Towers: Isn’t it time you get what you really deserve?” Comedy of manners meets comedy of errors in a new series for fans of Fawlty Towers and P. G. Wodehouse. When Jimmy Acorn applies to become the new concierge at Hubris Towers, there are a few things he doesn’t know. He doesn’t know how he’s going to make this month’s rent (or last month’s, for that matter). He doesn’t know why rich tenants would move into a building that’s still under construction. And he doesn’t know, strictly speaking, just what a concierge does. What he does know is that eviction is looming and a PhD in literature isn’t nearly as marketable as he’d hoped. So when his interview spins out of control thanks to an infuriatingly helpful bellhop, a grimly courteous manager, and a mounting pile of errands from the condo’s eccentric denizens, Jimmy has no choice but to smile hard, find some allies, keep the puppy away from the champagne, and see if he can carve out a niche for himself in the wildly unexpected world of Hubris Towers. Hubris Towers is a fresh comedy series released regularly in 45-55 page episodes. Visit byfaroe.com/hubris for more information and to sign up for updates on new releases and exclusive deals.

Book Synopsis Babel by : Samuel L. Boyd

Book excerpt: In Babel: Political Rhetoric of a Confused Legacy, Samuel L. Boyd offers a new reading of the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11:1-9. Using recent insights on the rhetoric of Neo-Assyrian politics and its ideology of governance as well as advances in biblical studies, Boyd shows how the Tower of Babel was not originally about a tower, Babylon, or the advent of multilingualism, at least in the earliest phases of the history and literary context of the story. Rather, the narrative was a critique against the Assyrian empire using themes of human overreach found in many places in Genesis 1-11. Boyd clarifies how idioms of Assyrian governance could have found their way into the biblical text, and how the Hebrew of Genesis 11:1-9 itself leads to a different translation of the passage than found in versions of the Bible, one that does not involve language. This new reading sheds light on how the story became about language. Boyd argues that this new understanding of Babel also illuminates aspects of the call of Abram when the Tower of Babel is interpreted as a story about something other than the origin of multilingualism. Finally, he frames the historical-critical research on the biblical passage and its reception in ancient Jewish, Christian, and Islamic sources with the uses of the Tower of Babel in modern politics of language and nationalism. He demonstrates how and why Genesis 11:1-9 has become so useful, in often detrimental ways, to the modern nation-state. Boyd explores this intellectual history of the passage into current events in the twenty-first century and offers perspectives on how a new reading of the Tower of Babel can speak to the current cultural and political moment and offer correctives on the uses and abuses of the Bible in the public sphere.

Then, specific Jewish and Christian traditions flowing from the text are identified, and the underlying hermeneutical moves analyzed.

Book excerpt: The real story behind the investigation of Iraq, and the basis for the MSNBC documentary of the same name hosted by Rachel Maddow Filled with news-making revelations that made it a New York Times bestseller, Hubris takes us behind the scenes at the White House, CIA, Pentagon, State Department, and Congress to show how George W. Bush came to invade Iraq--and how his administration struggled with the devastating fallout. Hubris connects the dots between Bush's expletive-laden outbursts at Saddam Hussein, the bitter battles between the CIA and the White House, the fights within the intelligence community over Saddam's supposed weapons of mass destruction, the outing of an undercover CIA officer, and the Bush administration's misleading sales campaign for war. Written by veteran reporters Michael Isikoff and David Corn, this is an inside look at how a president took the nation to war using faulty and fraudulent intelligence. It's a dramatic page-turner and an intriguing account of conspiracy, backstabbing, bureaucratic ineptitude, journalistic malfeasance, and arrogance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cian J. Power explores how the biblical authors viewed and presented a fundamental human reality: the existence of the world's many languages. By examining explicit references to this diversity - such as the ambivalent account of its origins in the Tower of Babel episode - and implicit acknowledgements that included the use of strange-sounding speech to portray alien peoples, he illuminates ideas about Aramaic, Egyptian, Akkadian, and other ancient languages. Drawing on sociolinguistics, Power detects a consistent link between language and - ethnic, political, religious, and divine/human boundaries, and argues that changing historical circumstances are key to the Bible's varying attitudes. Furthermore, the study's findings regarding the biblical authors' ideas about their own language and its importance challenge our very notion of Hebrew.

Book excerpt: Situation Comedy, Character, and Psychoanalysis puts the sitcom character on the analyst's couch and closely examines the characters of Basil Fawlty, Lucy Ricardo and Kim from Australia's Kath & Kim, in order to reveal the essential elements that must exist in a sitcom before even the first joke is written. Original in its approach, D.T. Klika uncovers major findings about the sitcom as well as human behavior and relationships that we find 'arresting' and even "familial†?. By offering a new way of reading the sitcom using psychoanalytic theory, this book can be used as a basis for engaging in critical discourses as well as textual analysis of programs. Psychoanalytic theory enables a reading of character motivations and relationships, in turn elucidating the power struggle that exists between characters in this form of comedy. Situation Comedy, Character, and Psychoanalysis shines a light on what is at play in the sitcom that makes us laugh, and why we love the characters we do, only to discover that this form of comedy is more complex than we first thought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Style matters! The pages of the Hebrew Bible are filled with stories -- short or long, amusing or sad, histories, fables, and morality tales. The ancient narrators use a variety of stylistic devices to structure, to connect, and to separate their tales -- and thus to establish contexts within which meaning comes to light. What are these devices, and how do they guide our reading and our understanding of the text? This book explores some of the answers and shows that it's a matter of style. Fr. Jerome T. Walsh, Ph. D., is also author of 1 Kings in the literary commentary series Berit Olam: Studies in Hebrew Narrative & Poetry (The Liturgical Press, 1996) of which he is also an associate editor. He has contributed to such reference works as The New Jerome Biblical Commentary and The Anchor Bible Dictionary and frequently publishes articles and reviews in professional journals of biblical studies. He is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature and of the Catholic Biblical Association of America, with which he has collaborated on the second edition of the New American Bible translation of the Old Testament. He is head of the department of theology and religious studies at the University of Botswana.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Primeval History (Genesis 1-11) is one of the most complex theological compositions of the Old Testament/the Hebrew Bible. Woven into its multi-layered text one finds reflections on an array of fundamental questions: How did the world come into being? Who is its creator? What role does humankind play in the larger scheme of creation? Why is the world that God made not a perfect one? And finally, is it possible to lead a meaningful and even happy life despite the unpredictabilities of existence? The essays by Andreas Schule assembled in this volume address these and related questions through close readings of Genesis 1-11 and by relating them to kindred textual traditions throughout the Old Testament/the Hebrew Bible.

Book excerpt: Though U.S. leaders try to convince the world of their success in fighting al Qaeda, one anonymous member of the U.S. intelligence community would like to inform the public that we are, in fact, losing the war on terror. Further, until U.S. leaders recognize the errant path they have irresponsibly chosen, he says, our enemies will only grow stronger. According to the author, the greatest danger for Americans confronting the Islamist threat is to believe-at the urging of U.S. leaders-that Muslims attack us for what we are and what we think rather than for what we do. Blustering political rhetor.
