Book excerpt: Discover the dreamlike vision of French sculptor and furniture designer Hubert Le Gall, as reflected in an exceptional collection of his works in this new, limited-edition volume. Contemporary artist Hubert Le Gall draws upon numerous historical sources of inspiration for his sculptures and decorative art--from Pompeian relics, to eighteenth-century furnishings, to Pop Art--and these diverse sources culminate in works that are firmly rooted in the present. This monograph is a curation of Le Gall's work by Pamela Mullin, one of his most devoted collectors; the selected works reflect their shared passion for joyful yet offbeat creations, photographed primarily in situ in a spectacular seventeenth-century manor in Normandy.

Book excerpt: Since 1995 Hubert Le Gall has been creating poetic and functional pieces which look afresh at and give a new meaning to furniture and decorative art. His vision is fanciful, the shapes he produsces are generous, the materials he uses precious. This catalogue retraces the artist's creative process with works which are today considered to be "classics": the famous Marguerite tables, the Flower chests of drawers, as well as more recent pieces which are, as always, inspired by the art and the society of his times.--Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although many writers blend autobiography and fiction, few have been so forthright in admitting it as Gustave Flaubert. In reference to his legendary novel and protagonist, he wrote: "Madame Bovary, c'est moi." Madame Bovary has become an icon for casual readers and feminists alike, but, as Dacia Maraini argues, she is one of the most problematic, though fascinating, female protagonists in modern literature. In this lively, learned, and very personal study, Maraini explores the profound and contradictory relationship between the writer Flaubert and the character his readers have grown to love. Maraini argues that in their desire to claim Emma Bovary as a standard-bearer of revolt, women have often overlooked the bitter, pitiless way in which Flaubert evokes Emma's insignificance and vulgarity. Searching for Emma guides the reader through Flaubert's novel and many of his letters, seeking out the sources of his obsessive cruelty toward Emma. Maraini relates Flaubert's contempt for Emma to his relationship with his mistress, Louise Colet, to his general terror of women, and to his own self-loathing. It was entirely in spite of himself, Maraini writes, that Flaubert created the female Don Quixote so admired for her restlessness and determination. Searching for Emma offers a novelist's insight into the complex relationship between author and character, and into the deepest motivations of fiction.

Book excerpt: "The long and illustrious career of Edouard Vuillard spans the fin-de-siecle and the first four decades of the twentieth century, during which time the French painter, printmaker, and photographer created an extraordinary body of work. This is the first volume to explore Vuillard's rich and varied career in its totality, presenting nearly 350 works that demonstrate the full range of his subject matter and reveal both the public and private sides of this quintessentially Parisian artist." "In a series of illustrated essays and catalogue entries, the authors explore Vuillard's complex and diverse artistic development, beginning with his academic training in Paris in the late 1880s and the innovative Nabi paintings of the 1890s for which he is best known, including his provocative, disquieting middle-class interiors and his work associated with the avant-garde theatre. The authors also examine Vuillard's splendid but lesser known large-scale decorations, his luminous landscapes, and the elegant portraits from the last decades of his career. In addition to paintings, the volume includes a substantial selection of drawings and graphics, together with a large group of striking photographs by the artist, many of which are published here for the first time." "This illustrated catalogue accompanies the most comprehensive exhibition ever devoted to the work of Edouard Vuillard (1868-1940). The exhibition opens at the National Gallery of Art in Washington and travels to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Galeries nationales du Grand Palais in Paris, and the Royal Academy of Arts, London."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: Discover a new side of Paris, hidden in plain sight, with this beautifully illustrated guide to the city's smaller collections and best-kept secrets, from artists' studios to scientific museums. A visit to Paris can often seem like a highlight reel -- the Louvre, the Musee d'Orsay, the Eiffel Tower. But Paris isn't only about the big attractions; in fact, some might say it's the offbeat destinations that hold the greatest treasures. The Little(r) Museums of Paris takes a whimsical journey through these smaller destinations, from the fantastical to the bizarre, offering both a guide to the city and inspiration for armchair travelers. Rather than traveling by neighborhood, this charming guide explores the different types of institutions nestled within Paris, from time capsules like the Musee Nissim de Camondo to explorations of the world beyond the city limits, including the Institute of the Arab World. Readers will peek behind the curtains of artists' apartments and into the microscopes of collections of scientific oddities. Each entry opens up a new world of adventure, with a description of the museum's collection, as well as a short history, watercolor illustrations, and a miniature map. For residents and visitors alike, the captivating illustrations and deeply-researched yet approachable writing will encourage greater appreciation of the cultural diversity, history, and colorful characters that give Paris that je ne sais quoi.

Book excerpt: Few magazines can lay claim to a century of history or to having published work by some extraordinary and distinguished photographers and writers as House & Garden. Now, straight from the pages of this well-loved periodical, The Well-Lived Life presents a lavish chronicle of a country and a culture coming into its own, documenting America's continuing education in matters of house, home and garden over the course of the 20th century. Selecting high points from the magazine, this book surveys the growing confidence and imagination reflected in American interiors and entertaining over the last century -the dinners, picnics and parties of a country dedicated to welcoming others- and the changing definition of home. It also illuminates the joys -sedentary or sporting- Americans have always found in the out-of-doors. The Well-Lived Life surveys the landscape of our lawns and gardens, from rigid formality to exotic beauty, and takes a close look at blooms and their ability to charm, seduce, amaze and inspire. It also travels to the places we build to get away from it all -the cabins, cottages and summer palaces where we shed the formality and stress of everyday life. Above all, this volume illustrates the abiding affection we have for how and where we make our lives. Featuring such legendary photographers as Irving Penn, Horst P. Horst, John Rawlings, Andre Kertesz, Lord Snowdon, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Ezra Stoller and George Hoyningen-Huene Illustrated
