Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Rose It seems right to make some sort of apology, as most of my predecessors have done, for putting forth another Rose-book when there are already so many; but perhaps it is not really required, as the columns devoted to the subject every week in horticultural literature show that there is ever something fresh to be said on the different matters connected with the Rose. My idea was, in the first place, to give, from an amateur, full details of practical culture for amateurs from the beginning to the end: and I ought to be able to do this satisfactorily even if I have not succeeded, as under unfavourable conditions of soil and situation I have done with my own hands every portion of the work, from raising and establishing the stocks to carrying off a champion challenge cup at the Crystal Palace Secondly, to give such descriptions of the best known Roses as should tell of their faults and bad habit* as well as of their good qualities and perfections since I have good reason to believe a record of this sort will be welcomed. Retorted the tutor, lifting his eyebrows in that stage of astonishment which is but one degree removed from disgust; gracious heavens, sir, if your whole success in life, your character, your position, the very bread you eat, is not an object, I should like to know what is! Gerard knew, but he wasn't going to tell Mr. Archer; and I think that in this instance the latter showed less than his usual tact and discrimination in the characters of the young. She learned to speak early and while she did not use baby-talk she had strange words of her own. She called hard money tow and a picture tac, names which had nothing to do with onomatopoeia though it seemed so in some cases. Bread and milk she called plop. She began to read of her own accord when four years old, picking out the letters from the advertisements of the newspapers, and running to her mother at the sink or bread-board to learn what each word meant. Her demand for stories grew to be a burden. She was insatiate, nothing but sleep subdued her eager brain. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Grow Roses Amateurs are now able to have an all-summer Rose feast as well as the most skilled professional, and it is in the amateur's Rose garden, too, that these fragrant blossoms may be gathered with early icicles hanging to them. Nor is a large garden requisite - two or three dozen good plants, of the modern and greatly improved sorts, properly selected, will give much enjoyment, while a garden of Roses can be readily made a sum mer-long delight. In the spring one can have the fun of building air - castles about the plants. When the warm days of June arrive, these air-castles have taken substantial form, and you go from one plant to another, giving each a little daily attention, contrasting one proud beauty with another equally queenly, and, best of all, gathering an abundance of lovely Roses. Half an hour of such tonic toil each day is a great nerve-restorer, and, what is more, it is the best food for the soul. Rose-growing among amateurs in this country is yet in its infancy. In England, nearly everybody grows Roses; there are dazzling vistas of Roses in the hedge-rows along the country roads and lanes; there are gardens full, each person striving in friendly rivalry with his neighbor. Why do our friends on the other side of the sea become so enthusiastic over the Rose? Because it is without a peer among all the flowering plants. It presents nearly every floral shade, in combinations far more attractive than exotic orchids, and, above all it gives to us enjoyment of another sense in its delicious fragrance the crowning feature, in which no other flower can compete with it. For centuries has the Rose been fully recognized as the Queen of Flowers, honored alike by poet and king.
