Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Stories for Children There was once a great storm of rain that covered the earth with a flood; first the fields and valleys were covered, and then the high hills, and last of all the mountains. All the nations who have lived Since have some story of this flood. Even the savage tribes in far-away lands have their stories of how the earth was once covered with water. There is an old Chaldean story about a man who once built a vessel in which he was saved from drowning; and in the vessel with him were many different animals and birds. Another singular story is told of a battle between the sea and the earth. In this fight the sea wins the day, and the earth is covered by the water. There is also a Phrygian story of a man named Enos who foresaw that there was to come a great rain; and it is said that he wept and prayed for his people, because of the terrible flood that was coming upon them. A curious medal has been found that tells about this flood, and upon it is a picture of a square-shaped vessel This is floating upon the water, and has the picture of a man and woman standing within it. There are two birds in the picture; one of them is perched on top of the vessel and the other is flying toward it, with a branch in his mouth. From the Bible we have our story of the Flood, and it is one of the most interesting which we find in the sacred Book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acclaimed storyteller and Jewish scholar Ellen Frankel has masterfully tailored 53 Bible stories that will both delight and educate today’s young readers. Using the 1985 JPS translation (NJPS) of the Hebrew Bible as her foundation, Frankel retains much of the Bible’s original wording and simple narrative style as she incorporates her own exceptional storytelling technique, free of personal interpretation or commentary. Included in the volume is an “Author’s Notebook,” in which Frankel shares with rabbis, parents, and educators the challenges she faced in translating and adapting these stories for children, such as how she deals with adult language in the original Bible text and themes inappropriate for most young readers. With his enticing, full-page color illustrations of each Bible story, award-winning artist Avi Katz ignites readers’ imaginations. His brush captures the vivid personalities and many dramatic moments in this extraordinary collection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Genesis It is a common and lamented fact that most Jewish children in America are not taught to read the Bible with appreciation and pleasure. Conditions in this country are such that very few children ever become proficient enough in Hebrew for an understanding of the Bible in the original, and thus far, very little has been done to teach the Bible text in English. The Bible stories taught in Jewish Sun day Schools and homes cannot take the place of the Bible text. As stories, the Bible narratives have to compete with fairy tales, with Wild West thrillers, with tales of general history and adventure, and with the whole host of attractive stories ofiered to the modern Jewish child; and frequently the Bible narratives lose_in the competition. Only through the text itself can children'get a glimpse into the over powering genuineness, the enduring beauty of style, the primal simplicity of emphasis, the terse vigor, which make the Bible 3 supremely great literature. The American Jew who has not been taught the Bible text in childhood can rarely train himself to read the Bible in later life, because, even in its English translation, he finds the text strange, the diction quaint and unfamiliar, the phrase ology monotonous and the contents confusing. Clearly, if the Bible is to have real meaning to American Jews, it must be taught in childhood as text, if not in the original Hebrew, at least in the American Jewish translation.
