Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Succeed in the Practice of Medicine For the past twenty-five years it has been my pleasure to be connected in a professorial way with several medical colleges in this city. During this time I have frequently talked to the students about "the business side" of the medical profession. They have often asked me to reduce these thoughts to writing; hence this book. I make free use of "the personal pronoun" because I regard this more in the nature of a "heart-to-heart" talk with the "boys" than otherwise. I insert my photograph because they have requested it. The book is enlarged that it may interest all members of the medical profession, and the laity are earnestly requested to read it. Many "fads and frauds" are dealt with without "fear or favor." It has been painful to me to see many of my professional friends die and leave their families in actual want. The reason is plain that it was either their own fault or the fault of their clientele, and how to prevent this happening to others is the main object of the book. I have tried to write "a guide to success" intended principally for medical students and the young practitioners of medicine. Book excerpt: Building on the foundation of the previous edition, this book takes readers to the next level of management of medical practices for the 21st century. The road to becoming a physician is not an easy one to travel, nor does it become easier once a doctor completes his\her training. After a long and arduous training process, doctors embark on their professional journey, and there are major crossroads that are fraught with challenges, unknowns and risk. The transition to professional practice is daunting, and many physicians leave their training unprepared for the business of medicine. Even at the peak of their careers, sustaining a successful and profitable practice is not easy. Opening chapters revisit the basic business concepts that every physician needs to know, emphasizing the benefits that accrue to a physician who understands the basics of business, from accounting and contracts to managing people and personal finances. The next set of chapters offers a roadmap for doctors who are beginning a medical practice and will include new methods and procedures that have become available since the original edition, defining the various options for doctors’ employment such as solo practice, group practice and academic medicine. The final chapters emphasize strategies on how to build and grow a successful practice, including the use of technology and telemedicine, cybersecurity, marketing and much more. Unfortunately, not every doctor has the background, training and skills to manage a medical practice. The Business of Building and Managing a Healthcare Practice simplifies the process of business management and provides the practicing physician with knowledge to be able to enjoy the business component of his\her medical practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inherent to the teaching and practice of emergency medicine are specific challenges not found in other specialties - the unknowns of the emergency department, the need to identify life- and limb-threatening conditions, the pressure to solve problems and find solutions quickly, and the orchestration of clinical specialists and ancillary services. Because of these unique demands, books written by clinicians from other disciplines, that extrapolate their information from other specialties, aren’t always suitable references for teachers of emergency medicine. This book is different – it shows how to incorporate effective teaching strategies into the unique teaching atmosphere of the emergency department, how to effectively lecture, lead small groups, give feedback, foster life-long faculty development skills, and much more – it is written by emergency medicine physicians for emergency medicine physicians. Practical Teaching in Emergency Medicine gets to the essential core of how to best teach the art of practicing emergency medicine – and provides the blueprint to become a better teacher, providing guidance on how to accomplish skilful teaching in busy emergency departments. It provides emergency physicians and trainees with the necessary tools to effectively and efficiently transmit information to learners in the often times chaotic emergency department environment.
