Book excerpt: Five lively firsthand accounts of real life in the exciting pre-Yankee era of Californias rich history are offered in this bookfour of them world premiere publications, and all of them new and complete translations. This was an era not only of political intrigues and sectional clashes but also of upheaval as new ideas and attitudes came to a conservative Californian society. Piracy, kidnapping, lust, Indian uprisings, and scenes of battle all vie for the readers attention with fascinating passages about everyday life in the missions and presidios, governmental offices, and barracks. Governors are ejected, invaders fought, revolts arise, and plots hatched. While largely centered in Southern California, these accounts also bring us north to the Bay area and south to Baja California and farther. The reader of these memoirs will enjoy an intimate experience of life as it really wasa personal view not to be found in standard textbooks. As before with the authors previous foray into California history, Narciso Botellos Annals 18331847, the original manuscripts are rendered into a spirited English translation, capturing the nuances and vigor of these adventures in a land so familiar yet so exotic.

In the second of three volumes, Lyell (1797-1875) continues his uniformitarian argument of Volume I—the physical features of the earth are endlessly fluctuating around a stable mean—but focuses on organic rather than inorganic processes. Volume II is widely known because of its influence on Darwin, who took the book on his famous Beagle voyage and was stimulated by Lyell's extensive treatment of biological history and diversity.

Book excerpt: This volume of the Biographical Dictionary of Chinese Women completes the four-volume project and contains more than 400 biographies of women active in the Tang through Ming dynasties (618-1644). Many of the entries are the result of original research and provide the only substantial information on women available in English. Of note is the inclusion of a large number of women who reached positions of authority during this period as well as women artists and writers, especially poets, during this period of increased female literacy and more liberal social attitudes to women's cultural roles. Wherever possible, entries incorporate translations of poems and sometimes prose works so as to let the women speak for themselves. The book also includes a multitude of entertainers and actresses. The volume includes a Guide to Chinese Words Used, a Chronology of Dynasties and Major Rulers, a Finding List by Background or Fields of Endeavor, and a Glossary of Chinese Names. It will prove to be a useful tool for research and teaching.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, ethnomusicologists across the world have considered how to effect positive change for the communities they work with when faced with challenging social, political, and environmental issues and institutional structures. The two-volume collection Transforming Ethnomusicology aims to deepen and broaden dialogues about social engagement within the discipline of ethnomusicology. Its many voices, from scholars and practitioners from diverse backgrounds and working in a variety of cultural situations, explore how ethnomusicology can transform the world by contributing to social change. Through their illuminating case studies and reflections, they at the same time transform how we understand ethnomusicology as a discipline. The second volume of Transforming Ethnomusicology provides much-needed new examinations of social and ecological concerns and centers around the recognition that colonial and environmental damages are intertwined and grounded in the failure to respect the land and its peoples. Featuring Indigenous perspectives from America, Australia, and South Africa, this volume critically engages with the question how ethnomusicologists can support marginalized communities in sustaining their musical knowledges and threatened geographies within institutional and historically-grown structures that have long worked toward their destruction. The volume ends with a radical model for change that is based on a profound rethinking of established structures of knowledge.

This book was released on 2024-01-23 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Research Topic is the second volume of Research Topic "Binge Drinking in the Adolescent and Young Brain". Please see the first volume here. Binge drinking (BD), also known as heavy episodic drinking or college drinking, is a highly prevalent pattern in most Western countries characterized by the intake of large amounts of alcohol in a short time followed by periods of abstinence. This excessive pattern of alcohol use is a regular practice in around a third of European and American youth. The high prevalence of BD at this age is of particular concern since adolescents are in a period of special vulnerability to neurotoxic effects of alcohol, mainly due to the structural and functional changes going on in the brain throughout this key developmental stage. As showed in the first volume of the Research Topic, evidence gathered during the last decade from animal and human studies seems to point out multiple brain anomalies associated with BD at different levels: biochemical, structural, functional, but also cognitive and affective. In this Second Volume, our aim is to bring together the most recent studies –namely original research and systematic or critical reviews- which provide a comprehensive approach regarding the effects of BD on the adolescent and young brain. Thus, we aim to include manuscripts from different domains (preclinical and clinical research), perspectives (genetic, behavioral, neuropsychological, clinical psychology, psychophysiology, neuroimaging, etc.), and methods (behavioural, biochemical, EEG, MEG, MRI, etc.). Likewise, we welcome submissions aimed at examining the effects of BD beyond the brain (personality dimensions, polygenic risk, peripheral inflammation, cortisol response, gut microbiome, etc.) and approaches focused on reducing BD, such as cognitive training and/or neuromodulation (by tDCS, TMS, etc.).
