Book excerpt: Named one of "22 new books…that you should consider reading before the year is out" by Fortune "This practical and empathetic guide to taking the high road is worth a look for workers lost in conflict." — Publisher's Weekly A research-based, practical guide for how to handle difficult people at work. Work relationships can be hard. The stress of dealing with difficult people dampens our creativity and productivity, degrades our ability to think clearly and make sound decisions, and causes us to disengage. We might lie awake at night worrying, withdraw from work, or react in ways we later regret—rolling our eyes in a meeting, snapping at colleagues, or staying silent when we should speak up. Too often we grin and bear it as if we have no choice. Or throw up our hands because one-size-fits-all solutions haven't worked. But you can only endure so much thoughtless, irrational, or malicious behavior—there's your sanity to consider, and your career. In Getting Along, workplace expert and Harvard Business Review podcast host Amy Gallo identifies eight familiar types of difficult coworkers—the insecure boss, the passive-aggressive peer, the know-it-all, the biased coworker, and others—and provides strategies tailored to dealing constructively with each one. She also shares principles that will help you turn things around, no matter who you're at odds with. Taking the high road isn't easy, but Gallo offers a crucial perspective on how work relationships really matter, as well as the compassion, encouragement, and tools you need to prevail—on your terms. She answers questions such as: Why can't I stop thinking about that nasty email?! What's behind my problem colleague's behavior? How can I fix things if they won't cooperate? I've tried everything—what now? Full of relatable, sometimes cringe-worthy examples, the latest behavioral science research, and practical advice you can use right now, Getting Along is an indispensable guide to navigating your toughest relationships at work—and building interpersonal resilience in the process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It Did What? 37 Secrets about Getting Along With PeopleIn this book, I have detailed my perception of how to get along with almost anyone. Read along the practical thirty-seven secrets in order to get along with anyone and everyone. To get the best out of this book you need to implement the sentences written in bold letters and also carry out the activities detailed in the "Activities to build your muscle" section. Apart from that there is also a Summary section after every chapter and at the conclusion you have a sample plan suitable for one month.IntroductionMost people get along with others. We live in a civilized society where interpersonal relationships are important. There might be the odd bit of friction between a single person and two, but for the most part, most people get along.Remember the Golden Rule: As long as the other person feels significant, you can get along well with almost anyone. No one likes to feel insignificant. Several conflicts occur when the other person feels less important or is given no importance. Avoid those actions that make the person diminish or feel small. We need to do more and more of replacing these actions to build them up. There is a sub-group of people however, that do not seem to get along with almost anyone. These people tend to project blame onto others for their conflict and may also cause others to feel guilty for not meeting expectations in the relationship. Some people are loud or dramatic, others cause rifts in relationships, some may flaunt the law, believing it is their right to do so and others make everything seem resonating, harping and revolving only about them and around them. Mindfulness is the antidote to toxic people. Dealing with someone who rubs you the wrong way can have a negative effect on your own emotions. A toxic person can drive you crazy if you let them. Remember, only you have power over your emotional state. Do not allow a negative or a toxic person to influence your state of mind. That doesn't mean that you ignore the person or disregard how they make you feel. You first need to recognize that your emotions, such as irritation and annoyance, are scaling up. If someone is making you angry, you need to let yourself feel that emotion and then let those feelings dissipate. Sometimes all you need to do is smile and nod. There would be no need to engage in a worthless conversation. There are several behaviours that can break down relationships. Some of which are mentioned below: -Acting annoyed-Being disrespectful with your words or actions-Not paying attention to someone who is speaking to you-Raising your voice-Being unresponsive-Undermining other people-Speaking negatively of others-Unfairly criticizing the other person-Sabotaging someone's reputationChapter One: Secrets on Self1. Accept nobody likes everybody. The first step when dealing with a cantankerous individual is accepting that you are not going to get along with some people, and that's perfectly alright. Not liking them doesn't make you a bad person -- nor does it make the other person fundamentally awful. But, we all have to find a way to get along and work with each other. Acknowledging that you clash with someone, without judging who is right or wrong, can remove the strong emotions that often accompany difficult relationships. For example, there are complex people around us and there are those who for no reason seem to detest our openness to interact with them. We can approach them from our side, but also know that it is not necessary that the other person too accepts our friendship in the same level of openness. It isn't likely that everyone likes you; however, you need to feel at peace that it is quite normal. 2. Believe in the best. If you approach any relationship believing the two of you will strike up a close friendship, chances are good that you will.

Book excerpt: The Dreams to Reality Fieldbook Have you ever wondered why some people accomplish so much more than you do even though they have the same 24 hours? Are you tired of watching everyone else get what they want? Are you ashamed of being jealous of your friends, family or strangers who are living the life you wish you had? What if that could be you? What if you were able to make the income you have always wanted? How about taking a trip around the world without worry? What if you could live life without regrets? Would you be interested in that type of power? You can't change your past but you can have the future you want by changing the actions you take right now. In The Dreams to Reality Fieldbook, Robert Chen shows you how, step by step. This fieldbook was not written to make you feel good. You are not going to find rags-to-riches stories or tips about affirmations and positive thinking. This book was designed to take any dream that you have and turn it into a reality. That's it. Robert's focus when creating this fieldbook was to make it comprehensive, easy-to-understand and as short as possible. This book is not for someone who hopes it will work like magic with little to no effort. Each chapter ends with specific action steps that you should take before moving on. If you do not want to follow the steps, don't waste your time and money because this book will not help you if all you do is read it without stopping to take action. There are only two pre-requisites for this fieldbook: A dream A desire and willingness to commit to pursuing your dream It doesn't matter if you do not know how to achieve your dream, that is why Robert wrote this book. All that matters is that you want to achieve it. You will learn how to: Challenge beliefs and assumptions that hold you back from committing to your dreams Properly set goals that will allow you to turn your dreams into possibilities Create a practical plan that fits into your schedule to achieve your goals Execute your plan to turn possibilities into reality Overcome barriers that will arise when you execute your plan Celebrate and repeat the process again This book contains the information you need to turn your dreams into reality. All you have to do is to follow the steps.

He analyzes recent moves to democratize biomedicine, arguing that although AIDS activists have set the stage for new challenges to scientific authority, all social movements that seek to democratize expertise face unusual difficulties. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A beautifully written and well-researched cultural criticism as well as an honest memoir” (Los Angeles Review of Books) from the author of the popular New York Times essay, “To Fall in Love with Anyone, Do This,” explores the romantic myths we create and explains how they limit our ability to achieve and sustain intimacy. What really makes love last? Does love ever work the way we say it does in movies and books and Facebook posts? Or does obsessing over those love stories hurt our real-life relationships? When her parents divorced after a twenty-eight year marriage and her own ten-year relationship ended, those were the questions that Mandy Len Catron wanted to answer. In a series of candid, vulnerable, and wise essays that takes a closer look at what it means to love someone, be loved, and how we present our love to the world, “Catron melds science and emotion beautifully into a thoughtful and thought-provoking meditation” (Bookpage). She delves back to 1944, when her grandparents met in a coal mining town in Appalachia, to her own dating life as a professor in Vancouver. She uses biologists’ research into dopamine triggers to ask whether the need to love is an innate human drive. She uses literary theory to show why we prefer certain kinds of love stories. She urges us to question the unwritten scripts we follow in relationships and looks into where those scripts come from. And she tells the story of how she decided to test an experiment that she’d read about—where the goal was to create intimacy between strangers using a list of thirty-six questions—and ended up in the surreal situation of having millions of people following her brand-new relationship. “Perfect fodder for the romantic and the cynic in all of us” (Booklist), How to Fall in Love with Anyone flips the script on love. “Clear-eyed and full of heart, it is mandatory reading for anyone coping with—or curious about—the challenges of contemporary courtship” (The Toronto Star).
