One feature, however, should particularly commend it, - the prae tice work employs quotations so familiar that every one will recognize them and all should memorize them., Thus the student acquires, apparently without effort, hundreds of maxims, apt ideas well put; and, better still, he comes under the reflex influence of the many good thoughts well expressed. This feature alone, simply by imparting a certain facility in smoothness of phrase, should render the work invaluable to every interested student of the art of public speaking. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gesture and Pantomimic Action In presenting this book to the public I feel that I am supplying a want long felt by teachers, students, readers, etc. There are many works upon the subject which are almost entirely theoretical; and while theory is certainly indispensable to the study, yet it is the practical work which is required to produce the best and most material results. Of what use is it to a person to be able to expound the theory and philosophy of the work if he cannot exemplify the results in his own body? What he needs is good practical training to relax the stiffened muscles and put grace into awkward limbs. It is for this purpose that I have prepared this book and have endeavored to make it thoroughly practical, and at the same time as simple as possible. The work is arranged in the form of simple practical lessons easily grasped by the novice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of Effective Gesture for Students of Public Speaking It is generally admitted that good gestures help to vitalize, illuminate, and emphasize verbal expression. And if students of the art of speech-making can be led to understand the underlying principles of gesture, and the reasons for its expressiveness, a notable improvement of their style of delivery can be effected. In our instruction and our textbooks dealing with this subject there has been a tendency to inform the student, ex cathedra, that he should use such and such a gesture on this and that passage. In thus performing the function of trainers only, we get more or less mechanical results on the passages in question, but we do not give the insight which enables the student to apply the gestures to similar or analogous ideas wherever expressed. To tell him, for example, that "thousands of acres" may be indicated by a broad sweep of the hand is surely less beneficial than to lead him to understand that the passage of the hand through space conveys to the audience the idea of extent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Gesture: Embracing a Complete System of Notation, Together With the Principles of Interpretation and Selections for Practice Agreeable sounds and harmonious action one addressing the ear, and the other the eye combine to perfect the orator. In the department of vocal culture there is no lack of text-books. Dr. Rush, in his masterly work entitled The Philosophy of the Human Voice, has furnished the most ample facilities for the cultivation of the vocal powers; and for those who find his book too elaborate, Prof. William Russell has published his Orthophony: or. Vocal Culture, in which the subject is rendered simple and practical. These, and other similar works, furnish the requisite means of acquiring the principles and rules of vocal culture. With respect to the department of gesture, however, the case is far different. The want of a complete text-book is seriously felt by the student of oratory. To this want the deficiency of public speakers quite generally, in regard to this subject, is mainly attributable. Among the writers of antiquity, Quintilian, in his Institutes of Oratory, has written the most and the best upon this subject. Rev. Gilbert Austin, an eminent elocutionist of London, issued in A. D. 1806 his Chironomia, a quarto volume of six hundred pages, more than two-thirds of which is devoted to the subject of gesture. This is the most valuable as well as the most extensive, treatise ever written upon this branch of oratory. The present volume is based upon the work of Mr. Austin. The system of notation here adopted is substantially the same as that invented by him, and contained in the Chironomia. In other words, the beating heart and starry spirit of mankind are copartners in the busi ness of making life a great enterprise, regardless of time and place, working to a cosmic purpose, under the direction of something that the Greeks divined and left us to question. The first command to ancient 1tl..ete or to modern soldier is, stand firm! An erect posture is of Vital importance to reader or speaker. The attitude which one naturally assumes unconsciously reflects his character. While the reveller reels, and the miser stoops, and the voluptuary yawns, the true man stands, upright and downright. Let the first exercise in vocal gymnastics, then, be standing. Stand firm, but not rigid straight but do not bend backward, the feet a little apart and at an angle not quite as bi oad as a right angle the wrists against the hip joint; the shoulders square the chest expanded and the head erect.
